Chapter 4
Big Time Tryouts

The hockey rink was cold as it always was; that was the first thing Hortense noticed when he entered the arena with his mother. The second thing he noticed was that a decent amount of students were sitting in the bleachers, no doubt here for tryouts. Hortense was nervous, for he already had trouble in the classroom from Kendall and his friends; he didn't want any more trouble anywhere else. However, the principal mentioned that playing sport or being part of a club could help him gain friends and fix his bullying problem, so Hortense was here with his mother, watching the team do their annual warm-up before practice on the ice.

Other students sat on the bleachers waiting for their turn to show the current school hockey team what they could bring to the team. The twelve-year-old boy watched as each student was called to the ice and showed their skills off. It was interesting to watch, and the players skated a few laps around before shooting some pucks into the net past the goal. By the couch, the team captain stood; both were watching intently and no doubt side talking about who was good and who wasn't. Eventually, tryouts for the day started coming to a close, and the last student was taking their final shots. After doing so, the student sat back on the stands, and the couch was about to call it an end to the day when the team captain spoke; Hortense instantly regretted coming once he heard that captain's voice, it was Kendall, and he was making sure the whole rink could hear him talk.

"Wait, couch - "Kendall begins as he looks around the rink, only for his eyes to no doubt land on Hortense and his mother. Smirking, Kendall says, "- What about that boy? He's been watching us; is he trying out? He should come to give it a shot." Kendall finishes as he switches stances to find a better position to lean on his hockey stick.

Hortense instantly frowns, shrinking next to his mother; he feels nervous. Why did Kendall want him to come to try? Oh right, so he could humiliate him more than likely? The twelve-year-old boy looks to his mother, who doesn't even notice him since she's too busy typing on her phone. Frowning, Hortense tries not to look at the two to bring more attention to himself, and he tries to shrink behind his mother some more, hoping the coach would get his hint.

"He's not on the tryout list, sorry." Hortense hears the coach say to Kendall, making the boy sigh in relief and sit up straight next to his mother. He sighs as the coach says, "Besides, there is no time to try another. We lose this rink practice space in five minutes to the figure skaters. So, we will wrap up here and thank all who tried out today, and the results will be posted by the end of the week when all tryouts are done. Have a good night, everyone." The coach finishes with a smile.

Just like that, the hockey team and the students all get up to leave. Hortense finally sees his mother put her phone down, and together the two start walking out of the arena. They get into their car, and Mrs. Mitchell starts driving home. There is silence for the first half of the car ride, but about halfway home, his mother looks at him through her re-view mirror and smiles.

"So, what did you think? Wanna join hockey?" Mrs. Mitchell questions as she raises an eyebrow at her son; she makes sure her eyes are on the road. Sure, she thought hockey was dangerous herself, but she would never take the opportunity away from her son at the chance of making friends. Hortense was twelve now, and he needed to start making friends; the poor boy was always home alone in his room studying. Sure, she wanted her boy safe, but she wanted him to get out and explore the town and know that there is more out there than just school. "Hortense…." She states once she doesn't hear an answer, "...I asked you a question." Mrs. Mitchell finishes as she sighs.

Hortense frowns and sighs. "I guess it looks all right, but I d-don't think I want to try out…." The boy states as he bites his bottom lip.

"What? Why not?" Mrs. Mitchell demands as she pulls the car into their driveway.

Why not? Because Kendall is the team captain, he would undoubtedly do whatever he could to humiliate Hortense or make it miserable for him. But, if he told his mother about Kendall, she would know who's been bullying him. She didn't need her to lose Mrs. Knight as a friend, and the two hung out on occasion, so he was torn on how to answer. But apparently, his silence leaves his mother to decide for him, and he silently thanks the lord for it.

"I guess you're going to try out; what's the harm? If you make it awesome, if not, well, at least we tried, and we'll look around town for a club for you to join." Mrs. Mitchell finishes as they get out of the car and walk to the front door together. "Now, it's late; why don't you get ready for bed?" Mrs. Mitchell smiles at her son as he nods; the two share a hug before going inside for the night.

The next day Hortense was trying out for the hockey team after school. The boy was nervous and worried about how it would all go down. He didn't care if Kendall bullied him; he learned to ignore the boy; he was more worried about Kendall bullying him in front of his mother, which made him worried. The nervous part was because his mother was coming to watch how things went. Hortense was also nervous because he never really told anyone about his ice skating past. In Texas, it was hot most of the time, so to cool off, his father would take him to the town's ice rink to skate around and enjoy the cool temperatures of the building. He had been part of a team there. He did gymnastics and ice skating. Hortense, by no means, was not a figure skater; the team he was a part of did speed skating. Thus, his background in it. However, it's been a while since Hortense skated; after what happened with his father, he swore off skating altogether, at least until now. But at the time, he didn't have a choice. His mother wanted him to try out, and Hortense wanted to make her happy and proud. So, of course, he was going to do it. The twelve-year-old boy just hoped he didn't make a fool of himself in front of everyone.

At first, the boy had been nervous when it was his turn to go. He shook in his skates as he entered, all eyes on him, and then he found Kendall's face in the crowd of the arena. Hortense knew letting your bully get to you wasn't a good thing, so he planned to ignore Kendall and his group of friends and do his best. Tapping into his old skating times, Hortense took a deep breath and began turning. It was easy to show the coach that he could indeed skate, better than most who have tried out today (at least Hortense thought), but were he good enough to make the team? The boy did three laps, then got his hockey stick from the coach and shot his puck three different times right past the goalie. Hortense cheered as he made his third shot. The coach blew his whistle as he was cheering and called the boy over to him and Kendall.

"Are you sure you never played before, kid? Pretty good cause." The coach applauds as he smiles at the boy.

Hortense smiles. "Never coach, and thank you." He finishes as he grins, side glancing at Kendall, and has a silent victory as he can tell Kendall is looking at him in surprise.

The coach nods, "All right, finals aren't up yet, but I can already tell you're going to be on the team. Congratulations." Coach finishes with a broad smile that is ear to ear.

With one last look at Kendall, the twelve-year-old boy is dismissed and back on the bleachers sitting next to his mother. Soon, the tryouts are over, and the two head out to their car. As other students passed them, Hortense took one look back at the building to see Kendall still there sitting outside on the bench, more than likely waiting for a ride. Seeing as the parking lot is pretty empty and that it's almost ten at night, Hortense assumes that no one is coming for the blonde-haired bully by now and most likely is not. The twelve-year-old boy looks back and forth between Kendall and his mother, who calls for him to get into the car. It's dark and cold, and it's starting to snow, and poor Kendall is waiting alone in this mess.

Hortense sighs; even though he isn't thrilled about how Kendall and his friends treat him, he doesn't think it would be right if he left the boy there without offering a ride. After all, they were neighbors, and maybe, just maybe, this one chance could help bond the two boys, and the car ride wouldn't be too bad. So, after making his mind up, Hortense points out Kendall to his mom, and after some explanation, he manages to get her to agree to take Kendall home. They get into the van and arrive at where the boy is sitting and parked. Kendall looked up as the car pulled up in front of him.

"Hey Kendall, want a ride home?" Hortense asks with a small smile.

Glancing at his watch, Kendall slightly rolls his eyes, seeing who asked. However, it was late, cold, and snowy. Kendall didn't have a choice, and he also didn't feel like walking home. Nodding, Kendall comes up to the car as he gets into the back seat and smiles at Mrs. Mitchell and Hortense. The blonde-haired boy is even surprised that Hortense offered to consider all the mean things Kendall has done to him. Maybe, the boy wasn't as bad as he thought? Kendall thanks Mrs. Mitchell and Hortense for the ride home. He usually wouldn't take rides, but since the boy somewhat knew these people, he deemed it okay, plus the two lived right next door to him, so why would he pass this up. His mother most likely forgot, which happened occasionally, so Kendall was silently thankful to Hortense and his mother. The car ride home was a little awkward and silent, but otherwise, it went fine. When they pulled up to Kendall's driveway, he thanked them once more and got out. But, before he closed the door, he turned and looked at Hortense and smiled.

"Congratulations on today. I'll see you at hockey practices. It'll be fun. Kendall compliments.

"Oh um, thank you, Kendall. You're excellent as well. I'll see you at school Monday?" Hortense questions with a smile at the boy, surprised by his compliment.

"Yeah, see you, Monday Hortense."

With that, Kendall leaves and gets into his house. After making sure Kendall got into his house safely, his mother pulls into their driveway. Once they are home, they park in the garage and get inside. Since it's late, the two have leftovers for dinner, and Hortense does his regular night routine. Once he is ready, he is asleep in bed with a smile on his face. Perhaps….that maybe something good came out of today, and Hortense hoped to become friends with Kendall. But little did he know; things were going to change big time for him…
