Chapter 5

Big Time New Friends

When the hockey team finalist was posted, Hortense made the team. He hadn't surprised the boy so much, considering what the coach had told him at the tryouts. But what had surprised him was how differently Kendall had been treating the boy since he offered him a ride home the other night. Hortense wasn't sure if it was because Kendall had been thankful for not being left in the cold or because they were now on the same hockey team. Whatever the reason was, things had been a lot better at school for the twelve-year-old ever since he made the team. Hortense wasn't complaining one bit, but he still made sure to be cautious around Kendall and his friends in case the blonde-haired boy decided to turn the table on him again.

Hortense found hockey to be more complex than the actual tryouts. Hortense spent more time at the ice rink and found himself tired when he got home. It was endless skating drills, team position layout practices, and one-one hockey plays. During this time, Hortense was getting to know Kendall more, and the two worked one on one sometimes; the coach saw how "the two had somewhat team chemistry" between the two, as the coach claimed, and Hortense found that Kendall wasn't too bad of a person. The boy knew his stuff about hockey; Hortense would give him that, but beyond that, Kendall wasn't wild about school. However, that didn't stop Kendall from asking Hortense to help tutor him in some classes when his coach came onto the boy about his grade slipping at practice one day. Hortense agreed because the coach was right there when Kendall asked. So now the two were spending even more time together than Hortense nor Kendall probably would've liked. But this made his mother happy, for she seemed to believe that the two were now best friends when in reality, they were still only acquaintances and put up with one another for the sake of their families and the hockey team.

It was near the end of January by this time, and Hortense thought he would survive his new school just fine. The only reason he thought this was because not only had Kendall and his friends been leaving him alone but so had other students, which made it easier for Hortense to get through his school days. Sitting at the kitchen table of his house, Hortense watched as Kendall sat across from working on some math problems. They were currently meeting for one of their annual tutoring sessions, and Kendall requested more study time because he has a math test coming up, and if he didn't pass with at least a B+, he would be benched for the season until his grades got up. Kendall didn't want that at all, and Hortense knew the boy was determined to get his grades up so that he could stay on the hockey team.

"There, finished. Can you check it over, please?" Kendall questions as he raises an eyebrow at Hortense, who nods and takes the paper from the boy sliding it over.

As Hortense checks the paper, he smiles at Kendall. He says, "Congratulations, you got them all right. See, I told you that you could do it. You have to give yourself more credit.

Kendall takes it and smiles. "Thanks. I appreciate your help as always." Kendall states as he nods in thought. "But can I ask you something?"

Hortense looked up and raised an eyebrow at the eleven-year-old before him. Hortense smiles and nods. "Your welcome, and sure, what is it?"

Sighing, Kendall says, "Well, this Sunday is my little sister's birthday. Her name is Katie, and she's turning seven, and she asked our mom if you could come to her party. So my mom told me to ask you the next time we were studying together. What do you think? Would you like to come to my little sister's birthday party?" Kendall questions as he eyes Hortense.

The boy thinks over the pros and cons of going. It could be fun to hang out and get to know others. It could still be a trap from Kendall. Hortense was still keeping his guard up around the boy, after all. Yet, when he looked the blonde-haired boy over to try and read his body language for any signs of such a thing, he couldn't find any. Could it possibly be that Kendall started accepting Hortense and maybe being friends? After some thought, Hortense smiles and nods. Seeing him agree, Kendall smiles and sighs in relief, which surprised Hortense. The two then chatted and finished their school work before Kendall had to leave.

"Thanks again, Hortense; I'll see you Sunday! Have a good weekend. The party starts at noon; your mother is also invited if she can make it. I'll introduce you to some people I know. See you later." Kendall states as he and Hortense wave goodbye.

Watching Kendall get to his house next door. Hortense closes his front door and smiles to himself. It was indeed Friday, and they could hang out this weekend. Maybe Hortense can help Kendall study Sunday after his math test on Monday? Either way, things were starting to look up for the young genius, and Hortense believed that maybe Minnesota wasn't as bad as he thought when he first arrived. Maybe, just maybe, Hortense was starting to adjust to his new life finally…

….

After telling Mrs. Mitchell about the birthday party Kendall invited them to, his mother agreed to go. After getting a few presents for Katie and wrapping them, the two-headed over to the Knight's house and arrived precisely at noon. Knocking on the door, Mrs. Knight was the one to greet them and let them inside. Placing their presents on the table with the others for Katie, Mrs. Knight told Hortense that Kendall was with his sister and other friends in the living room. So, he set off that easy while Mrs. Knight and Mrs. Mitchell went into the kitchen to talk and work on getting the food ready to eat. Upon entering the living room, Hortense saw it was a nice cozy space with the couches being angled in a corner and the tv in front of them on a small coffee table. A fireplace was on the far left of the room, and bookshelves were behind the couches. Kendall and his two friends were on the couch while Katie was coloring at the coffee table.

"Hey, Hortense, you made it! Come join us!" Kendall states as he waves the boy over to them.

"Aw, dude, you invited the dork? Why?"

Hortense stops in his tracks, unsure of whether to proceed. The boy recognized the two with Kendall, and they always hung around him in the classroom. It was the pretty boy who spoke, the one who combed his hair and looked into a mirror. The boy never liked Hortense, no matter how they crossed paths in school and hockey practice. Hortense noticed that he was almost as tall as Kendall and that he had perfect brown shoulder-length hair, and his skin was flawless for a boy. Hortense also noticed how much more fashionable he was than the other kids in their school. Sure, Hortense has seen this boy around Kendall, but the boy wondered why they were friends; the two were utterly opposite. He smirked to himself when Kendall punched him in the shoulder, making the pretty boy whine in protest.

Kendall warns the boy. "Dude, not cool," he says. "You'll have to excuse him, and sometimes he says things without thinking," Kendall explains. "Hortense, this is James, James, this is Hortense," Kendall says.

"Yeah, yeah, I know him from school and hockey," James states as he rolls his eyes some; he pulls his mirror out and starts combing his hair once more, making Kendall shakes his head in annoyance.

"What kind of name is Hortense?" A second voice speaks up, making everyone look at him. It's a boy wearing a helmet who's sitting on Kendall's left side.

"Look who's talking, Carlos….your name is no different from his. But at least he doesn't wear a helmet constantly as you do." James inputs, emphasizing the kid's name as he throws a slight insult at his friend, only picking on him in a friendly way.

Before anyone knew what was happening, Carlos got up and tackled James for making fun of the helmet. Hortense watches as the boys start to wrestle, and Katie chants for them to fight. Hortense is surprised, and he glances at Kendall, who shrugs and gives off a nervous laugh. It wasn't the first impression he wanted his group to make with Hortense. Yet, Hortense didn't expect anything else from the Carlos boy. He had also seen him around school, constantly bouncing off walls and being one of the clumsiest kids ever. It was no wonder the boy always wore the helmet, and he was a danger prone to himself. Carlos was of Latino heritage, which meant his skin was a little more tanned than the others. But, this still didn't stop them from accepting Carlos for who he was, a loud, energetic child at heart for sure. The boy was about Hortense's height, the two being the shorter members of the four. He had dark hair and wore just the basic style of lounging clothes. Seeing Carlos at school and during hockey didn't surprise Hortense that Carlos was on the hockey team in the first place. After Kendall got the two to stop fighting before they broke something of his mother's and got in trouble again, Kendall then introduced him to Carlos and explained that James and Carlos always go at it; it was typical for the two. The four got to know one another, and Hortense also got to know Katie and wished her a happy birthday. He was shocked when Katie thanked him with a hug.

After hanging out for some time, Hortense learned that his three possible new friends liked watching the Pussycat dolls on tv, claiming their music was good and the girls were hot. And that the three also just messed around and talked about everything they could talk about. Hortense had learned that James wanted to be a famous singer, Carlos wanted to help save the world, and Kendall wanted to be a professional hockey player. When asked about what he wanted to do when he was older, Hortense told them he wanted to be a doctor and help save lives. The four enjoyed their time together, and Katie even seemed to be having a fantastic birthday even though she didn't have friends her age there to celebrate. Hortense wondered about that but figured it was best not to bring it up. Soon they ate lunch and then did cake and ice cream, and Katie opened presents. After things settled down, it was time for the guest to leave. James' mother picked him up after work that day while Carlos rode a bike home. Hortense and his mother stayed after to help clean up, and Mrs. Knight thanked them for it. As they were going to leave, the knights waved goodbye.

"Thanks for coming; it was fun!" Katie states as she once more hugs Hortense as her goodbye and even hugs his mother.

"Your welcome, sweetie; happy birthday again! Thank you for having us!" Mrs. Mitchell states as she is let go from Katie's hug with Katie being dragged back by Mrs. Knight.

"I'll see you at school tomorrow Hortense?" Kendall questions as he smiles at the boy.

Hortense nods. "Yes, you will. Good luck on your test tomorrow." Hortense states as he smiles as well.

"Thanks, and sounds good. See you tomorrow also after school. The guys and I come here and hang out since we don't have practice tomorrow. Maybe you could join us again?" Kendall questions as he smiles at the young genius with hope, then he looks at his mother. "Is that okay, mom?" Kendall questions as he looks at her with pleading eyes,

Mrs. Knight smiles. "Of course, they are always welcomed here. As long as Hortense wants to and his mother is all right with it," Mrs. Knight finishes as she sides hug Kendall and Katie with each arm. All three of them smile at the two Mitchells.

"What do you say, mom? Can I hang out with Kendall and the guys here after school tomorrow?" Hortense questions hope as he also looks at his mother with pleading eyes.

For a moment, there is silence, but then Mrs. Mitchell smiles. "As long as you promise me you'll still get your homework done when you get home, then yes, you can hang out here tomorrow." Mrs. Mitchell finishes as she is suddenly pulled into a hug by her son.

Once they pull away, they all say goodbye to one another once more and head home. Getting home, Hortense smiles as he starts helping his mother with their evening chores. It was finally happening, and Hortense couldn't contain his excitement. Kendall was warming up to him and accepting him into his group of friends! Hortense's mind was still wrapping around the fact that he was possibly even going to have friends for the first time in his life. The twelve-year-old boy still had to be careful, though; he wouldn't forget all the times Kendall, James and Carlos had bullied him, but if this worked out, he was willing to forgive and start over. After their chores, Hortense and his mother ate dinner and then got ready for bed. Hortense looked outside his bedroom window and still couldn't believe how things looked up for him in bed. That night, for the first time in a while, the young genius fell asleep with a smile on his face; he was starting to finally make friends…
