So this covers some of their backstory a little, on some scenes we see in the show. This is only part one, another part with more will be the next chapter.
After chapter eight, some things will pick up with Kendall and his mother, as well as Hortense and his OCD as well, so bare with me! Things are on track so they are all the right age by Big Time Auditions! I saw a review asking about a doctor appointment for Hortense (Logan) that will all be answered I promise! Chapter 7
Big Time Extracurriculars Part 1
Summer had come and gone, and Hortense was starting to get used to the odd weather in Minnesota. The young genius had spent most of the summer hanging out at the Knight household with Kendall, James, and Carlos or going to the park. When summer was coming to a close and school was starting, it was already starting to get cold again. Hortense and Mrs. Mitchell went school shopping for new supplies and clothes. At first, Hortense tried to protest about the clothes shopping, but when he and his couldn't get one of his old favorite sweater vests over his head, his mother decided it was time. Shopping hadn't been one of Hortense's favorite pastimes, but it had to be done, so they got it over with.
This year, he and Kendall would be meeting at Kendall's driveway and riding the bus together with Carlos and James, which he had done on his first day of seventh grade. After school, they got their new schedules and found their new classes. In seventh grade, they had a homeroom for the first period, which they were in together, then they changed classrooms for their others. Hortense was thrilled to see that he had a few advanced classes on his schedule, his friends didn't have them, sadly, but he was going to enjoy the learning either way. James took hold of his schedule and eyed it with interest, and the four were comparing theirs to see which ones they had together. James frowns when Hortense realizes he sees the extra classes.
"Wow, Hortense, you sure you can handle all these classes?" James questions with an eyebrow raise as the brunette boy hands Hortense his schedule back.
Hortense snatches it from James's hand and says, "Yes, James, I can."
Seeing that Hortense was a little snappy with his answer, James drops the teasing. After their homeroom class, Hortense, James, and Carlos find themselves in the cafeteria eating their lunch. The three of them found themselves in the corner of the room, and it was the perfect place where no one would bother them. About halfway into eating his sandwich, Hortense looked around the table and finally noticed their fourth member was missing; it made him worry.
"Where's Kendall? He should be here by now." Hortense questions as he sets his sandwich down and looks at the other two with the hope they will answer him.
But it appears the two didn't know for the shrugged. "Don't know. Saw the boy last in class; Kendall said he had to go to his locker." Carlos states as he bites into his food, which was, oddly enough, two corndogs and his sandwich.
Hortense is about to speak up when Kendall comes up behind him. "Hey, guys - "Kendall's voice made Hortense almost fall off his chair as the three turned to see the blonde-haired boy sitting next to them. "- Sorry I'm late, I got lost, and I'm starving. Also, James, I saw the notice board in front of the principal's office; there's a school choir holding auditions this Friday."
"You want me to be a boring choir? Kendall, if I'm going to sing, it will be when I'm famous." James states with a grin making Hortense and Carlos roll their eyes slightly.
Kendall shrugs, "I'm just saying, it could do you good. Plus, I just learned that we all need to join an extra circular if we want to pass seventh grade."
"Where did you hear that?" Carlos questions as he raises an eyebrow at Kendall while taking a drink from his water bottle.
"The principle," Kendall states as he takes a bite of his sandwich; he swallows before continuing. "She saw me looking at it; I asked about the stuff on the board. I also learned I was lost, and they gave me directions to find this cafeteria. James, you love to sing. I think you should do it." Kendall finishes as he continues to eat.
James bites his lip and puts his sandwich down, now being nervous. "I don't know - "
"Kendall's not wrong, plus you could add choir on your applications. The work field and colleges always look at students who have done above and beyond. Extracurriculars always stand out on a resume when looking to hire someone. As he says, you love to sign James, might as well do something you like to do, right?" Hortense questions as he raises an eyebrow at them.
"I don't even want to know how you know about all that." James shakes his head as he sighs, but he smiles, appreciating his friends' support for his dreams. He thinks and says, "All right, I'll audition, but only if you guys come with me." James finishes as he looks at them with hope.
Hortense, Kendall, and Carlos smile, "Of course!"
Just like that, the conversation is dropped, and the four finish their food. After finishing, the four go about the rest of the school day and soon find a home. Hortense smiles, his mother works late that night, and he is left to figure out dinner for himself, which he has leftovers. After doing his homework and taking a shower, the young genius reads before falling asleep with a smile. He is so tired that he doesn't hear his mother come in and check on him when she's home as he is sleeping. Seeing her son asleep, Mrs. Mitchell smiles as she pulls the book off him and a blanket over him. She kisses his forehead and then turns off his bedroom light and closes the door quietly so he can sleep peacefully.
…
It isn't until Hortense, James, Carlos, and Kendall find themselves at the choir auditions at the end of the week that James starts having doubts about his signing talent. The boy is almost about to walk out when the teacher calls his name; Kendall gives him a speech, and he goes inside, and the other three wait to see how it goes. Once James comes out with the teacher, he has the biggest grin; Kendall is about to speak when the teacher beats him to it, seeing the three of them waiting there.
"Oh hello, are you three auditioning as well? We still have room for more."
The three shake their heads, and Kendall says, "Sorry, we're just here to support our friend."
The teacher smiles and says, "Well, you can also support your friend by trying out. If you make it, the four of you could be in choir together."
Before any of them protest, James gives them the puppy dog face. Caving in, the three take turns auditioning with the teacher, and after the third finishes, she calls all four of them back inside the room. She was impressed by all four of them and handed them a sheet asking for a parent's signature to join and told them that their first practice was this Monday after school. At first, all four boys are shocked; Hortense, Carlos, and Kendall never considered themselves signers or even thought they could. Once the teacher let them go, all four went to the front to wait for their rides since the school buses had left already.
"So, what do you guys think? Going to join me in the choir?" James questions as he raises an eyebrow at the three, and a glimmer of hope shine in his eyes.
There is silence, but Kendall smiles and says, "Sure, I'll join you; what about you two?" Kendall questions as he nods to Hortense and Carlos.
The two smile and they say, "Count us in."
James has the biggest smile on his face and silently thanks his friends for talking him into this. He felt somewhat guilty that they were forced to try out by the teacher, so it was only fair to return the favor to his friend. He would've never tried out if Kendall hadn't brought it up. Before James smiled and tapped Kendall on the shoulder, the four sat in silence.
"Yes?" Kendall questions as he raises an eyebrow looking up at James.
"I thought that since you guys helped me, I want to help you. Plus, maybe the four of us could all do more extracurriculars together, giving us more reason to spend more time together." James states with a grin as he shoves his hands in his coat pocket since they were cold.
"What did you have in mind?" Kendall questions as he smiles at his friend.
James shrugs and says, "Not sure yet. Maybe we can keep an eye on that notice board and see if anything catches our eyes? What do you guys think?" James wonders as he sighs.
The other three nod, liking the idea. As the four friends sat and waited, they talked about possible options. When their ride finally showed up (Mrs. Knight), they all climbed into the car, and Kendall told his mother about choir the whole way home. After getting dropped off, James and Carlos went into their perspective homes. Once Hortense made it to the Knight's house, he got out of the car, thanked them for the ride as always, and made it inside his house. Inside the house, the young boy was happy to see that his mother was home and when asked about how school was, Hortense told her all about the choir auditions and how he was joining. Surprisingly Mrs. Mitchell let him and even signed his paper for him. Mrs. Mitchell and Hortense hung out in the living room and relaxed that night. The young genius smiled as he worked on his homework, was excited to be in choir with his friends, and wondered what other excellent activities they could do together. Little did Hortense Mitchell know what was ahead of him for his future…
A/N - Well there was chapter seven, what did you think? Good? Bad? Should I continue? Anyway I'm hoping to have chapter eight up by next week. So keep an eye out.
