Chapter 11
Big Time Troubles
Getting people to call him Logan instead of Hortense for the longest time was hard. When he came home that evening from snowboarding with the guys, he told his mother about Mrs. Diamond's demands and that he liked the name Logan and wanted to go by it. His mother was livid at the new information, and "Logan" could've sworn she would lose it right then and there.
"I'm going to have a long conversation with that woman, I swear! She got into your head. Your name is Hortense, not Logan." Mrs. Mitchell explained as she eyed him thoughtfully while crossing her arms.
That night, the two got into a minor argument, resulting in his mother sending him to bed, not wanting to deal with it. So, that night "Logan" got onto his laptop, not quite ready to fall asleep, and began researching the information that he remembered was on the doctor's note his mother had taken away from him a while back. Searching in words: Autism Spectrum Disorder
"Logan" was at first surprised by the information he found online. One article read: Autism spectrum disorder is a condition related to brain development that impacts how a person perceives and socializes with others, causing problems in social interaction and communication. The disorder also includes limited and repetitive patterns of behavior. The term "spectrum" in autism spectrum disorder refers to the wide range of symptoms and severity. (1)
After reading the entry, he clicked on it and read the whole article. That night he stayed up until almost eleven pm reading, watching videos, and learning of this so-called condition that the doctors claimed he had to his mother. Finally, having read enough, "Logan" frowns and closes his laptop; he goes downstairs to find his mother in her work office at her computer. She must've heard him come up, for she spoke, making him jump.
"Oh, hello, Hortense; I thought you were in bed?" Mrs. Mitchell questions as she looks up from her work and to her son.
The young genius looks back and forth, feeling nervous about his decision to come down. But if not now, when? "Logan" sighs and shakes his head. "Couldn't sleep, and it's Logan now, mom," Logan explained as he sent her a weak smile. Big mistake
Mrs. Mitchell stood quicker than "Logan" had ever seen his mother move in her life. She scolded him and frowned. "You are my son, not her's! Your name is Hortense, not Logan! Got it!?" Mrs. Mitchell declared that she had both hands on her desk, "Logan" nodded, sighed, and sat back in her chair. "Good, but I'm guessing that's not why you came down; what is it?"
"Logan" sighs and takes a deep breath before shaking with a shaky breath. "I have Autism Spectrum Disorder, don't I?" The question shocked her; Mrs. Mitchell nearly fell out of her seat and knocked over her pencil holder. She ignored the contents all over her desk and turned to her son. He continued, "I looked it up, from the words on that doctor note to you. That's why you've been acting odd around me. That's why Mrs. Knight suggested you get me to help the one time at Carlo's party. I'm not dumb, mom…I know what words mean, and I know how having a child with this disorder is hard, and that's why you've been distant from me, and you refuse to let me go by Logan - "
He was rambling now; he knew he was, for his mother got up from her chair, came over to him, and kneeled to his height. She pulls him into a hug. She sighs and says, "Yes, you are correct about all of that. You have Autism Spectrum Disorder - "Mrs. Mitchell pulls away from the hug and eyes, "Logan" seriously. "- But I didn't tell you because I didn't want anything to change about you. I love you, Hortense, and I hope you know that. I love you." Mrs. Mitchell smiles, and she says seriously. "I explained why I won't let you go by Logan. I meant it when I said your my child and not hers, and Hortense is your name."
Frowning, he says, "Why would having this disorder change me? And why can't you see that I like the name, Logan?"
"Because sometimes people can be mean when someone has an illness or a mental disorder. I didn't want that to affect you or anyone to treat you differently. You finally have friends, and I don't want that taken away from you." She then sighs. "But I should've known you'd figure it out sooner or later. You're my smart boy. Very smart, and I'm proud of you for who you are."
That statement caused "Logan" to smile and feel over the mom. The rest of the night, the two talked about the condition, and Mrs. Mitchell gave him the piece of paper this time to look it over. They talked about treatment options the doctor gave them, and soon "Logan" fell asleep on the couch. His mother carried him to the bed that night and tucked him in. She kissed his forehead and left his room, shutting the door quietly. Sighing, Mrs. Mitchell shakes her head, can't believe that her son figured things out. It was out now, and there was no doubt things would change. But would it be for the worst or better? Mrs. Mitchell could only worry about her son's future that night…
…
It's been a few days since "Logan" confronted his mother about his medical findings. At first, he thought things would be better between the two, but it only seemed to worsen. His mother was gone, claiming to be picking up extra work hours. It didn't bother him for a while, but the more she was gone, the more worried "Logan" got. So, the young genius spent most of his next few days hanging with Kendall, James, and Carlos at Kendall's house or the parking lot of Kendall's job. Then he would come home and clean the house and get himself dinner. It was late into the night when his mother would come home, strut past his room and go to bed. "Logan" sighed and went to bed that night, worried for his mother.
The following day the young genius found that his mother wasn't yet up. It was Sunday which meant she had today off, and the boy was hoping the two of them could spend time together for once. At first, he hung out alone, but when it was close to noon, "Logan" started wondering about his mom, and something started to feel very wrong. Getting up from the living room couch where he was watching cartoons, "Logan" went up to his mother's room, taking the steps two at a time. Approaching the door, "Logan" knocked on it quietly and peered in. "Mom?" but when he got no response, he pushed the door open and headed in.
He figured his mother would be in bed at first but frowned when he saw that she wasn't there. Looking at everyone, "Logan" saw she wasn't in her closet or the bathroom. He almost gave up when he checked the other side of the bed and was shocked and confused at what he found. His eyes widened and started to fill with tears. On the floor was his mother, who wasn't moving at all. He rushed over and shook her to wake her but no response. She wasn't waking. He felt for a pulse, it was fragile, and he started to panic. He grabbed their house phone, dialed the first number he thought of, and waited for an answer.
"Hello Knight household, Mrs. Knight speaking…."
"M-Mrs. Knight…its… it's my mother. She's not… she's not answering me or moving…."
Realizing who was on the phone, Mrs. Knight told "Logan" to stay with his mother, and she would be right over along with an ambulance and the police. That statement alone confused "Logan," but the young genius knew this was a severe situation. Mrs. Knight stayed on the phone with him until she got to the house and he found her. She held him in her arms to comfort him as the paramedics rushed along with the police to take his mother away to the hospital. Mrs. Knight had "Logan" wait outside the doorstep as the women talked to the police. From what the police had mentioned to Mrs. Knight and the words "Logan" were able to overhear somewhat, his mother had a "suicide attempt," and if the young boy hadn't found her when he did, she might've not been alive. "Logan" felt weak hearing that, and his heart fluttered as he sat on the steps and allowed himself to cry for not only himself but his mother's health and situation…
That night "Logan" found himself staying with the Knight family and sharing a room with Kendall. Things were quiet in the household, and "Logan" mainly had kept to himself, worrying too much about his mother. So that night, "Logan" had a restless sleep, and all he could do was hope and pray that his mother would be all right…
