Lexie's POV: Being happy seemed nearly impossible when you are stuck in a room with your rival house, your archenemy and a teacher who decided for whatever reason that insulting you was a worthy example to get you detention.
I growled in frustration. The other students had spread around the room, some standing in pairs, some training for themselves. No one even seemed close to producing anything with their wands yet, let alone a full-formed Patronus. I was standing next to Marcus, still trying to focus on a happy memory as a murmur went through the room. I looked up to find some silver lines appearing at the end of Veronica's wand.
"Great work, Miss Shelley! 5 more points to Gryffindor", said Lupin happily surprised.
"That's it", I thought to myself.
I turned to the other side of the room, trying to get as much space between me and Shelley and Lupin. On one of the tables moved to the walls I sat down facing away from the rest of the class. I took a deep breath and tried to relax every muscle in my body. The chatting of other students slowly faded. Another deep breath. I closed my eyes. Scenes from my childhood appeared before my inner eye. I was surrounded by my family. Laughter filled the air as I ran around the garden behind the house playing catch with my loved ones. My father caught me and swung me up in the air while I was bubbling with joy. A smile appeared on my face. The stress of the last days took off my shoulders and energy filled every cell in my body. I did not notice the class staring at me, I did not hear Wood's remarks or Shelley giggling. All my attention laid on my happiest memories.
Slowly I got up and turned around. One last time, I recalled everything my father taught me two years ago when we practised the Patronus in the same garden I spent so many of my happiest hours in.
"Miss Hatchet, when you're done pouting would you be so kind to demonstrate your progress to the class?" Lupin smiled confidently.
"I would love to, sir", I said returning his smile. "Expecto Patronum!"
Lupin's face went pale as a massive creature burst out of my wand.
My Patronus made a leap over a desk, filling the room with silvery lights. I let him run one round around the classroom before calling him to my side. There he stood, just like I had trained over and over again. A sight of grace and pride, determination and ferocity. Proudly I let my gaze wander over the other students, whispering and staring at the silver animal by my side. Finally, I looked at Professor Lupin, whose face was still as white as chalk.
"Your Patronus is a husky?", Marcus asked appreciatively.
I smiled. "Better. It's a wolf."
Nicki's POV: A wolf? Hatchet had made a perfect Patronus and it wasn't some weird-ass animal or something ugly, no it had to be a wolf. Of course. Like the rest of the class, I couldn't really do anything else than gape at her. At least, shortly. I collected my chin from the floor, then looked over to where Professor Lupin was standing, just staring at the wolf. He was white as snow and had a weird look on his face, something like confusion mixed with... fright? What was that about? He seemed to feel my gaze on him because he looked up and met my eyes shortly, then he shrugged off whatever it was that had bothered him.
I raised an eyebrow. "Mh", I made to myself and made a mental note not to forget about that. Lupin turned to Hatchet and cleared his throat.
"Well... mh, well done", he said and nodded.
Hatchet was notably proud of and pleased with herself. She practically glowed.
"Thank you, professor", she said and then added: "I know."
Now it was Lupin who raised a brow.
"You know, don't you? Well, in that case, I don't need to award you the house points you would have gotten or what do you think?"
Hatchet crossed her arms in front of her chest and just stared at Lupin with a challenging look on her face.
"Anyways, 10 points to Slytherin", he finally said and wanted to continue with the lesson but Marcus Flint interrupted: "10 points? I'm sorry, Professor, but Shelley got 5 points for some silver mist or something and Lexie only gets 5 points more even though she managed a full Patronus?"
"Careful, Mr Flint", Lupin said and regarded him with dark eyes. "Speak in that tone again and Slytherin will lose more points than it has just won."
I couldn't help the snort that escaped my mouth and quickly tried to cover it up with a cough. Both Flint and Hatchet turned to me and shot me angry looks. I jauntily waved at them, but Oliver grabbed my arm and pulled it down.
"Don't make it worse than it already is, Nicki", he hissed.
I shrugged but did stop. We trained for another few minutes until the lesson was over and Lupin let us all go.
"Oh, and Miss Hatchet?", Lupin called her back when she was almost through the door. "Your detention starts this evening. Come to my office after dinner."
She hesitated, then merely gave a quick nod and walked out the door.
"You know", I said to Oliver while we walked to our next lesson, Charms, "I still like the fact that Hatchet got herself four weeks of detention."
Oliver shook his head in exasperation and murmured: "You and your unhealthy obsession with that girl. I don't like her either but can you please drop it for once?"
That took me by surprise and stopped me dead. I could only stare at his back for a while before I hurried after him. Was I really obsessed with Hatchet?
