Chapter 3
"Mandie, please tell me why you were blushing when you came back into the room!" begged Celia.
"I would also like to know," said Sallie, as she sat in a chair, grinning.
The girls were in their room, because the adults had come back, and it was almost time for lunch.
Mandie flushed.
"I told you, it was cold outside!" said Mandie, scrubbing her hands with soap vigorously.
Sallie and Celia shared a glance, shrugged, and decided that Mandie would tell them if she wanted to.

"Dimar, can I ask you something?" asked Joe slowly, as he sat on the bed, a slight frown on his face.
"Is it about Mandie?" asked Dimar, grinning at Joe, as he dried his hands.
Joe blushed slightly. He got embarrassed when asked about it, but not as much as Mandie.
"Umm, yes," said Joe, his eyes drifting outside, where he had stood with Mandie.
"What do you want to ask?" said Dimar seriously, sitting on the bed also.
"Well, I- i just can't imagine my life without her. I can't see a future for myself without her. But, I-i just don't know if she'll love me back," said Joe anxiously.
Dimar exhaled and thought for a moment.
"Well, I feel the same way about Sallie," said Dimar cautiously, making sure Joe didn't look directly into his eyes.
"Then you understand, I suppose," remarked Joe, still looking out the window.
"I say you should just ask her. Tell her you love her, and then pop the question. If she doesn't love you, she will say no sometime or other," advised Dimar, as Joe walked to the wash basin to wash up.
"Easier said than done," muttered Joe.
Dimar stepped out of the room, calling out a 'see you downstairs,' and chuckled, hoping Joe would have the same luck as he did.

" , Uncle Ned, could I-er, talk to y'all sometime? " asked Joe, as John, Uncle Ned, Dimar, and he sat in the parlor.
"What want to talk about?" inquired the old indian.
"Well- something, er, important," said Joe, nervously running his fingers through his unruly hair.
"Well, you can catch me tomorrow morning, around 5:30, but I don't know about Uncle Ned," said John, glancing at Uncle Ned.
"Yes, good time to talk," said Uncle Ned, nodding.
"Then 5:30, say, outside?" asked John.
Joe and Uncle Ned nodded.
"It's settled then, and I might know what to talk about," said John, giving a small grin at the blushing, nervous young man.
Uncle Ned nodded, also smiling.
Dimar nodded at Joe, and Joe nodded back. Their relationship had gotten better because Joe knew Dimar was after Sallie, although he had shown some admiration for Mandie before, which had made him quite jealous.
"Where is everyone?" thought Elizabeth aloud.
"In here, dear," called John.
Elizabeth and peered into the doorway.
"There y'all are," said Mrs. Woodard, sitting next to her husband.
"Why, Joe, what on earth can you be nervous about this time? Can you ever stop making your hair as unruly as ever?" scolded Mrs. Woodard gently, as Joe sat down nervously.
Mrs. Woodard fussed about Joe's hair with her hand.
"Oh, Mom," remarked Joe in a low voice, obviously embarrassed.
"It does seem like Joe and Mandie were children just yesterday, and here Joe is, taller than I, and Mandie, now a woman," remarked Elizabeth, who at night had silently shed a few tears over her daughter, who had grown so fast.
'They're expecting it as well,' thought Joe, somewhat grimly, knowing that Elizabeth might have not mentioned any of her other friends for a reason.
"They would grow sometime, my dear," said John, patting Elizabeth's hand.
"It leaves me feeling awful lonely," sighed , as she reluctantly left Joe's hair alone.
"Why, I thought you had a husband," said Dr. Woodard jokingly.
"Oh, stop it, you'll know what I mean, once he leaves home," said Mrs. Woodard, giving her husband a playful pat on the arm.
"Hello?" called Mandie, coming to the doorway with her friends.
"Here, Amanda," called Elizabeth.
Mandie, followed by Sallie and Celia, came into the parlor.
They had barely sat down, before a bell rang.
"That will be ," said John.
They heard voices coming into the house.
"Hello, Liza, where is everyone?" inquired Mrs. Taft.
"Dey be in de parlor, missus Taft," replied Liza.
They heard footsteps.
"Hello, everyone," said Mrs. Taft, peeking into the parlor.
"Grandmother!" exclaimed Mandie, getting up to hug the old woman.
"Hello, Amanda," said , returning Mandie's warm embrace.
hugged Elizabeth also, and greeted everyone else.
"John, Elizabeth, where is my room? I must freshen up after that train ride," said .
"Liza can show you, Mother," said Elizabeth.
"Alright, y'all go ahead and eat lunch, don't wait for me. I had lunch on the train, and I am quite full, and I will take a nap," called , as she went to find Liza.
Elizabeth nodded, and then turned to Mandie.
"Amanda, I forgot to tell you earlier, but your Grandmother and I have a surprise for you, and your friends," said Elizabeth.
"What is it, Mother?" asked Mandie, immediately interested.
"We will be hosting a ball here, on new year's eve," said Elizabeth, smiling at Mandie.
"O-oh." said Mandie, who never was too fond of balls.
"That's wonderful, ," added Celia, hoping Elizabeth didn't notice Mandie's disappointed face.
"Will it be just our friends we are inviting?" asked Mandie hopefully.
"Your grandmother invited some of her own friends, which I imagine will make it quite a party," said Elizabeth.
"O-oh." said Mandie again. She disliked her grandmother's rich, and sometimes snobby friends, whom she was expected to talk to.
"When will your fiance be arriving, Celia?" asked Elizabeth.
"He said he would arrive by the end of the week," replied Celia, glancing at her ring.
"Da lunch be ready!" announced Liza, as she danced into the parlor, and then back out.
They walked to the dining room, and sat down, Joe and Dimar sitting in front of Celia.
They didn't talk too much, and quickly finished lunch.
"Mmm! Chocolate cake!" exclaimed Joe, as Aunt Lou brought out a big chocolate cake. He ate four slices, and would have gone for a fifth slice, when the door to the dining room opened.
Everyone turned to see who had come.
Robert stood in the doorway, grinning.
"Robert!" cried Celia, as she got up and ran to him.
"Oh, Celia," said Robert, as he buried his face in her auburn hair.
"Robert, why didn't you tell me you were coming?" asked Celia, blushing at her rash action.
"I wanted to give you a nice surprise," said Robert.
"Well, you gave everyone a surprise," murmured Celia, leading Robert to a chair.
Joe watched the couple, and felt envious. He wished he and Mandie might be like that one day. One day.
DID YA LIKE IT? I hope so! As always, review! As I said before, I will try and post a chapter a week, unlike NeonNightLight! *Hint Hint!*
