Chapter 1: Snowballs and fun times.

A boy around thirteen shivered in the cold air as he walked through a snow covered forest that bordered a small neighborhood. He gritted his teeth and pulled his collar up in an attempt to block out the cold as he laughed to himself for letting the cold bother him.

He continued on until he got to a small cluster of bushes. Gently pushing them away he slipped through them and grimaced slightly as he stepped in a small puddle of slush in the melting snow.

Within minutes he came to a massive oak tree. He beamed at it and walked over to a rope that hung off a higher branch. He gritted his teeth and wrapped his legs and arms around it and began to climb. After a few painstaking minutes of trying not to slip he made his way to the top of it, where a few wooden planks were nailed together to make a small platform.

On the platform was a poster of some rock band that was stapled into the tree, a small blue bean bag and a snow covered shag rug that was probably better off in a bathroom than a tree at the end of winter.

The boy walked over to the beanbag, dusting snow off it before he sprawled out. Slipping his phone out of his pocket he began to scroll through it. A few minutes later a small breeze blew in, making him look up.

"Took you long enough." he muttered before looking down again.

"Well I'm here now." a voice then answered.

The boy smiled and turned off his phone, slipping it into his pocket. "Hi Frost."

"Hey Jamie." a boy with messy white hair and grayish-blue eyes answered.

"Where you been, you were supposed to meet me here." Jamie asked, feigning annoyance.

The spirit gave a small laugh. "I got busy ok, I only now managed to sneak off."

"Good job cause now you get a break." Jamie said as he gently laid his phone on the bean bag before scooting over to the rope. Wrapping his legs around it he began to scoot down it. Jack rose to his feet and looked over the flimsy railing at Jamie.

"Want any help?'' he called out as Jamie gently lowered himself down.

"No, actually ya.'' Jack scoffed slightly and jumped off the railing having the wind lower him until he was next to Jamie which he extended his hand to. Jamie grabbed tightly onto Jack's wrist beaming as he felt a gust of wind fill the air under him.

"Anyway, what do you want to do?" Jack asked as he lowered Jamie to the ground. Jamie studied Jack for a moment before giving a small smile. Leaning over he scooped a small pile of slushy snow in his hand giving a small frown as he dropped it to the ground.

"I was thinking about a snowball fight but now…" Jamie trailed off. The winter spirit sighed and flicked his staff causing a layer of fresh snow to fill the clearing.

"It's gone by tomorrow morning." Jack warned as he grabbed a handful of snow and leaned his staff against a nearby tree. Sculpting the snow into a small sphere he tossed it slightly in his hand before Jamie grabbed his own snowball.

Within minutes pure chaos had broken out; each boy happily dodged each other's attacks while throwing their own. A few minutes later Jamie stopped to catch his breath.

"You're not quitting now are you?" Jack asked jokingly as Jamie bent over breathing heavily.

"No, I just…I need a minute."

"Ok." Jack said, smiling as he flicked his hand. Jamie narrowed his eyes in suspicion at this. Looking around him Jamie noticed a thin patch of ice that had begun to form under his feet.

"No.." he muttered glaring at Jack who only responded by smirking. Jamie let out a small gasp as his feet went out from under him and he began to slide across a path of ice.

"I said I needed to rest! Not this!"

"Then relax and enjoy the ride." Jack shot back as he made a sharp left turn. Jamie bit his lip to keep from smiling as he actually found this slightly exhilarating. However the feeling quickly disappeared as he noticed the pond that laid at the edge of the woods.

"Trust me." Jack called down as Jamie opened his mouth to warn his friend. Jamie nodded slightly but carefully watched the pond as it came closer.

Moments later Jamie gasped as his body made a sharp turn as he changed direction and instead went flying into a snowbank.

He shivered as he got up and brushed snow off his hair and coat. Jack landed next to him balancing on top of his staff.

"Told ya." the spirit shrugged as he

"Aren't you supposed to protect us from fear, not scare us like that."

"I was not scaring you. I surprised you, there is a difference." Jack said as he slid off his staff and sat down next to Jamie.

"Same difference." Jamie muttered as he blew on his hands to warm them up. He then paused as he noticed a sparkling light in the sky. Squinting slightly he groaned inwardly as the northern lights appeared in the sky.

"What." Jack laughed as he followed Jamie's gaze. "Oh.." he muttered slightly confused. Turning back to Jamie he noticed the worried look on his face.

"I'm sure it's nothing, North probably just needs me again." Jamie nodded, not convinced.

"Will you come back once you guys finish?" the younger boy asked as rubbing the back of his neck.

"Definitely, don't worry." Jack said, giving Jamie a kind smile before he jumped into the air. "Thanks for the break!" he called out as the wind whipped him away.
