Chapter 2: Deadlines and magic portals.
Katherine is from the Guardian's of childhood book series AKA mother goose.
Hidden in the snow peaked mountains of the North there was a beautiful building made of wood and stone that was half carved into the mountains, this was the North Pole itself. The beautiful wood used to construct it had been worn away after hundreds of years of weather and was currently coated in snow and frost.
Jack let out little whoops of joy as he flipped and soared higher through the clouds. Lowering himself to closer currents of air he landed on a small ledge covered in snow next to a grand window.
Edging his way over to the window which was covered in frost causing it to blend into the snow covered landscape he eyed the small crank that was attached to the window sill. Grunting Jack gripped his hands around it and turned it clockwise, causing the window to slowly open with a loud creak.
Once it was big enough Jack squeezed through, pulling it closed with his free hand. Letting out a small breath as it latched shut he quickly slung his staff over his shoulder and continued on his way.
Jack winched as several Yeti's called out to him in a scolding tone. Shooting them a small smile as he passed them he hurried over to a wooden elevator that was attached to one wall.
Stepping inside it he pulled a small lever causing the doors to close and for it to begin rising upwards. As it came to a stop with a small ding he hurried through a winding hall before coming to the small overlook above the massive believers globe.
"There he is Jack Frost!" Jack winced but gave a small wave toward a massive man standing a few feet away. The man was a mountain of a man roughly several feet taller than Jack with broad shoulders with a massive white beard that nearly reached his stomach, attached to each of his hips was a massive sword with a blade easily the length of Jack's upper arm.
However he wasn't what made a small prickle of guilt start to form in Jack's stomach or who made him avoid eye contact. Instead it was a small girl with gray eyes and Auburn hair that had her arms crossed over there chest and was currently glaring at him as he walked towards them.
"Where were you?" The girl then asked him, her expression still unwavering.
"I was with Jamie." Jack shrugged as he flashed her a smirk. "You've kept me here all day saying that Manny needs me so I needed a break."
"And you decided sneaking away was the best option?"
"At the moment it did."
"Katherine." The other man said, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "He is here now and break is over I assume?" he asked, raising his gaze to Jack.
"Yep." Jack said as he leaned against the wall and grabbed a glass of water from a passing elf.
"When you were gone we figured out why Manny needs you." Katherine said as she grabbed a glass as well. Taking a small sip she twirled a strand of her hair around her finger before continuing.
"There are some people like you and they seem to have interacted with magic." She enunciated slowly.
Jack coughed as he choked on his water. "What?" he finally managed, wiping at his mouth with his hand.
"It sounded odd to me as well but Manny sent this." Walking over to a small panel of controls she pressed a button and a large blue crystal rose from the ground. Pressing another button filled it with a silver light and several images appeared above it.
A tulip like symbol, a sun, and a nightmare. Finally though, the symbol of a gorgeous snowflake appeared.
"We also got this." Katherine said as she pulled a beautiful painted snow globe with a silver and blue design painted across it from her pocket.
"I suppose it will take you where you need to go." She said, examining it before hanging it off to Jack. He examined it in his hands before looking up at her.
"So once I get there what do I do?"
"Find the people who know about magic well you do that they'll make sure nothing happens with Pitch." She said as she pressed the first button and the crystal sank back into the ground.
"They'll, you mean we'll. You aren't coming." Jack said as he slipped the snow globe into his pocket.
"You aren't going alone." Katherine stated firmly. Jack opened his mouth to say something when North cut him off.
"Katherine, perhaps it's best if Jack goes alone for now since then you will still be here for Santoff Claussen." Katherine held Jack's gaze for a moment before slowly nodding at North's suggestion.
"Great, now that that's done I'll be off." Jack as he walked over back to the hallway. North nodded at this and turned before making his way back to his office. Jack paused as the sound of footsteps echoed behind him.
"Stay safe." Katherine whispered, wrapping her arms around him. Jack nodded and hugged her back before gently letting go and continuing down the hall.
Jamie paced back and forth as he kicked at some snow. Even though Jack had said everything would be fine he still got anxious when Jack got summoned and he didn't know why.
"Hiya Bennet." Jamie turned and breathed a sigh of relief as his friend came into view and floated clearing below.
"So what's the prognosis?" Jamie muttered, shoving his hands into his pockets.
"I get to go somewhere magical!" Jack said over dramatically as he whisked the snow globe from his pocket.
"What! Are you going alone cause if you are i'm not letting you!" Jamie cried out stubbornly. Jack sighed and gave him a deadpanned look.
"If i'm not letting Katherine come, I'm sure not letting a thirteen year old." Jamie frowned at this.
"When are you going?"
"About now, I need to grab some stuff though beforehand." Jamie nodded. "I just came to say bye."
"Well good luck Frost." Jack gave a dramatic bow and smiled at him.
"See you later Bennet!"
Landing on the branch of an oak tree in the middle of New York City's central park. Jack quickly walked over to the trunk of it and placed his hand against the rough bark of the tree watching it twist until a door frame appeared.
The winter spirit slipped through it and into the place he had claimed as his home for the past five years.
The inside of the tree wasn't nearly as pretty as the outside; it was cluttered with artifacts and furniture from different time periods. Against one wall was a modern and sleek T.V with a plump eighteen-hundreds style couch in front of it, well a staircase led to a overhanging balcony that overlooked the first floor lined another, were a small bed laid in the middle on it with a nightstand stacked with books stood next to it.
Jack placed his staff against the wall and walked up the staircase. Gently closing one of the books that laid on the nightstand he grimaced as he realized it was one he had borrowed from Ombric, the leader of Santoff Claussen.
Making a mental note to return it he went over to a small wardrobe he opened it and grabbed a small dagger from the bottom of it.
Man in the moon had given it to Jack when he first became a Guardian and though he didn't use it much Jack thought it would be best to bring it. He grabbed a small belt and tied it around his waist before grabbing the dagger and tucking it into it.
Re-grabbing his staff, he raised the snow globe above his head before throwing it into the ground.
A beautiful multi-colored portal appeared from where it had landed. Jack took a quick deep breath and stepped through. After a few minutes Jack flew out of it and onto a hard substance of some kind, winding him. Jack groaned in pain and he could tell that whatever he had landed on would leave a mark or two.
The guardian slowly sat up and picked up his staff. Once his eyes adjusted to his surroundings he saw that he had landed on a hard cobblestone slab of some kind.
Jack gasped at what he saw next, standing about twenty feet away from him was a magnificent castle constructed of carved wood and stone. Something then caught his eye and he squinted to see what it was against the blinding sun. Lining the roof seemed to be a silver tiling of some kind.
Pushing himself up he jumped into the air and flew over to it. Upon closer inspection he saw it was ice, a beautiful thin layer of ice covering the entire roof of the castle.
Jack's hand slowly went to his mouth in a mix of shock and excitement.
"How…" he breathed as he stared in amazement as the ice gilded smooth and cold under his fingers. Suddenly a voice then broke him out of his trance as he snapped his head up looking for the source of the voice.
"Thank you Anna" A female voice then chimed.
"You're welcome."
"That was fun!" A young voice then chimed in.
"It was." A man's voice echoed. Jack watched as a woman with light strawberry blonde hair then exited a small building attached to the castle.
"I'll be right back." She called out into the building before turning she took a few steps before stopping.
The winter spirit held his breath and willed himself not to move. The woman then turned and looked directly at Jack. Jack closed his eyes and hoped she was looking through his at something
She then froze and her hand went to her mouth.
"Jack Frost." she whispered. Jack's blood went cold and his eyes flew open as he realized what she had just said.
Well sorry, not sorry Jack but you just got busted by Anna. Hope you enjoyed chapter 2.
(Also the enchanted tree Jack lives in is a nod to the guardians of the childhood book series and the one he lives in.)
Peace! :D
