Mirabel was 8 when she finally got her first sewing lesson.
In her and Casandra's defense they were always busy doing something whether it was climbing trees and buildings, reading books, cleaning, cooking, or playing.
But, it was when Cas had tumbled and ripped her pants and looked at Mirabel and asked her to fix it that she had finally remember she didn't know how to sow yet.
"Oh? I forgot you don't know yet," Cas mumbled.
"Yeah, you mentioned you'd get your Abuela to show….me?" Mira looked confused as she gave the older girl a look, "You want me to show me how to sow?"
"Huh?" Cas muttered as she motioned her up the stairs to her room, "Yeah, that does sound weird when you say it like that."
…..
Casita in the future was very much just like the Casita of the past. As the young girl looked around she saw that Casita had another floor and that she only recognized a few doors.
Dolores', Luisa's, Cas', and the nursery door.
One of the doors caught her eye though. It stood near Luisa's and it read Mirabel. On it she assumed her future self stood with a smile holding THE candle.
Cas tugged on Mira's hand, "Come on."
Mirabel allowed herself to be dragged but pointed at the door as they walked away, "Is that my door? When do I get a door?!"
Cas shrugged as she dragged her down the stairs, "I don't know? I think it came with the front door?"
"The front door?"
"It's a long story."
…..
Cas dragged Mirabel into the dinning room and smiled as she saw an older woman probably in her early 40's with fairer skin and brown hair sowing at the table, "Tia Maria! Can you teach sowing?"
Maria looked up with a loving smile, "Casandra, I thought you said you got tired of pricking your fingers?"
Cas nodded seriously, "Yes but It's not a lesson for me but Mira."
Mirabel felt self conscious as Maria looked her over, "Hola."
"Is this your friend? Mira, was it?, hello to you too," Maria smiled at her, "She looks a lot like you….You could be twins…"
"No, I'm her Abuela," Mirabel honestly replied.
Maria paused in her sowing and really looked at Mirabel surprised, "Wait…"
Footsteps were heard as a familiar person entered. She squeaked as she looked at the tiny Mirabel, "Is that a tiny Mirabel? Why is there a tiny Mirabel?"
"I'm trying to figure that," Maria admitted.
"Dolores? You got old," Mirabel commented, surprised.
"You can't call old people old," Cas stage whispered to Mirabel.
"But they are old," Mirabel whispered back.
Dolores could only squeak again as Maria tried not to laugh.
…
"So you have to be patient," Maria smiled as tiny Mirabel her tongue out in concentration as she threaded the needle.
Dolores smiled at the scene before looking back at Cas, "You've been going back to visit Mirabel for three years?"
Cas rolled her eyes, "Yeah, Tia Dolores. I tell you all the time I'm going to see Abuela."
"In our defense, we didn't know Time Travel was included in your time powers," Dolores muttered.
Cas shrugged, they never asked either.
Dolores tilted her head, "Sounds like your Abuela is on her way back….also seems Jaime's hurt he's knee while running. You probably want to get the first aid kit for him, Cas."
The girl got up hearing about her little brother's injury and ran up the stairs to get it for him. Mirabel tried to focus on the cloth she was working on and smiled every time Maria gave her praise.
But her concentration was broken as a teenager walked into the room with brown and a scowl. He didn't acknowledge them as he pulled out a glass and then waved his hand as water filled it from nowhere.
"Wow," Mirabel watched amazed.
The teenage boy added a powder and twirled his finger making the water twirl and mix with the powder making a purple drink. He turned and finally acknowledged Mirabel, Dolores, and Maria.
"Why is Casandra's hair curly? She hates when you curl her hair?" He asked half inserted.
"Maximiano, this is actually Tia Mirabel at 8. Seems Cas can also time travel and has made friends with her," Dolores explained calmly to the boy.
Maximiano stared, blinked twice, and then scoffed, "Are you kidding me? Not only can Cas slow, sped up, and rewind time, now she can time travel?! Like how is that fair? I can create and manipulate water. That's like nothing compared to what Cas can do. I'm convinced the Miracle is playing favorites."
Mirabel looked concerned for a minute at his words not wanting a fight but relaxed as Maria rolled her eyes in a loving matter.
"I said the same thing with your Tia Isabela and her powers. Her power was way more impressive than mine but trust me every gift is a blessing," Dolores commented with fondness in her voice.
The boy rolled his eyes, "I guess, I'll be in my room."
Maximiano left the room and Mirabel looked at Maria, "Maximiano is…."
"Oh, Luisa's grandson. So Cas' 2nd cousin and your great nephew," Maria supplied as she pointed to the cloth she was working on and began explaining her mistake.
Casita rippled their titles as they opened the door and an older woman walked in with a crying boy.
"Oh, poor Jaime," Maria tsked as stood up and got a wet rag.
Dolores smiled at the concerned looking Mirabel as she looked over at the sobbing six year old, "Jaime's super speed gets the best of him a lot. Tripping is very painful."
"Mama's food can heal that," Mirabel replied without thinking.
Dolores got a sad look on her face, "It would. But this is over 50 years in your future, Mira. Both our Mama's would be over a 100 years old. But we may have gifts but we still have to follow nature's rules. So, they're no longer here. They're in heaven with Abuelo Pedro."
"Oh. I never thought of that," Mirabel frowned. She didn't like the fact that Mama and Tia Pepa were not here but it did make sense.
Cas came into the kitchen just as the old woman set the crying Jaime on the table, "Here Abuela!"
"Thank you, Mi Amor," the woman looked at Cas, allowing Mirabel to see her large green glasses.
"Hey! You're me!" Mira pointed at here.
The woman, let's call her Abuela Mirabel, blinked surprised and looked at her tiny self, "Is….Is that a tiny me?"
"Yeah, she's my best friend. I brought her here to learn sewing from you and Tia Maria," Cas replied matter of factly.
Abuela Mirabel stared at her granddaughter confused, "you brought her here?"
"Apparently, Casandra can time travel," Maria explained as she signed to the crying boy to try to get him to calm down.
Abuela Mirabel looked at her granddaughter again even more confused, "So, you decide to go back in and be my friend?"
"Yeah, you said you wished you had a friend like me as a kid," Cas smiled brightly.
"I said wish, corazon," Abuela Mirabel sighed rubbed her temple, "I didn't know you could do it…."
Mira looked sadly at her older self, "But, I like being her friend!"
All the adults all looked at little Mira's sad as her eyes teared up. They all accepted that Cas and Mira would remain friends right then and there. After all, no one could say no to Mira's puppy dog eyes.
….
"Mi amor," Julieta noted Mirabel wasn't really eating, "are you not hungry?"
"Oh, I ate early with my friend Cas, Mami," She replied happily.
"Wait, Mirabel has friends," Camilo joked, earning him an elbow from Dolores.
"Yeah, I went to Cas' house! And It's huge, even bigger than our Casita!" Mirabel began to explain.
"Quit fibing," Isabela rolled her eyes, Casita was the biggest house in the Encanto.
Isabela started rambling about her day then cutting Mirabel off.
Leaving Mirabel to push her food around the plate, and thinking about how everyone had actually listened to her at Cas' family dinner.
