Chapter 17: Heartless

David smiled to himself as he tasted of Raven's sweet lips time after time as she sat upon his lap. The venom that leaked from her fangs was his perfect poison and he would die again here in this very spot if it meant he could have her with him forever, he thought. His hands travelled gently across her back, caressing her lightly as if he were afraid she might break. When she had first come back into the cave, her thoughts had been lustful, as had his, but when she had settled onto his lap and he had kissed her he had picked up on a different want. Something softer and sweeter. His fiery girl had a need to slow down; to enjoy just being held in the safe haven of his arms without worrying about war or empires or duty. She was giving herself over to him, a little at a time, he realized. Not her body, as he had already claimed, but herself. He pulled back from the poisonous sweetness and looked deeply into the maroon darkness that her crimson eyes had become. "What a pirate's chest of rare jewels she is." he thought. "Who am I that she should trust me…I thought myself merely lucky that she had come to me at all. It was a wonderful delight that we mentally synched together so strongly and so fast, and I was overtaken by the forcefulness of the joining of our bodies. But this…this is still another side of her that has been unseen. She is as gentle as a soft summer rain. No one has seen her thus, but for me. How exquisite…" He placed his lips against her forehead and held them there for a moment, then pulled her tight against his chest.

Raven let herself be held tightly and sighed deeply as a world of burdens temporarily lifted from her shoulders. "If this could be my resting place for eternity, I would give up my immortal soul." she thought. Her arms wound tightly around David's neck and she buried her face against his chest, breathing in his smell—musk, cigarettes, lightning, ocean waves, and his own deadly blood. She nuzzled further into him, wanting to be as close as possible, wanting to be inside him, hidden securely away from the demands placed upon her. "And even if there was nothing to hide from," she said to herself, "It is still where I would want to be. In the perfect haven of his darkness, surrounded by his fierce protection. Is this perhaps what humans define as 'love'?"

David whispered against her hair then, his breath smokey and cool. He had caught her thought. "This is beyond 'love'." he said, nuzzling her head with his chin. "To feel love, one must have a heart, and we, by definition in being what we are, are heartless. This, this is more. There is no word in any language to describe what this is, and that seems fitting."

Raven's lips curled into a smile and she released another sigh that turned into a purr as she leaned back to gaze adoringly into David's glacial-blue eyes. "More'. That is fitting." She raised her hand to caress his high cheekbone and trace his sensuous lips with her fingers. "Now, my Night King, take me out into the darkness. I am thirsty. And I long to watch you stalk and kill. Then perhaps you will take me back to your bed, safe from the sun, and show me how heartless you are."

David smiled then, teeth and fangs gleaming. "By your command." he growled, rising quickly from his throne, spinning her around and around as she laughed merrily, kissing him messily about the face. The night swallowed them as they fled the cave, two heartless beings bound by more than the dark.
