I always thought that Nick and Jess' break-up was really well done but far too sudden. This story is intended as a little background as to how the "power couple" came to that sad decision. "You're talking to your boyfriend right?" Jess looked at her - not at all bothered by her nosiness, just surprised by her willingness to ask. "I can tell, you do that weird smile."

It's Valentine's Day and all Schmidt wants to do is go out and find the love of his life, but for some reason, Nick is insisting on meeting him, along with Winston and Cece, at the loft at nine...(rated to be safe!)

Due to their differing views on Christmas, Nick is in Chicago for the holiday without Jess. The absence of Jess (in addition to a handful of unexpected visitors) may cause him to change his perspective on the holiday.

AU! Nick Miller is still reeling from the end of his marriage to Caroline, and so is his 11 year old son, Daniel. But soon Danny's beautiful, quirky, amazing teacher has turned both their worlds upside-down. Suddenly Nick finds himself falling fast, but he's not the only one. Science teacher Ryan Geauxinue is also hoping for a chance with Jess, and Nick's not sure he can compete.

Post-breakup Nick Miller finally gets serious about writing his book (and discovers a rather embarrassing love for fancy coffee drinks). He decides the book might be the only way he can honestly tell Jess how he feels, but he's having trouble finishing it, especially since the guys keep trying to hook him up with the girl he asked to edit it.
