Note: Until we are told otherwise, I doubt that Luffy or his friends and family view him as a child of destiny. He's a person of strong will and conviction who views the impossible as possible so long as you are willing to work for it.

Luffy is angry in this chapter, and he has good reason. He may not want to live with regret, but he can be hurt and resentful. He's gone through a lot in two years, and unfortunately for Garp, he will hear it all.

Also, I don't own One Piece; I am just a fan writing fanfiction.

Chapter One

The fire was on hold while Franky was building their new ship, The Emperor of Sun and Sea, Nika. Robin had recommended the name to honor their victory in Skypiea and their friends they would revisit on the Fishman Island.

Luffy giggled delightedly at the name of the new ship. He loved all the changes Franky was making for them. Nika was a carrack like the Sunny but twice as big, making him shy of a galleon. There was an operations system for sailing and navigating that Franky designed around Nami's navigational skills and Jinbei's sailing style. Luffy oohed and awed with Usopp and Chopper over all the gadgets Franky included in the ship that would make her faster and more sustainable than the cola-based energy they depended on for propulsion and firing the Gaon Cannon. Usopp was brought in to design a weapon system that Usopp and Franky used to talk about creating. Iceberg had provided them with additional materials and his expertise in the design. Luffy didn't understand it except that it would be faster, stronger, and have laser beams. He liked laser beams the most.

At Franky's insistence, Luffy would even have his quarters with a hammock AND bunk beds. That way, he could have a sleepover with Chopper and Usopp. Robin had promised to help him decorate his new room after turning down Nami. He had been delighted with the design and everything that would make their home on the seas more secure and defendable.

Nami was able to sell the odd sword found at Enies Lobby. The money from that and the money and treasure she and Usopp found when they raided Enies Lobby brought them over five million beri. Nami was so giddy that she didn't complain when Luffy finally did throw his party.

Nami reasoned that Luffy needed cheering up. First, there was a coded message from Jinbei in the paper, and then Luffy's grandfather showed up.

Garp arrived at Water 7 two days after the fall of Enies Lobby.

Since a long recovery hadn't been required this time, Luffy had been awake when his jichan decided to visit him. Luffy hadn't been at the guesthouse; Nami had dragged him out for shopping. He needed new sandals, and she was making him get boots for when they went to winter islands. Luffy endured the measuring and standing still while Nami ordered him new clothes, and Luffy rushed off with Robin and Zoro as soon as possible.

Robin was shopping for her room while Zoro picked up some books for Chopper and supplies for Usopp, who was finally resting per doctor's orders.

He chattered happily as Robin chose linens for her room as well. She had pretty colors like lilac, rose, and soft blue. Robin chose soft silks and soft cotton. When Luffy asked her why she was picky about soft fluffy, he decided he wanted the same after explaining and allowing him to touch them. He found his own in his favorite colors, and he chose a pretty color so Robin could have a sleepover as well.

He checked on Robin, and he was happy to see she was relaxed and smiling like the Robin she had been in since they reunited in Sabaody. She had found a pair of sunglasses, and she wore her hair in a braided bun that she allowed Usopp to do for her while Chopper examined her facial injuries. Everything was superficial, but she did have some swelling where that coward had kicked her.

Even though it wasn't necessary, Usopp formally apologized to Luffy and the crew for his younger self's mutiny against his Captain. It had never bothered Luffy, but Usopp was a man of principles (and cowardness,) so Luffy accepted his apology and declared that they celebrate.

While returning to the Gallery- La guesthouse, there was a commotion from Water 7's dock. People were screaming about Marines. Suddenly, the crowd closed in on the Straw Hats. Some town folks gathered their purchases and swiftly bundled the pirates off to the Gallery-La offices.

The city mayor, Iceberg, was at his and Franky's master's former shipyard working on the new dream ship.

Luffy and his crew that had gone out shopping arrived just in time to see Garp knock a hole in the guesthouse wall.

"Jichan! Stop wreaking people's houses!" Luffy hollered. "You are as bad as the worst pirates on the Grand Line!" He declared as he stormed forward, pushing past the startled Marines. Luffy didn't look like the ruthless pirate HQ made him out to be. He was a small, skinny kid with a mop of wild black hair, wearing an oversized jumper, board shorts, and sandals. But there was something about him that had the veteran seamen wary.

At this back were the Pirate Hunter and the Devil Child.

Nico Robin looked bright and lovely in a flora sundress matched with a lightweight long-sleeved cardigan. Roronona Zoro carried his three blades, but he wore a dark grey robe over loose trousers, heavy boots, and a dark gray sash. Zoro had a hand resting casually on the hilt of swords. He was ready to move if anyone dared to make a move towards his Captain's back.

Luffy strode forward and met his grandfather head-on.

There was some resentment on his part. Ace had been captured by now, and before, Garp had allowed Ace to be executed. Luffy swallowed his rage and disappointment as he reached up and lowered the brim of his hat over his eyes. "Jichan," Luffy said lowly, "We need to talk."

Dangerous

Garp knew something was wrong when his grandson approached him instead of running in the opposite direction. Little Luffy had met him head-on with a controlled burst of Conqueror's Haki from the boy had surprised the old man almost as much as having the boy refer to him by his title (he didn't know Luffy was aware of who his jichan was other than his jichan.) They were alone in the guesthouse. The cook, who introduced himself as Blackleg Sanji, had served them tea and a small snack. He is now outside preparing a barbecue for Garp's men and crew.

Garp was impressed. Not one of the pirates seemed intimidated by the marines around the place. Not even Nico Robin, who had surrendered to the World Government just days before. Now she was lounging outside the guesthouse with a young redheaded girl while a long-nosed little boy and a raccoon dog/Yeti repaired the wall Garp had broken. Only the Pirate Hunter was in the room with them. His eyes were closed as he rested against a nearby wall with his swords on his left shoulder.

Garp sighed, "Where did I go wrong with you boys?" He said, looking at his grandson, who was staring at him. "You were supposed to be—"

"Why would I serve the people that want to kill my brothers and Ace just for being alive," Luffy shot back. "I have friends that need to be saved. I will not let you or the filthy red dog stand in my way."

"Boy—"

Luffy slapped the table between them. The Haki of the Supreme King flared as the boy glared at him. "You still serve those filthy Tenryubito even though they hurt Sabo so bad that now he doesn't remember us!" Garp started to speak, but Luffy powered right over him, his voice carrying over the now silent courtyard. "The Navy lied about Ohara; that bastard Spandam admitted that his father lied about Robin. He lied about Franky's master, and now you are lying about me. I defeated Crocodile, not your cowardly Marines. I freed Nami's island from Arlong when your pathetic Navy took bribes to let a Fishman enslave humans because of those nasty Tenryubito. I stopped Axe-hand Morgan from terrorizing Shell Town. I defeated Captain Kuro, Buggy, and Don Krieg. I did what your Marines and Navy couldn't do, and I will beat Mingo. I will defeat Kaido and save Wano, and I will be the Pirate King."

Luffy took a deep breath to settle himself.

Garp was stunned. He never expected such vitriol or condemnation from Luffy. His sweet, happy-go-lucky little grandson was railing at him, flashing Haki around like some unruly brat while he insulted the very institution Garp believed.

"Robin isn't a devil," Luffy was shouting now. "She wants to know the real history of the world. The pigeon's stupid boss wants the weapon so he can rule the world. But you won't go after him because he's just another corrupt official who can ruin anyone's life. The guy was so stupid that he triggered a Buster Call when trying to talk to CP9. You wanted me and my brothers to have served under somebody like that?"

Garp knew his men were listening, but he made no move to silence the boy. He was curious about where Luffy had gotten his information because the boy wasn't wrong. He didn't care who knew the truth, and he was using it as a weapon against his grandfather and the institution he served.

"The Marines are worse than some of the cruelest pirates. You kill innocent people. I have a bounty because I helped free people and exposed bad people, but I am the bad guy. I want to have fun and adventures. I am helping my crew reach their dreams, and they are helping me reach mine. We are not hurting anybody, but the Navy and the Marines are hurting people. Caesar Clown is kidnapping children and trying to make giants. Mingo stole King Riku's throne, and Kaido killed Oden. You are slavers, and you let the nasty Tenryubito hurt and abuse people. You are never there when people need help, but you are there to make sure people suffer." Luffy put his hat back on as he stepped away from the table. "Ace is stupid. He's going up against Blackbeard, who ate the Yami-Yami no mi, and he will lose. I know you won't lift a hand to save him, Vice Admiral, but I will because Ace needs to know he has a family to protect him."

"I love you, boys, more than anything," Garp finally managed to get out.

Luffy refused to look back. He realized that he still hadn't forgiven his grandfather for letting Ace die two years later. "You love the Marines more than us." There was a trace of tears in Luffy's voice. "I think it would be best if you were to leave, Vice Admiral. You have the family you want, and I have to protect the family I have."

"Luffy—"

Three years later, he could still smell Ace's burning flesh in his nose. He clenched his hands into fists at his side to remind himself that Ace's blood wasn't on his hands.

"Ace would die to save me," Luffy said softly. "He did die saving me. Akainu was going to hit me with his lava, but Ace took the hit instead. He died, impaled on that bastard's fist, and you stood there-"

"…what are you…."

"Three years later, I can't forget," Luffy choked. "My crew and I came back in time, and I still can't look at you. Ace is alive, but I know you will let him die, and I can't—" He turned to face Garp again, and the old man flinched from the hurt and anger in the boy's eyes. "You told me then when I tried to save my brother that we were enemies. I shot your flag…!"

"I am your jichan!" Garp roared defiantly.

"You are a maricas!" Luffy shouted back. "Doflamingo is still alive. The Tenryubito terrorizes people, and you are doing nothing to help people. You are a maricas! Everyone in the Navy and the Marines is lower than filth. Dark Justice, Absolute Justice, Slow Justice, none of it matters because you bow your heads to the worst criminals in the world and scrap before the foulest scum who dares to call themselves Saints."

Luffy left through the ruined wall with Zoro at his back. He saw a man with a sword dressed in a brown suit with a fedora hovering, but he walked right past him. Luffy didn't know any of his grandfather's men. He knew nothing about his grandfather except the little he learned on those rare visits when he was a child and then during the battle at Marineford. Luffy still loved his grandfather, but the respect he had for h had died the same day Ace did.

Suddenly Koby was standing before him. Luffy still had a few inches on Koby, but there was no mistaking his friend, who had once cheerfully declared himself Luffy's enemy. Back then, Luffy had laughed and encouraged the other boy to pursue his dreams of becoming an Admiral, but now after the war, Punk Hazard, Dressrosa, and Wano, Luffy's contempt for the Navy and the Marines were hugging him.

Luffy would have pulled away, but Koby did it first, and he was talking. Luffy was grabbed by the hand and dragged away from the crowd and the watchful eyes of his crew. The spoiled son stayed away while Koby pulled Luffy into the city this time.

They walked for a while until they found a scrapyard. Koby handed Luffy a bag of roasted chestnuts he had purchased while they walked along with a cola bottle. They ate in silence for a while. Luffy didn't know what to say, so he was shocked when Koby said, "I thought I was the only one sent back. It's good to know I am not alone, Luffy-san."
