John was woken up by someone shaking him awake, however they left before he could get a good look on them. He looked down on his arm to find a shield with the picture of a cooked rabbit.

Huh?

It took John a few seconds to remember where he was, but when he did, any hint of sleepiness was completely erased by the joy and excitedness. He checked his status.

He almost squealed in excitement as he switched back to his default shield and watched his defense increase, but his speed stayed the same.

It does work!

John flew out of the door, almost ramming head first into Ren. The four of them were led back into the throne room and saw several people gathered in front of the king.

"We have gathered brave warriors who will fight the Waves with you, legendary heroes," the king explained.

There are 12 in total. So do all of us get three?

"Now, our future champions! Time to begin your journey! Pick the hero you want to fight alongside!" the king suddenly exclaimed John watched as the people in front of him began to walk towards one of the other three heroes, leaving him to be completely alone.

Damn, dodgeball all over again.

Three girls joined Motoyasu, Itsuki got four companions, and Ren got the most adventurers, a total of five. While no one at all was behind John.

Well this is unexpected…. well actually not at all considering the glares I got yesterday.

"I have to admit, I wasn't expecting this," the king said in a worried voice.

"No volunteers? He must have no charisma," someone said.

Fair enough, I'm not exactly a looker.

Somebody walked up to the king and whispered in his ear. Just for a moment John swore he saw the king smile. But it was just as quickly gone.

"There have been rumors that the Shield Hero's knowledge of this world is faulty," the king replied. "Legends say that the heroes come with a firm understanding of our lands."

Having low attack is gonna be a pain against bosses, but I suppose I can still level up with slimes for now.

"I see… that's unfortunate, but I guess I'll just have to manage," John replied optimistically.

"Are you sure you're gonna manage with 1 attack point?" Motoyasu whispered to John, leaning closer as to not let anyone else hear.

"I don't think I have much of a choice, now do I?" John whispered back. Motoyasu shrugged.

"Sir Hero," a voice behind Motoyasu said. A girl with bright red hair stepped out from behind and walked up to John.

"Would you allow me to join the Shield Hero?" she asked.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes!" she replied quickly.

Well she's quite the looker. I wonder how she would do in a fight though.

The king seemed to be in deep thought for a second before he looked around. "Are there any others who wouldn't mind joining the shield hero?"

John looked around and his eyes fell on a pendant some people were holding or wearing around their necks. It was a small metal necklace with the sword, bow, and a spear engraved on it.

Where's the shield though?

When no one answered the king, he sighed.

"I suppose we'll have to take other measures. Shield hero, you will have to recruit people for your party on your own."

"Alright!"

"Every month we shall provide each hero with the funds they require. This time, the shield hero will receive a slightly higher payment than the others."

Wait, really? I was already prepared to do this solo.

"Here are your initial war chests. Please accept them. The shield hero gets 800 silver coins, while the rest will get 600. Use this to buy all the necessary equipment and set forth on your journey."

""""Yes, sir!"""" all four of them said in unison. They were led out of the castle and finally got to go their separate ways. The others were still looking around wildly at the thick walls and the blocky world.

"Later, John!" Motoyasu said, walking away. "Take good care of her, you hear me?"

"It's sad that we can't party up together, but good luck with recruiting," Itsuki added.

"See you again when the time comes," Ren chimed in.

"Stay safe you guys!" John waved to them and put the bag of coins into his pocket. He turned to the red haired girl next to me.

"My name is John by the way. Thank you for joining me," John said, reaching out for a handshake.

"My name is Myne Suphia. It is an honor to fight with you," she said as she shook his hand.

"Oh, but the honor is all mine," John shook her hand for a few more seconds, before breaking the silence.

"Shall we get going Myne? Otherwise the other heroes will leave us in the dust."

"Right! Would you like me to show you around the castle town to start off?"

"Actually, I was thinking of suiting up and fighting some beginner monsters for now, to see how to properly fight with this thing," John replied, pointing to the shield on his arm.

"I know just the place then! Follow me!" she exclaimed and ran off. With the slight boost to his stats, John was just barely able to catch up despite being quite out of shape. Soon they arrived at a small building and Myne led John inside.

"I wholeheartedly recommend this place," Myne exclaimed as she swung the door open. Inside was still just as blocky as outside, but the weapons weren't blocky.

I guess only physical blocks get cubed, and take up one cubic meter, however the items that can be held aren't? This world just does what it wants. I wonder if I can mine the same way.

"Welcome," a tall bald man with scars on his face said from behind the counter. "Is this your first time in a weapons shop? You sure know how to pick 'em."

"Actually, my companion brought me here," John replied, gesturing to Myne. The man raised his eyebrows when his eyes fell on her.

"Have we met before, Miss? Why do you look so familiar?" he asked.

"I've come shopping here before. Your shop is quite famous, you know," she replied.

"Ain't that nice of ya. So what can I do for you, strangely dressed fella?" the man asked, looking at John.

"Can't you tell?" Myne asked. John lifted his shield for the man to see.

"You're one of the heroes? Ah, I see. You've got a shield. You must be the one with faulty knowledge."

"My name is John Smith. And while my knowledge might not be accurate, I'm sure I'll be able to learn on the go. Pleased to make acquaintances with you!" John replied, reaching his hand out.

"John eh? Well, if you'll be a regular, I won't give two hoots what you wield. Nice to meet ya, kid," the blacksmith shook John's hand, almost crushing it in the process

"Anyways, could you provide Sir Hero with the equipment he needs? Our budget is, let's see… Around 250 silvers."

"Alright, let's see... " the man replied, "Left to right, that's copper, reinforced copper, iron, and reinforced iron in ascending order of cost."

"Let's test these out!" John excitedly grabbed one, but was surprised when a bolt of electricity ran through his arm.

"Ouch! What the hell?"

He tried again with boths hands, but received an even worse shock.

"Was that a prank? Or is something wrong with me?" John asked, looking at his shield.

"I don't get it? That shouldn't happen."

Legendary Weapon Rule Violation:

Holding non-assigned weapon

"Never mind, I figured it out. Looks like I can only wield shields. You got a spiky shield by any chance? Or a shield with super high defense."

"I think I have some of those in the back, give me a second."

Guess I'll go the annoying route and dual wield shields to annoy every single enemy.

John walked over to a wall covered in shields and tried to swing with it, but another shock followed. It wasn't as strong as the other two, so the shield didn't fly out of his hand, however he stopped trying to swing it.

A Hero may not hold, with intent to fight, any other weapon other than their assigned legendary weapons.

So I can't even use other shields? Why?

Suddenly the gem of the shield lit up and a new window opened in his status.

I CAN COPY SHIELDS?! That's so cool! And this shield has better stats than my base one! But how does Lightning resistance work? Like, does it add on top of normal defense? Or does it act on its own?

John tried to equip the shield, but it wouldn't let him. Then he noticed the Level 5 required} on top.

"Here they are. But just saying, the second one isn't cheap," the blacksmith said, coming back with two shields. The first one looked like his normal shield, but it had a triangle end on top and bottom, and it was covered in small spikes. The second one was half as tall as John, and it looked like it was made out of obsidian, except it was red and giving off a faint glow.

"Woah, is that glowing obsidian?"

"Obsidian? Nah, this is the meteorite shield. I got my hands on a few pieces of this and turned it into a shield as an experiment," Erhard explained, putting the two shields in front of John.

He grabbed the two shields and looked at his status

[Meteorite (Glowing Obsidian) Shield] {Level 40 Required}

Abilities Unmastered:

Equip Effect: [Meteorite Shield]

Special Effect: (50 Blast Resistance)

NANI?! 200 defense!? Wow! I mean… it's huge and heavy as hell, but it looks like its stats are worth it. And this Meteorite shield… is it a masterable skill? It has square prentansies. Can't wait till I reach level 40.

"Hey kid, you've been staring at that shield for a good minute now. It's gonna cost you a lot you know," the blacksmith said, pulling John out of his thoughts.

"Ah, sorry about that. I was just surprised about it's huge stats."

"Yeah, but I would still recommend armor. It's cheaper, and it can be easily upgraded later."

"What do you have in terms of armor?"

"For your level and budget? I'd say this chainmail set," he replied. John looked over to the armor stand with a chainmail set.

Huh. Either this world can craft chainmail, or he spent a ton of time repairing dropped items. Either way, that's pretty cool.

"How much for just the chestplate and leggings?"

"That would be 75 silver."

"Alright, let's try it on," John replied, quickly putting on the set on top of his clothes. It was a bit heavier than a winter jacket and he watched as his defense increased from 17 to 26.

"So how much can we resell it for?" Myne asked.

"If it's undamaged, I can give you 65 silver for it."

John took a few steps back and forth to see how he would move in the armor. It didn't seem to slow him down at all. He put the money on the table and turned to Myne.

I'll copy the other shields later. They wouldn't do much for me anyways since I'm too low of a level.

"Alright! I think we're ready!" he said. Myne led him out the door and into an open field. Inside the forest he saw an area where the leaves were a bit darker, and a few slimes were on the open field. They were mostly tiny, but there were a few medium size ones here and there.

"Wow, the view is amazing," John gasped, looking at the field in front of him. A small slime started to jump towards him.

"Time to grind!" he yelled to no one in particular, and started to change towards the slimes.

Ok, there are mostly tiny slimes. If my knowledge holds up, they do 0 damage. The medium ones do like 3 points of damage, but the defense works differently, so it shouldn't do any damage at all. And so far I don't see any big ones, but 6 attack won't do anything either. So if they have 0 defense, then even with my low attack they won't be much of a problem.

The first 3 slimes made their way towards him and John smashed them with his shield. They exploded and dropped some slime balls and exp. Once the exp finished collecting, John was just below half the exp he needed for level 1. He also got 5 slimeballs he quickly put into his inventory.

"Not bad Sir hero. But don't let your guard down, there are more coming!" Myne yelled from under a tree. John turned around with a huge smile and ran towards the slimes, smashing one after another with his shield, gaining quite a decent amount of exp. Though he got a little too excited for his own good.

While he was taking care of all the small slimes that died in one hit, and the medium slimes that died in four, John noticed a large slime deeper into the forest. He stepped on a medium size slime and used it to propel himself upwards. Just as he was about to land onto the large slime, John pushed his shield under his feet and slammed it into the slime. The slime body bounced John back into a bunch of smaller slimes that cushioned his fall. However, it was not happy. Despite all that, John only did 1 damage, and if his calculations are correct, it would take roughly 16 hits to kill it. The slime jumped high into the air and tried to crush John with its heavy body. He blocked it with his shield, but despite taking no damage he still felt the force run through his body. John pushed it off, jumping out of the way as he did.

The slime bounced off the ground and tried to crush him again, but John moved out of the way and whacked it with his shield.

14.

The slime turned towards him and lunged at the shielded target, but John jumped behind a tree and smacked it with his shield again

13.

The slime jumped around the tree and attempted to crush him, but was once again blocked by John and hit in the face. While it was recovering, John used this chance to punch it a few more times.

7.

The slime finally recovered and lunged forwards, pushing John into an opening. He smacked some random slimes around him and quickly collected their exp, watching his gauge fill up again. His level increased to three.

Finally!

He equipped the shield he got from the blacksmith that gave him an attack bonus, and lunged towards the slimy abomination. With this new shield he now dealt double the damage.

*Smack*

5.

The slime jumped back in surprise at the opponent's strength and attempted to flee, but John ran towards it and smacked it again. It tried to jump away but got another smack. And with it's last health point it looked at John as the shield hero switched his shield back to his default one.

"ORA!" he yelled as he punched the slime in the face. It's body split open and turned into four medium size slimes, as well as dropping some decent exp. As he began to kill the medium slimes, the amount of the slimes began to increase and slowly overwhelm him. The slimes clinged onto his body and slowly but surely began to weigh him down, the sound of the bouncing slimes filled his ears and before he realized what happened, he was completely covered in slimes.

A slicing sound rang out and he was suddenly freed from his prison by Myne, who was staying behind until now.

"Thanks. Wow. I did not think I would be at risk of dying to slimes today," he sighed, crushing the remaining slimes. The amount

"Please be more careful, and don't be afraid to call out for me. I'm always here to help you, you know," Myne smiled, slashing a nearby slime. The two of them continued to take down slimes until the day began to fade, with his level eventually reaching 13. While Mine was collecting the slimeballs, John tried to whack an oak tree with his shield. To his surprise, the blockly stem began to crack just like in the game. He quickly punched the middle block, but unlike the game, the top part of the tree crashed down onto the bottom. It didn't fall, so John continued breaking the top part and slowly made his way down. This got him 6 logs, five saplings, two sticks, and even an apple. He also picked up a dirt block and put it in his inventory, and then quickly made his way back to Myne and helped her collect the remaining slimeballs.

"Wow, we got quite a lot today."

"Yeah. I also got so many slimeballs from that grinding session," John replied. looking at what was now a little over two stacks in his inventory.

"Should we try absorbing it into the shield to see what it will do?" she suggested. John nodded and took some of her slimeballs into the shield. The shield began to glow just like that time from the royal dinner and a new message popped up in his status.

[Requirements for the Small Green Slime Shield have been met]

[Small Green Slime Shield]

Abilities Unmastered:

Equip Effect: Jump Boost 10%

Defense: 1

"Huh."

Are there other types of slimes in this world?

John equipped the new shield, which just looked like a round green circle with a lime green gem in the middle, and jumped up. The boost wasn't too noticeable, but it was definitely there.

Would there be a difference if I absorb a slime block? I'll have to try it out later.}

"Amazing. So this is the power of the legendary weapons."

"Yeah. Apparently we can absorb just about anything and get a weapon form based on its properties. Nice! I wonder what kind of powers you can get from rarer materials!" John said, continuing to jump up and down for a bit more.

"We should return to the weapons shop and get better equipment so that we can go further tomorrow," Myne suggested.

"True, and I would like to take a better look at some of those shields he had. Let's go!" John answered, excitedly walking back to town with his new shield equipped since his base shield was fully mastered and his base defense was now 12 instead of 10.

They arrived at the shop and Myne instantly began to look through the armors. John walked over to the blacksmith and pulled out a few slime balls.

"Hey, do you know where we can sell these?" John asked.

"Hey to you too. The shop down the street will buy these from you. But they're not worth much, a copper at most," the blacksmith replied. John put the balls back into his inventory, but to the man it looked like he just made them disappear into thin air.

"Whoa! How did you do that?" he asked, putting his hand where the slime balls just were. His hand phased through John's player inventory and status screen that only John could see.

"Magic. For my next trick I'll make this stick appear!" John replied, pulling a stick from his inventory, much to the blacksmith's surprise.

"Wow. Anyways, what can I help you with now?" he asked, ignoring the stick.

"Well, we would like to upgrade our equipment. I managed to reach level 13, so here is the armor back. And whatever she's getting," John replied, putting the chainmail chestplate and pants onto the counter. The blacksmith took it and put 65 silver on the counter. John took it and began to look at the other armor options.

"Hey, uh…. what is your name again?" John asked.

"RIght, I never introduced myself. The name's Erhard," the blacksmith introduced himself.

"Right, Erhard," John looked at the full set of iron armor in front of him.

[Iron Armor]

Defense: 15

"Is there a way to upgrade armor in this world?" he asked, poking the set of armor in front of him.

"Well, yeah. I use iron as the base armor. Then add the materials of your choosing into the armor to increase its effects and stats. The more you bring, the better the result may be. But you can just buy the normal iron armor if you want, and I can upgrade it later," Erhard explained, pointing to the wall of different armor sets. John looked them over and saw that they resembled the normal armor, but fused with different materials. He even found a pair of boots fused with slimeballs.

[Slimy Iron Boots]

Defense: 3

Special Effect: Jump boost 5%

"Neat," John muttered to himself and looked at Erhard. "How much for the normal boots?"

"32 Silver."

"And these slime boots?"

"34 Silver."

"What if I buy normal boots and supply you with materials?"

"Heh, I'll knock off a silver. But they won't be ready until tomorrow morning," Erhard replied.

"Fine by me. Here you go," John handed the man 33 silver pieces and a few slimeballs. Erhard quickly took them, wrapping the slime in a towel of sorts. John began to look around the shop's armor section. This place seemed to have everything, ranging from fire resistance type armors, to wooden reinforced armor. He took a look around and found an expensive looking blue and green helmet.

[Water Walker Helmet]

Wow, fancy.

Defense: 62

Special Effect: Water Defense 3, Water Breathing, Water Speed 6

"Holy sh*t, it's so strong!" John muttered to himself. "Must be very expensive with all those effects."

"That one is almost worth its weight in gold. But even with the money you still won't be able to use it at your level," Erhard called out to John.

"Ah, got it. Say, where's the shield section?"

"Why so curious? Not planning to run away with them are ya?"

"Pft, you take me for some sort of scoundrel! I'm almost insulted. I would never try to rip off such a nice guy like you."

Technically I'm not taking your merch by copying the shields, so I'm not lying? He ain't losing anything if I do this, and it contributes to the world, so I'll say it's ok?"

"I'm the shield hero. And I just want to see all the possible shields I might unlock in the future," John replied with a bit of guilt.

"Well I don't actually have that many shields. There are some here and a few more behind the armor section," Erhard replied, pointing John into the direction of the shields. John looked over at them and was surprised by what he saw. There were only a few shields, but they looked unique and cool.

"Wow. Some of these look pretty sick!" John continued to mutter, picking up each of them one by one and eyeing his status.

Wow! I'm so glad I went here. I basically just got 8 shields for free! I mastered 2 out of 27 shields, so only 25 more shields to master. I should also try crafting a few items to absorb to see what I get.

John's through process was interrupted when Myne dropped a set of armor onto the counter. The set looked pretty expensive, possibly over their budget. It was a chestplate, leggings and boots reinforced with blaze rods, giving it a defense and fire resistant buffs.

"Um, how much is that?"

"352 silver without the helmet."

"And with a discount to the heroes for the sake of the world?" John asked, half jokingly.

"330, and not a copper less," Erhard replied.

"Alright, deal!" John replied, pulling out the money from his coin pouch.

"Oh, do you know where and when the wave will hit? I want to prepare later," he asked, counting 330 silver and handing it to Erhard.

"You mean you guys weren't informed yet? The weapons have to be connected to the church's beacon. It won't show you where it will happen, but it will give you the time you have until the wave."

Beacons have a use in this world other than boosting nearby users? Epic!

"Thanks! I'll check out the church tomorrow then. Or maybe today with the other heroes," John said excitedly as Myne disappeared with the new armor.

She reappeared a few minutes later in her new armor and led John to a nearby tavern where they ordered some food and pulled out a map.

"So this is where we were today," Myne said, pointing to the location on the map, "The Raffan village is just beyond this forest. We should go there tomorrow."

"Hm, alright. And we should be able to find some useful monster materials in the forest for my shield," John agreed, watching as the [Green Slime Shield] finished mastering. He switched to the [Small Spikey Copper Shield] and moved it to his leg so that it wouldn't get in the way.

"There is also a beginners dungeon nearby. It won't give many rewards, but it will help you raise your level quickly, allowing you to use better equipment."

"And better shields too!" John agreed, stuffing his mouth with the steak on his plate. There was a bottle of some red liquid to the side that he completely ignored.

"Won't you try your wine?" Myne asked, pointing to the bottle.

"I tried wine before and gotta say, not really a fan. Vodka is better."

"What's vodka?"

John paused.

"Oh dang, this world doesn't have vodka. What a shame. Oh well," he grabbed the wine and poured it into his shield. It unlocked something, but apparently John didn't have the necessary shields unlocked to use it.

"Well that's a bit concerning. Oh well."

He noticed that Myne looked almost disappointed for a second. But before he could say anything, Motoyasu caught his eye. He looked a bit concerned and confused, while still smiling and talking to his companions.

"I'm gonna go share some info with the other heroes."

"Alright sir hero. I'll go rent two rooms at the inn," Myne said and left the table. John quickly made his way to Motoyasu and waved his shield over to him. It took a few seconds before Motoyasu finally turned his eyes towards the shield. John stopped waving and pointed to a table where Itsuki and Ren were already sitting. The spear hero nodded in response and excused himself.

"Hey guys, how's it hangin?" John asked, arriving at the table with Motoyasu.

"Horrible. Other than the weapons functionality, nothing in this world works like in my game. You start at level 0, your stats don't increase as you level up, you physically have to walk and pick up exp, your companions can apparently pick up exp from your kills, and so on."

"Yeah, I was wondering about it too. And everything around us other than people and items are cubical," Motoyasu nodded.

"Agreed. The only use for exp is the unlocking requirements for weapon forms and equipment," Ren chimed in.

"Well, that's just how things are in Minecraft," John shrugged, "you'll get used to it eventually."

The three heroes turned to John and looked at his shield.

"Say, what do you know about Minecraft?" Motoyasu asked.

"Well, pretty much everything. There are a few differences though. There are no floating trees, cause physics, and the defense works differently. And these weapons are completely different from what I'm used to. But I suppose everything else is roughly the same."

"We aren't familiar with your game Miencraft, so could you fill us in?" Itsuki questioned. John looked around and then back at the heroes.

"Ask me anything!" John exclaimed, standing up straight. The heroes looked in between themselves. Ren was the first to speak.

"How do you get stronger if you can't gain stats by leveling?"

"Well, you would gather materials to make better equipment. Different tiers for armor are leather, chainmail, gold, iron, diamonds and netherite, though there could be copper and a few others in this world. I also found out that you can upgrade iron armor at any blacksmith shop by adding different items or materials into the mix."

"And what else are levels used for?" Motoyasu continued the conversation.

"Well normally there aren't level requirements for equipment, and instead you can sacrifice levels to enchant your equipment. For example, you can have a helmet that gives you a bit of extra air for underwater travel, or boots that freeze water under your feet. The weapons also have interesting enchants, but sadly the shield only has Unbreaking and Mending, both of which are useless for me since the weapons don't have durability."

"Sucks to be you I guess. But where did you get that shield?" Itsuki pointed to the [Small Spiky Copper Shield] John had equipped.

"Ah, that's something I just found out today. I tried to dual wield a spiky shield with my defensive one and it turns out you can copy similar weapons. So I got a few strong shields for free!" John replied.

"You just have to hold them?!" Itsuki exclaimed.

"Yep. You didn't know about that?" Motoyasu asked. Ren didn't seem surprised either.

"Also, to get the timer until the Melromarc wave we need to register at the beacon. So I was wondering if you guys wanna go register together right now and get a breath of fresh night air?" John suggested, but Motoyasu shook his head.

"I'm going to call it a day. I was actually planning to register a bit later."

"Same," Ren added.

"I heard that monsters are more active during the night, so it wouldn't be wise to run around unprepared," Itsuki added.

"True, the monsters spawn in dark areas, so the night time is basically the worst time, unless you have good gear. Though I'm pretty sure the capital is lit well enough to avoid that. But alright, I'll just go in the morning by myself then," John shrugged, "you guys wanna know anything else before I hit the hay?"

"Nah, we'll ask you tomorrow on the way to the beacon. I'm out," Ren replied, walking up the stairs to the inn. John walked up to Myne who got two keys to the rooms she rented and took one.

"Well, good night Myne. And… thank you for joining my party."

"No problem sir hero. Good night," she replied and walked off.

John walked back into the room and looked at the room. It had a table, a chair, a clauset and a bed. Nothing too special but still pretty cozy. It also had a lamp on the ceiling that couldn't be turned off.

Ah, minecraft logic. Need a light in the room for monsters not to spawn. Oh well, good thing I can fall asleep pretty much anywhere.

John walked up to the table and put all of his non-food related items on the table.

2 sticks, 5 oac saplings, 1 dirt block, 6 oac logs and a little over 2 stacks of slimeballs.

John threw the piece of dirt into his shield and watched as a third tree opened.

He turned two planks into four sticks and looked through the options.

Some tools would be nice, but I wonder if I can absorb those as well?

John crafted a wooden pickaxe for testing and absorbed it.

John looked at the last shield and equipped it. As the stats showed, his attack didn't rise at all.

Well dang. I was banking on this shield to give me some offense, but I guess it's only spikes. But this is still great! I now have tools I can use without filling up space in my inventory! And by the looks of it, they will never break! Tomorrow I should find myself a cave, or perhaps get some cobblestone in the dungeon. I will need to stock up on a lot of wood though, so that I have more materials for crafting.

*Yawn*

But I guess that can wait until tomorrow.

John took off his clothes and threw it into his inventory along with his money, and equipped the [Small Spiky Copper Shield] to finish mastering it, before finally laying down in bed.
