Before And After

Chapter 12-Sorrow Songs

The Final Chapter of the Season 2 arc. Prue and Andy must battle their greatest fight yet when Prue is taken by one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse forcing Andy to consider life on a bigger scale. Prue meanwhile is stuck in the astral plane when she gets a visitor, and she realises just what everything has been leading too.

Spending time with her sisters was nice. Prue who could remember a time when she and Phoebe were not speaking and Piper was tiptoeing around everything. Phoebe was right—there was something to be said for those pesky demons, they really had brought them all together.

Andy was in court. His company had been allowed access to help the PD with the intense workload. He had come home pensive when they had been given permission because as he told Prue it was a sign that the PD was struggling significantly and that did not play down in the press.

"I mean!" he said that night over beer and bear claws (Daryl had been round almost apoplectic) "We've managed riots and parades, escaped prisoners—demons—all sorts—"

Here Daryl had pulled a face and then pulled apart a chocolate pastry with vigour.

"It's just mad" he said looking exhausted. "It's just…it's like all the holidays into one—we are about five calls away from being placed under tactical alert and then we'll have the National Guard in and that is just the last thing we need, private companies, the guard, the PD. I mean it's just a recipe for a load of miscommunication and fuck ups quite frankly"

Prue had left them too it. She had not wanted to tell Andy that she had booked a hospital appointment with her doctor. She did not want him to find out that the sickness had continued and she certainly did not want to tell him what she thought it was.

She had not realised until the night after they had given Charlene the much needed peace that she deserved, when they had gotten home she had gone through her date book to move her photo shoot to the next week. She had felt like she had needed it and more to the point she had felt like she had been so sick lately that a week of rest and relaxation was exactly what she needed.

She had been debating weather or not it would be worth trying to find a nice little place outside of the city and spending a week there preferably with Andy and a masseuse but she thought that it would be typical—she would go and then they would need the Power of Three.

It was only as she was debating this that she saw it. The little red circle.

She was late.

Her period was late.

Flipping back a couple of weeks Prue saw that she had been late for the last one as well. All in all that would make two that she had missed. Eight weeks.

She had tried not to panic. With all the demons that she had been fighting, the trauma and the stress and the panic that came with them not to mention the injuries that were often sustained she thought that she was surprised that there had not been more wear and tear on her body. That being said what she was surprised at was the fact that she was this late. Since she was fourteen her period had come naturally and always on time. She had been religious in her use of tampons and she always had it down to a complete t.

So how had she not noticed that she was eight weeks late?

She had thought about it as Andy had gone to sleep. She had curled up next to him thinking hard and she had thought about what had happened.

It was not hard to miss what eight weeks of no period could mean.

It was just that would mean that she was…

That she was…

And that wasn't a possibility. Prue had been religious in her use of contraception since she was seventeen. She'd never even so much as had a pregnancy scare before—unlike Phoebe who she knew had, had two. Even though she and Andy had stopped using other kinds of protection when he had moved in—after all it wasn't like they were going to sleep with anyone else was it?, she had still kept on the pill and as far as she knew she had taken it religiously except..

It was three in the morning when this thought had come to her.

The one time she had skipped a day (that she could remember) was that time Piper had been in the hospital. They had been under the influence of the Awakening spell and they had fucked like rabbits (now was not a time to be polite about it) and then they had been at the hospital for hours trying to fix the mess that they had made. She remembered it clearly now that she was thinking over every detail. She had not had the chance to grab the pill between the government people arriving and coming back. Indeed she had not taken it until two days afterwards due to the sheer exhaustion that was the spell's major side effects.

But surely…surely…

That morning she had gone into the bathroom before Andy had woken up and pulled up her shirt so that she could see her belly. It was pointless. Even if she was pregnant which she was sure that she was not she was certain that her body would not recognise it yet. Even if witches pregnancies were different from the average mortal and holy hell what if they were?

Before she could get panicked over that thought she had tried to look on the bright side. Her stomach was still flat and smooth and there was no hardness to it or at least that was what she could feel. Maybe a tightening of the muscles perhaps but surely that was due to the kickboxing that she and Phoebe did twice a week as well as the crunches that she had been doing. Her stomach had always been flat. Now she had abs forming. That was what it had to be surely? Nothing else.

That was how she had left it for a week as it seemed the world—or at the least the city was falling down around them and then she had decided to bite the bullet. She had gone to the drugs store and looked at the pregnancy tests and she had bought one but she had still booked a doctor's appointment. She had no idea what she was going to do and to be honest as she sat at the Paula Cole's show with Andy listening to the peaceful music she thought that it was a nice distraction if a demon was behind all this carnage in the city like Piper thought it was. It was almost worth running in without a second glance at the danger ahead even if it was against Leo's advice.

It was until she was sucked into what felt like a vice squeezing her downwards. She wasn't even aware that the arm of the bastard with his hands around his neck was loosening it until she fell and hit something solid and then it all (as cliché as it sounded) went black.

"So let me get this straight you two did exactly what Leo told you not to do and now Prue's missing!"

Andy was furious. He had not had what one would call the best day. Daryl was now convinced they were going to have to be placed on tactical alert and that had meant mounds of paperwork for both of them. He had gone down to see his old partner and had nearly being kicked into his desk by a perp screaming obscenities and that had resulted in a brawl kicking off he'd had to stay behind and help put out.

"Admit it" Daryl had said wiping sweat of his brow with a worn out grin.

"There's a part of you that misses this?"

There was but Andy wasn't going to admit it. Besides there were many other things about the job that he decidedly did not miss.

He had come home at night to see the sisters in complete disarray. It had not taken long to get the full story out of them. Prue was missing—they had not bothered to call—but they were sure that she was alive, something was jamming Leo's blockers when it came to sensing her but he was also sure that she wasn't dead but Evil wanted the Charmed One's help and the Charmed One's were going to help regardless of weather or not Leo thought it was a good idea. Demons had been stalking the house and Leo had gone off in a huff.

All in all it was a shit day gotten worse and now he was furious.

"I know" Piper had said. "You don't have to make us feel any more bad about it Andy than we already do. We know this thing is our fault we just…"

"Just got fucking complacent" he muttered under his breath pacing.

"Are you sure she's alive?"

"We felt her" Phoebe said quietly. "It's like she's…she's on another plane, the astral one"

Andy was suddenly struck by a terrible thought.

"Is that the same as the place she went when she was dead—to fight the ghost?"

"No" Phoebe said shaking her head. "No that's different, this is another place but…but we need to get her out of there and the only way we can do that is if we work together—besides, as far as demons go these three are easier to work with"

Andy sat down and rubbed his hands over his face.

"When all of this is over Prue and I are going on a long vacation, and if any of you even think about so much as calling I will hunt you down and make demons look like child's play"

He knew without seeing that the sisters shared a look between them and then Phoebe shrugged.

"Fair enough"

Andy snorted it was a dick move he knew but it made him feel better.

Leo chose that moment to arrive.

"Where the hell have you been? And why are you in a suit?"

Andy looked up. Leo who lived in jeans and a jumper nine times out of ten was in a suit this time and looking very uncomfortable about it.

And it wasn't even a nice suit either.

But that was how they leant about the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

Which was apparently a thing.

Andy had always said that he was sure that nothing would surprise him but the truth of the matter was he had a feeling that it would and that things would continue to do just that.

"Didn't dodging the whole Y2K thing give us some breathing room on that?"

Leo explained that the Mayans had gotten it wrong. Well that had seen a lot of panicked people by air raid shelters for nothing Andy thought glumly.

He was pulled out of his thoughts to see them both arguing with Leo about saving Prue.

"You're the Charmed One's, you have a responsibility"

"Yeah to our sister"

"We save her" Andy said finally. It cut through all arguments. "I get where you're coming from Leo but we save her. It doesn't matter what happens after that. We have to save her."

"Regardless of what comes next, of war and death and disease and famine and strife and the rest of it"

Andy didn't have to think about it. Not really. To him the answer was obvious.

"Yes"

They had gone off the sisters to do…well…whatever had to be done and Leo looked at Andy. He didn't know how to impress upon anyone or everyone that this was such a bad idea.

"I want to show you what there planning"

"Why does it matter?" Andy asked turning to face him. "It clearly didn't stop them"

"I don't mean the sisters, I mean you. I don't want you…I need you to understand what happens next"

"War, famine, death, strife, you explained it pretty well"

"Hundreds and thousands of people will suffer for this decision made tonight"

Andy looked at him.

"If it was Piper would this be a discussion?"

"I…it would break me…it would utterly destroy me but I would have to choose the millions of people who have a normal life out there that will be ruined rather than the woman that I love because, because I would want her to do the same for me. I wouldn't want all of that, on my conscious. I wouldn't want to save her only to lose her afterwards. And yes it would kill me, it would break me into pieces and I would never be the same again but I would know that the greater good was—"

"That's all you people talk about, the greater good. You can't have it both ways Leo. The elders either want a greater good or they want the Charmed Ones. They either want them to be with the people who they love or they risk pushing them into open rebellion. What happens if Prue dies…then they still win? This way we've got a fighting chance"

"No this way you get Prue back and damn the consequences"

Andy thought about it. He thought about Daryl's kids and his friends and he thought about the last time that they had been selfish. It had nearly cost them everything. It had nearly cost them Piper. But they had been at risk then too, constantly at risk and hoping that each day was a blessing that they could be together. He didn't want that.

"You got any idea when this is going to stop?" he asked honestly. "Or do we just keep fighting evil until we are all dead"

Leo shrugged. Andy thought he looked exhausted too.

"It's got to end at some point" he said. "And I…at least you can grow old"

Andy had not thought about that.

"I suppose that's a point" he said finally.

"Andy—"

"I know it's selfish Leo. I know it's the most selfish thing that any of us will ever do but unless they throw us another miracle I don't see what else there is to do. You give me a way we get out of this with our lives without being selfish and I'll let you take me to the sister's right now and I'll get them to stop."

Leo sighed.

He said nothing.

But Andy thought that he understood.

Prue had been walking around the astral plane for a bit. It was red mostly. She'd managed to get a message through her astral projection (she was not sure how) to Phoebe and she had managed to hide from the man/demon that she was sure was after her. Now she was sat on a red rock watching a red river that she hoped was just normal here and not full of blood and wondering just what the hell was going to happen when…

"Hi Mom"

She nearly fell of her rock. She turned around though her body felt…odd…it was not really attached she thought. It was there when she looked down but it was almost like she was looking at it but not feeling it.

Or as Andy would say like she was coming down from a monster hangover.

But she was pretty sure that was not it.

She turned and stared. Leaning against a red tree with an expression of pure smugness (and that was so Andy wasn't it?) was Peter.

She remembered him from the future and as she saw him grin her hands found her belly.

"Yeah" Peter said grinning. "Your expecting me"

"Oh god"

"Not an unprecedented reaction."

"Peter"

"Sorry Mom"

Prue groaned. Already she was getting into the swing of motherhood.

"Will I…will we…live through…

"What this? Yeah sure. And through all the other demons. Just make sure Dad doesn't go totally over the top"

Prue grinned her eyes wet with tears.

"It's alright Mom" Peter said grinning. "It's all gonna be ok. Cause even when I'm not here—" he pointed to her stomach. "I'm here" his pointed her heart.

Prue was about to say something but then she saw him. The demon.

"Go!" she shouted at her son and Peter flashed her a wink, gave a mock salute and then took a step backwards and immediately was swallowed up by the red smoke that was billowing all around them. Prue turned but then before she could do anything—and she did not have powers here either which was just a huge kick in the teeth, she felt that pull that suggested that she was being dragged downwards and she gasped scrambling up until she was thrown into fresh clean air and the waiting arms of her sisters.

She had no idea what had happened but she just knew that she wanted to go to Andy. She wanted to see him.

She had to tell him that she was pregnant.

That night as they got ready for bed Prue came and sat next to him.

"I saw Peter in the astral plane" she said quietly.

"As in future son Peter?"

"Yeah. And…and he told me something"

"Oh" Andy said. "Was it that I was being selfish when it came to sacrificing the world rather than you?"

"No" Prue said with a small smile. "And you'd have never have really gone through with it"

"Don't count on it" Andy muttered. "This one scared me"

Prue said nothing, this one scared her as well.

"Wish I could have seen him" Andy said quietly.

Prue took a deep breath.

It was now or never.

"Well you will"

"Soon?"

"Yeah?"

Andy looked at her. "How do you know?"

"I just…your going to have to wait but I know"

"How—how long?"

"About seven months give or take"

There was a pause and she knew that Andy was working it out in his head.

And she knew that he had gotten it when he reared backwards to look at her.

"Really?"

"Yeah. Oh yeah, I checked, twice"

Andy blinked and then before Prue could ask if he was happy his whole face split into a grin and his mouth came down on hers and he was kissing her.

"Wow" he said once they had to pull back to breathe.

"A baby"

"Yeah"

He laughed and Prue laughed too feeling utterly infected with joy. It didn't matter what happened, today or tomorrow and they would have to tell Piper and Phoebe tomorrow. It did not matter because right now they were safe in their own little bubble of happiness. Prue, Andy and their baby.

And they carried on in this perfect moment of joy, for the rest of the night.

And there you go, I hope you enjoy this chapter and I will hopefully bring you the next one sooner rather than later.

Next Chapter-Season 3 begins-Piper is fighting for the love of her life, Phoebe meets the love of her life and Prue is pregnant. Andy and Daryl feel as if they are just along for the ride.
