When you're a spy, you don't ever think about having a family. You don't consider meeting someone that you can get married to, and you don't imagine bringing a child into the wonderful world of espionage. It's not an environment that you should force on anyone that isn't aware of what they were getting into. That's not to say that fate doesn't get in the way of that.

"Michael?" She whispered as she turned to face me. Suddenly, I felt like a trapped animal, fear clawing at the back of my throat and my heart hammering in my chest. She took a step closer, and I instinctively curled myself inward before collapsing onto the floor and pressing my back against the underside of the upended workbench, my knees pulled up my chest.

"Does my son scare you?" Fi and Madeline have a little chat over beers while waiting for Michael to join them for dinner.

She'd heard the stories. Between Maddie and Michael, she was still sure she hadn't heard them all, but she'd heard enough to know that he'd always looked out for his family. Then he'd looked out for Sam. For Jesse. For her. Who was going to look out for Michael? She knew that she couldn't watch his soul clatter to the floor, forgotten like spent rounds.

Fiona prodded Sam, saying, "You've jumped in to help total strangers. Isn't it time you did something for your family?" Michael, Fiona, and Sam go to Michigan to help save Sam's relatives' farm from a shady corporation, and they find even more challenges await them.

My chest physically ached. It had every minute since she'd walked out the door, which had been one week, six days, and twenty-three hours. Was it pathetic that I had kept such an acurate account of how long ago she'd walked out? Probably. But, I supposed that it was like being like an alcoholic. I had almost survived the first two weeks post-Fiona.

Valentine's Day had never been something I was good at. Emotions? Not really my forte.
