Maggie wasn't lying there for very long when she heard the door open and Lucy call out to her. She went out to find Lucy lugging in two large bags of ice.

"I've got more in the car," Lucy said.

"Bring it up," Maggie said. "Eliza said we should put Alex in an ice bath."

"Where is Alex? And Eliza?"

"Alex is sleeping. Eliza returned to the DEO to pick up some things," Maggie said.

"Ok, I'll go get the other bags."

Maggie brought the ice into the bathroom and poured it into the tub and began running the water. When Lucy returned with two more bags, Maggie poured one more in the tub and told Lucy to put the other in the freezer in case they needed it later.

"Are we going to wake her up first?" Lucy asked as they were both now standing next to the bed looking down at Alex who hadn't moved an inch.

"Yes. I don't want to shock her system too much by putting her in there while she is unconscious," she said. "I'll wake her. But here, take this, just in case." She handed Lucy the tranquilizer gun which elicited a curious look from her.

"Just be prepared to use it if she gets aggressive again."

Maggie leaned over and shook Alex while saying her name. It took a few rough shakes before Alex opened her eyes. At least they were clear from the red Kryptonite, Maggie thought.

"Sorry for waking you, but we need to get you into an ice bath."

"What?"

"Your temperature has gotten too high," Maggie explained. "We need to do something to bring it down."

"An ice bath would be a temporary measure at most," Alex said. "Don't bother."

"Please. Even if it is a temporary measure, I would feel better if we did something," Maggie said. "For me, please let us do this."

Alex looked from Maggie then to Lucy, seeing that she was carrying the tranquilizer gun.

"Ok," Alex said. "But I don't need babysitters to take a bath."

"Fair enough," Maggie said, stepping back from the bed.

Alex got up from the bed, keeping an eye on both Maggie and Lucy as if she expected them to do something. She walked into the bathroom and closed the door behind her.

"Well that went alright all things considered," Lucy said.

"She doesn't trust me," Maggie said.

"She doesn't trust anyone right now."

"I know. I guess I just hoped that I would be the exception," she said. "Stupid I know."

"It's not stupid," Lucy said. "I know things didn't go well there in the end with you two, but I don't think Alex ever stopped loving you."

"So, people keep telling me," Maggie said. "I just wish that Alex would tell me that."

Alex stepped into her bathroom still feeling tired. Ever since she was captured at the train yard it was like her energy level was only high when the Kryptonite was working in her system. She recognized the signs of it coming on better now than she had when it first started working on her.

She was quick to anger – she knew that.

And she also knew that it would get worse before it got better.

That is why she had wanted to be alone.

Having Maggie here was not ideal because of all people Maggie was the one she couldn't control her emotions around. She never could.

She looked down at the ice in the tub. Her mom's idea she was sure. It wasn't a bad idea on her part. Without knowing what was going on inside her for sure, her mom was probably fearful of trying anything else, so she went with a simple ice bath.

Still wearing shorts and a T-shirt, she decided to keep them on as she stepped into the bath. The cold hit her immediately – even with her temperature, the cold was penetrating. Knowing there was no reason to prolong it, she sat down quickly – immersing herself in the cold.

While athletes were known to use ice baths, they usually were monitored to make sure they only spent a short amount of time in them. It was dangerous to stay in one too long. She was a little surprised her mom wasn't there with a stopwatch to make sure she wasn't in it any longer than eight minutes.

She leaned her head back figuring her mom probably was out there timing her. She let her eyes close, still feeling worn out.

Maggie was pacing while she kept looking at the time on her phone.

"It's been too quiet in there," Maggie said.

"Then go check on her," Lucy said.

"I don't want to set her off again."

"Well, her time should be about up," Lucy said. "Just knock on the door and ask her how she is doing."

Maggie debated it a moment in her mind and then went up to the door and knocked. "Everything ok in there?"

No response.

"Alex?" she said this time, knocking a little louder.

Again, no response.

Maggie looked back at Lucy, who said, "open it." Maggie slowly opened it and then rushed in, "Alex!" Lucy also rushed to the doorway to see Maggie kneeling next to the bath shaking an unconscious Alex.

"Alex!" Maggie said, shaking her still.

Alex gasped as she came awake.

"Are you ok?" Maggie asked.

"What?" Alex said and looked from Maggie to the ice bath as if she was trying to figure out what was going on. "I'm fine. I'm fine"

"You were unconscious."

"I just fell asleep is all," Alex said.

"Come on, let's get you out of there," Maggie said, and she offered Alex a hand, but Alex ignored it and Maggie stepped back. Alex got up on her own and Lucy handed her a towel before giving Maggie a look and leaving to give them some privacy.

Alex wrapped the towel around her body, and Maggie noticed she wasn't even shivering. She wanted to check Alex's temperature, but it seemed like Alex wasn't being very receptive to her once more.

Alex walked out to her room, and Maggie followed her, hoping against hope that anything she said would make a difference to Alex. She tried to remind herself that this was the kryptonite that was making Alex be this way but couldn't help but wonder how much of it was the way Alex felt about her now.

"I could use some privacy," Alex said. "To change clothes."

"Yeah, sure," Maggie said, moving toward the door.

"I just meant turn around, you don't have to leave unless you want to," Alex said.

"Oh, ok," Maggie said, and she stood still, feeling a little foolish. After all, there was no part of Alex she hadn't seen before. She could hear Alex removing her clothes and Maggie thought time was dragging by.

In what felt like an eternity, Alex finally told her that she could turn around.

"How are you feeling?" Maggie asked.

She was surprised when Alex sat on the edge of her bed and was quiet for a moment.

"I … I needed to do this," she said. "I had to do this."

Maggie came over and sat beside her. "I'm not sure I understand all of this," she said. "But I know one thing – I can't lose you, not again."

Alex looked at her, "I knew this was probably a one-way trip."

"No, I don't accept that," Maggie said, standing up. "I don't. And I won't let you accept that either."

Alex bent over, her eyes focused on the floor in front of Maggie. She didn't say anything for a few moments. "I … my dad … he was dying but I still killed him. I deserve what's happening to me. I deserve it because … because I listened to her, listened to Lillian, and I thought about what she said, about my life and what it could have been if Kara hadn't have come into it. I listened."

Alex started to cry and Maggie knelt in front of her.

"Hey, hey it's ok," she said. "It's ok. You may have listened to her, but it's not like you believed what she had to say."

This only made Alex cry harder and Maggie was at a loss as to what to do. She hadn't seen Alex crying like this since the day her father took off after their reunion.

"I could have had a different life," Alex said, suddenly. "I could have grown up with my father. I could have …"

"No, no," Maggie interrupted her. "You wouldn't trade having Kara for a sister for anything. Look at what you are doing right now to save her life. You are risking your own life right now to ensure she is safe. You love her and she loves you and nothing Lillian Luther says or does will change that."

Maggie stood up and got Alex to move back up the bed and lay down. Maggie crawled in, hugging her from behind as she continued to weep.

….

Maggie came out of the bedroom after Alex fell asleep. Lucy was still there, but sitting on the couch on her phone.

"How is she?" Lucy asked, putting her phone down.

"Sleeping," Maggie responded, taking a seat on the couch. They were both silent for a few moments.

"Is the going to be alright? I mean after all of this," Lucy asked.

"I don't know," Maggie said. "I really don't. This is what I feared when I broke things off with her, that Cadmus would destroy her, or she would destroy herself in this obsession with Cadmus and Lillian Luther. I just didn't consider that she could actually die."

"She's not going to die," Lucy said.

"You don't know that," Maggie said, looking at her. "You know what she said in there, she said she knew this was a one-way trip for her. She knew that and yet she took some experimental cure anyway. She didn't care enough about her own life."

"She did what she did to save Kara," Lucy.

"That doesn't give her the right to throw away her own life," Maggie said, her voice rising. "How does she think Kara is going to feel if she dies, what about her mother, what about …"

"What about you," Lucy finished for her.

"Here's the thing, I don't even know if I belong here," Maggie said.

"Of course, you do," Lucy said. "If you weren't helping us find Alex, we probably wouldn't have found her. You love her and she loves you."

"Then why do I keep going back to this idea that if she did, she would have listened to me when I begged her to stop this," Maggie said. "I didn't want to walk out of here that night, but she left me no choice. I just wanted her to see that she was going too far. Now she has taken it about as far as she could go and for what?"

"She's going to save a lot of lives," Lucy said.

"She might save a lot of lives," Maggie responded. "We don't even know if this fake kryptonite will cure the aliens. All we know is the last person who tried it died. I just … I don't want her to die. I want her to be ok, and if she survives this, I'm going to kick her ass, and then I'm going to do whatever I need to do to have her back in my life."

"If it makes you feel better, I will help you kick her ass. I do owe her for causing a lockdown at my base," Lucy said.

"Deal," Maggie said.

Both were on their feet as the door opened and two men came in carrying equipment.

"What the he…"

"Just place it there on the floor," said Eliza as she came in behind them and directed them where to go.

"What's going on?" Maggie asked.

"Where is Alex?"

"Asleep. Now, what is going on?"

"I told you, I'm not going to lose my daughter," Eliza said. "And I meant it."

"What is all of this?"

"Dialysis equipment," Eliza said, kneeling to check the equipment. "I still need to modify it but I'm going to use it to filter out the kryptonite from her blood."

"But Alex specifically said we can't do that," Lucy said. "The cure isn't done whatever it is doing in her."

"I don't care," Eliza said. "I'm not going to stand aside while this kills my daughter."

"I don't think Alex is going to allow this to happen," Maggie said.

Eliza stood up and looked right at Maggie. "I'm not giving her a choice," she said. "I don't care if she hates me for the rest of her life because at least she will have a life to live."
