Maggie waited for Alex to wake up, trying to figure out what to say to her. After she was done with her ice bath, she had immediately gone to bed and had now been asleep for several hours, which Eliza said was probably because her body needed the rest.

But the sleep didn't seem very restful, as she was moving around in her sleep a lot. Maggie knew from experience that Alex didn't move around a lot in her sleep. Eliza had been monitoring her, and Maggie had suggested she just take the blood sample from her now while she was unconscious, but Eliza didn't want to risk waking her by taking such an action.

Kara had called while Alex was asleep to check on her, and Maggie spoke to her for a bit after Eliza had talked to her. Kara wasn't real forthcoming about how she herself was feeling but Maggie could tell from her voice that she was feeling the effects of Cadmus' plan. All Kara wanted to know about was Alex. She said a couple of times that she wanted to be there to check on her sister.

Maggie hoped when this was all over – if all went well – that Kara and Alex could get back to where they were before all of this. The bond they had as sisters was an important aspect of both of their lives and it was clear that Kara missed her sister. Maggie was certain Alex also missed her sister, but with the kryptonite in her system, she wasn't able to show that kind of emotion. Her negative emotions had been amplified and that was why Maggie was trying to be careful in how she approached Alex next. The more she thought about this, the more she believed that Alex was holding something back.

The question was how could she get Alex to tell her without flat out accusing her of lying?

She didn't tell Kara about her theory of Alex holding back on them as she didn't want to add to the stress that Kara was already feeling. Plus, it was possible that Maggie was being overly suspicious and Alex had told them everything.

Maggie stood in the doorway of the bedroom, watching Alex as she again moved around in the bed as if she couldn't find a spot that would truly let her rest.

Alex gasped in her sleep and woke.

"You ok?" Maggie asked coming toward the bed.

"Yeah," Alex said. She made no move to get up, just continued to lay there. Now or never, Maggie thought.

"Can we talk?" Maggie asked.

Alex raised her head a little bit examining Maggie. "Has Lillian announced the ships yet?"

"No."

"Damn it," Alex said. "What is she waiting on?"

"I don't know," Maggie said. "Maybe she changed her mind about her humanitarian mission. She's not my concern, you are."

"She may not be your concern, but she is mine," Alex said, lifting herself so she could lean against the headboard. Maggie noticed that even that short movement seemed to exhaust her and she looked as if she could go right back to sleep.

Maggie got closer to the bed and sat down as close as she could get to Alex. "I need you to be honest with me," she said.

"Is there something you think I lied about?" Alex asked.

Maggie could tell that it was a struggle for Alex to keep herself awake, so she decided to get straight to the point.

"I love you," she said. "The fact we aren't together any longer hasn't stopped how I feel about you. I love you, and I don't want to see this be the end of you. I'm worried that you are holding something back, something that is dangerous, so I'm asking you – have you told us everything that needs to be told about this?"

Alex looked away from her and Maggie thought that was more of an answer than anything Alex could say at this point.

"It's almost over that is all that matters," Alex said finally, and this time she looked at Maggie. "Lillian is going to pay for what she has done."

Maggie shook her head. "Don't do this. I'm trying here. I want to help you, but I can't if you aren't going to be honest with me. I know you are holding something back, just tell me what it is."

"Why can't you let me have this?" Alex said, and all the veins in her body seemed to flare up with the red. "Why are you trying to take this away from me?"

"I'm not trying to take anything away from you."

"But you are," Alex said and she started to cough.

"Eliza!" Maggie yelled when the coughing didn't stop.

Eliza came running in and got up on the bed to see if she could help her daughter. "Alex, try and take a breath," Eliza said. Maggie stood back and saw that while she was struggling, Alex was trying to take a breath and finally did. The coughing fit took whatever strength Alex had left and she slumped over into her mother's arms.

"Take it out," Maggie said. "I don't care what she says, what reservations you have about it, you take it out of her. She will let this kill her to get what she wants."

Kara looked at her sister from behind the glass partition that kept them separated. When Alex was brought back to the DEO, Kara was told she absolutely could not get close to her. Even though the kryptonite was removed from Alex and Eliza was able to synthesize a cure from it for her and the other aliens – Kara had been forbidden to enter the room where Alex lay sleeping.

Alex hadn't regained consciousness the entire time. And besides being forced from the room to rest, Maggie hadn't left Alex's side.

Eliza refused to allow anyone to try and wake Alex. She said her body had been put through the wringer and Alex needed to rest naturally.

Kara had spoken to Maggie who quite possibly was more depressed now than any of them. It wasn't just because Alex hadn't woken it was because Maggie was sure that when Alex did wake that Alex would not be happy with her. Maggie had told Eliza that she would take the full brunt of Alex's anger because it was Maggie's call, not Eliza's to remove the kryptonite. Eliza thanked her for that but told her that falling on the sword would not be necessary as Alex would know that it was Eliza, not Maggie who performed the procedure.

As for Kara, she was feeling completely fine now that she had been administered the cure. Some of the other aliens were still feeling lethargic but a couple of hours under the sunlamps and Kara was good to go. She only wished the same could be said for Alex. She understood the need for Alex to rest, but as the days lingered it made Kara more nervous. While Eliza assured her that Alex's body was merely recovering from its ordeal, Kara remained concerned.

Then there was the mystery none of them had an answer to – why did Alex say that the cure wasn't done inside of her when it clearly was?

That mystery not only had Maggie stumped, but it also made her angry. She had ranted to Kara after Eliza had forced Maggie to go home and rest. Her sister's ex was convinced that Alex knew the cure was done but that she was holding on for some unknown reason and the fact that it could have killed Alex was really what made Maggie mad.

Kara knew a part of that anger was just fear on Maggie's part – fear that Alex could have indeed died.

She just wanted to be able to put her arms around her sister, hug her, and never let go.

Kara backed up from the glass. She had been out of commission so Supergirl needed to get out there and patrol the city.

….

Maggie was tired, but she didn't want to leave Alex's bedside. She needed to see Alex open her eyes – even if was for the last time she would see her. She had no illusions that Alex would wake up and not be angry. Even with the kryptonite out of her system, she would be angry because they had done the one thing she had asked them not to do.

And Maggie was the one who had insisted upon it.

Alex wasn't likely to forgive her for doing that but as long as Alex was alive, Maggie would stand by her decision.

Alex had endangered her own life and Maggie still wasn't exactly sure why.

Maggie kept hold of Alex's hand but her ability to stay awake was fading fast.

That is how Eliza found Maggie – asleep with her head on the bed and her hand still holding onto Alex's. Eliza had come in to check on Alex and shook her head upon seeing Maggie asleep. She had had to kick Maggie out a couple of times already – ordering her to go home and sleep as she barely left Alex's bedside.

She could still remember the tone in which Maggie had yelled her name – it was full of fear – and Eliza too felt that fear when she first entered the bedroom and found Alex coughing. The red from the kryptonite was highlighting seemingly every vein in Alex's body and even when she fell unconscious it didn't fade like before. They had gotten Alex back to the DEO where Eliza was able to remove the kryptonite but the toll it had taken on Alex's body was why her daughter remained sleeping.

She knew the sleeping worried the others, but for Eliza, it gave her a measure of comfort to see Alex at peace.

Going over to the bed, she checked on Alex's vitals while debating with herself on whether to wake Maggie and at least make her go nap in one of the other beds in the medbay. She was concentrating on her task that she didn't notice when Alex opened her eyes.

Alex blinked several times before she fully kept her eyes open.

"Mom," she said just above a whisper but before Eliza could respond, Alex looked over at Maggie.

"She's been here practically the whole time. She didn't want to leave," Eliza said softly.

Alex looked back at her mother. "Did Lillian announce the ships?"

"No," Eliza said, confused as to why that would be what Alex would ask. "There was no need, Kara and the others are fine."

Alex closed her eyes a moment and Eliza thought maybe she fell back asleep until she opened them again.

"You took it out," she said. "Why?"

"Alex, whatever it was doing inside of you, it was done," Eliza said. "Did you not hear me say that Kara and others are ok? The cure worked. Your father's plan worked. His cure saved them."

Alex moved her hand from Maggie and used it to cover part of her face and Eliza realized she was crying. The movement caused Maggie to wake up and she saw Alex was crying and Eliza was standing there with an expression of sadness on her face.

"I did all of it for nothing," Alex cried.

"You sacrificed yourself for Kara and J'onn and all the others," Eliza said. "That isn't nothing."

"But without Lillian coming forward publicly, she'll get away with it," Alex said.

"That is why you were waiting," Maggie said. "You were waiting for Lillian to make the announcement about the ships."

"It was the only way to get the world to see her for what she really is," Alex said. "Once she made the announcement, and if the cure worked then … then she would be exposed to the world and there would be no place she could hide. Everyone would know who she really is and she'd have so much attention on her that even if she had allies to help her, they would shun her because of the attention she would bring down on them. She'd have no help. She'd lose everything. She'd finally pay for everything she has done. She'd pay for what she did to my father and what she did …"

"To you," Maggie interrupted. "What she did to you."

The two women stared at each other a moment and then Maggie turned and left the room.
