Maggie woke the next morning to an empty bed and an even more empty feeling. She had stayed up late trying to figure out what was going on, going through the apartment looking for anything that might give her some indication that this world was indeed a fabrication of either Alex or Evo.
She came up with nothing.
Everything was so strangely "real."
She still couldn't explain how she knew everything either. For instance, there was a bottle of wine on the top shelf in the kitchen. She knew it came from their honeymoon and they had bought it to save to drink on a later anniversary – after they were done doing some of those firsts they always talked about.
Did she know all of these things because it was Alex's or Evo's mind putting them in her mind?
Either way, she was still confused as to what she was supposed to be doing here.
One thing was for certain she needed more information.
Calling off of work, Maggie made her way to LutherCorp and asked to speak with Lena. She was somewhat surprised when she was let directly in.
"Hi Maggie," Lena said greeting her warmly. "What brings you here?"
"I was hoping I could ask you a question about something from a couple of years ago," Maggie said. "Specifically, the Evo situation."
"Sure, but why are you delving back into that?" Lena said.
"It will sound crazy if I tell you," Maggie said.
"Try me."
"Ok. Well let's start with how I don't believe any of this is real," Maggie said. "The situation with Evo wasn't two years ago, it's happening right now because what I know is that you helped put me in an electronic brain to separate Evo and Alex. The last thing I recall is you sedating me so this could happen and then I wake up yesterday in bed at Alex's place and it's supposedly two years later and we are married, which frankly I don't see us ever doing because she wants kids and I don't and while I have all this knowledge of things from the past two years if I think about it, I have no idea what specifically happened with Evo or that supposed aftermath. So what I believe is that I am still in that mind world, still on task to help Alex, but I have no idea what the hell I'm supposed to be doing and Alex won't even speak to me about it because I brought it up last night and instead of talking to me about it she left to spend the night or many nights at Kara's. That's pretty much it in a nutshell."
Lena looked at her just like Maggie expected her to – like she was crazy.
"I can assure you that Evo was two years ago," Lena said, getting up from her desk and approaching her. "And you and Alex are married. I know I was there at the wedding."
Maggie sighed, "I know you were there, I remember that for whatever reason. Look, can you just humor me for a little bit and answer some questions?"
Lena indicated she should take a seat on the couch and Lena did the same.
"Tell me what happened with Evo," Maggie said.
"I'm not sure how helpful I can be," Lena said. "I did sedate you as you said, and otherwise, it was just monitoring your and Alex's vitals and brainwaves. Then Evo's and Alex's brainwaves separated, and I pulled you both out. Whatever happened to you while you were in there, I don't know. It's not like you two came out and gave a full report of it. Once you both woke up, neither of you had much to say at all. I know Alex went through some pretty intensive therapy afterward – but I only know that because Kara mentioned it. She was concerned about Alex in the immediate aftermath and how she was processing everything. I'm not sure entirely how long it was afterward but it wasn't long and you and Alex started dating again and then you got married."
"What happened with Evo?"
"He was taken to another facility, where I don't know," Lena said. "They just wanted him out of there due to Alex."
Lena leaned forward a bit. "Have you been to a doctor recently?"
"No," Maggie said with hesitation. "Why?"
"Because I'm concerned that this memory loss could be an indication of something more serious," Lena said. "I could run some scans here in the lab on you if you are willing."
"It's not memory loss," Maggie said. "I'm telling you, this, this world here, it's not real. This is some manifestation of Evo's or Alex's although given how little I have been around Alex in the last day, I'm going to guess it's Evo. I need to figure this out though so that in the real world you actually can pull me and Alex out of this."
She then quickly told Lena what had happened since she had woken up the day before.
"Alright, let's say for argument's sake that what you are saying is true," Lena said. "What would be the point of making you believe that this is the real world and you are married to Alex?"
"I don't know. I mean Evo has this fascination with me and Alex so maybe this is just him playing out some sort of weird fantasy."
"Then why don't you play along with it. If this is Evo controlling what you are seeing and experiencing then play along with it to see if you can trip him up," Lena said.
"You think I should play house with him?"
"I'm not sure I would term it like that, but yes, immerse yourself in this environment so you can catch the flaws," Lena said. "But Maggie, you also need to be prepared for the realization that this world you don't believe is real, is real. That means coming to terms that there may be something neurological going on in that brain of yours."
"If there is, I'll come back for those scans," she said. "In the meantime thanks for the counsel."
"You're welcome. You know you are welcome to stop by anytime," Lena said. "You know how important you and Alex are to me."
Maggie stood and Lena hugged her goodbye, but Maggie paused.
"Lena, do you have feelings for Kara, I mean besides friendship?"
Lena took a step back, "Um … you know Kara is my best friend so the feelings run deep there," Lena said awkwardly. "Why? Did she say something?"
"I think maybe the two of you should sit and talk," Maggie said. "If you are just friends fine, but if you aren't you each deserve to know what is between you."
Maggie said goodbye once more and then left Lena to her thoughts and her work. Maggie thought about going to the DEO – maybe seeing if Alex was less mad at her or maybe trying to find out where Evo had been taken, but she decided against both and went home instead. She spent the rest of the day bored. She sat at home – although she did take Gertrude to the park for a while – and when dinner time came around she hadn't heard from Alex and she hadn't returned. Maggie had decided against calling or texting her because if this was Evo, Maggie felt like it was best if he came to her.
Maybe if he sensed she had no real interest in this fantasy world, he would give up or at least reveal himself so she could confront him.
But Alex never came home that night and Maggie again went to bed alone. In the morning, her alarm went off and she got up and showered, and got ready for work before taking Gertrude out. She was standing outside with her when Alex returned.
Alex stopped when she saw her standing there.
"I just came to change clothes," Alex said.
Maggie nodded but didn't answer. She went back to concentrating on Gertrude and Alex went upstairs.
While she appreciated Lena's advice, she wasn't going to immerse herself in this world. If she didn't play along then Evo would have to change things up to get her to engage.
Once Gertrude was done, Maggie went back upstairs. She unleashed Gertrude who went over to her area and settled down on her bed. Maggie already had her keys in hand so she went ahead and left, leaving Alex there alone.
The day passed pretty mundanely and around lunchtime, she got a text from Alex – "I'm coming home tonight."
Maggie responded with a simple Ok.
She spent the rest of the afternoon trying to figure out how this was going to play out.
If this was Evo in control then she figured he would be the first to apologize and perhaps work to brush aside her concerns. If it was Alex then she might apologize for storming out, but Maggie didn't see her apologizing for sticking her guns on the Evo talk. Either way, it would open the door to the discussion once more. She needed to engage in conversation to spark something because for all she knew she had been unconscious for two days in the DEO medbay while Lena observed their brainwaves for any change – and there probably hadn't been any or else she wouldn't still be here.
At least she had a small plan before going home, she thought as she walked to her car at the end of her shift. She got into the driver's seat and looked in her rearview mirror and almost had a heart attack as she saw Alex sitting there.
"What the hell," Maggie said, turning in her seat, but once she did, there was no one there. She looked into the mirror, again and again, there was Alex and she appeared to be saying something but Maggie didn't hear anything. Again she turned around but her back seat was empty.
Getting out of the car, she ran her hands through her hair. "Ok, calm down," she said to herself even as she walked around the car to make sure she was indeed alone.
"Maggie."
Maggie turned quickly in a circle but there was no one there. But she recognized that voice – she would recognize that voice anywhere – it was Alex.
"Alex?" she called out. "Alex."
There was no one there.
She walked slowly to get in the car once more and again looked in the mirror but nothing. Starting the car, she knew she had seen Alex sitting back there and she realized now it was Alex dressed like she had been there at the DEO medbay. Did that mean that maybe that was the actual Alex? Maybe Alex was trying to make contact with her but couldn't because of Evo.
That would mean Evo was the other Alex.
Putting in the car in gear, she headed home to finally confront him. She wasn't going to let him get away with playing games with her or Alex any longer.
…
Maggie got home first and besides taking Gertrude out, she didn't do anything. She was sitting on the couch, her sidearm still in its holster as she waited.
She didn't have to wait too long before Alex was coming through the door.
"Hi," Alex said as she shut the door and put her bag down.
"Hi," Maggie said standing up and immediately pulling her gun and pointing it at her. "Sit down Evo."
"Maggie, what are you doing?" Alex said, coming toward her.
"Sit down," Maggie said, and she moved out of the way so Alex could sit. "I know you aren't Alex. I know you are Evo. Now you are going to sit down and you are going to tell me once and for all how to separate you from her."
"Maggie," Alex said. "I think …"
"Sit down."
"Ok," Alex said, calmly. "I'm sitting down."
Once Alex was sitting, Maggie adjusted so she was between her and the door.
"Now tell me how to stop this little game of yours," Maggie said. "Or I will shoot you in the head."
"I don't know what is going on Maggie, but this is getting out of hand," Alex said. "I'm not Evo. Maggie, please, I don't know where this is coming from, but we dealt with Evo two years ago. It's over."
"No," Maggie said. "You can give up the act. I know you aren't Alex. I know none of this is real. You and I aren't married!"
"Maggie," Alex said, standing up. "Please, put the gun down. Whatever is going on, I promise you I will help you, but you need to put the gun down."
"I swear if you don't sit, I will put a bullet through your head."
"I'm not going to sit down," Alex said. "Because I don't believe you are going to shoot me." She took a step toward her.
"Stop," Maggie ordered. "I will shoot."
"No, you won't," Alex said taking another step and Maggie knew she would have to shoot or back up because Alex was close enough to rush her. "You won't shoot me. Maggie, I'm your wife. I'm Alex. You know me. You know I'm not Evo. We got past all of that – together – you helped me deal with what he did to me. You are the reason I'm standing here right now. You helped me pull free from him. You helped me when I was struggling through therapy. I wanted to quit but you wouldn't let me. Now, please just put the gun down and we can talk about it."
Alex took another half step and Maggie wavered only a second before pointing the gun lower and shooting.
The bullet struck Alex in the left thigh and she went down immediately and cried out in pain.
Maggie just stood there in disbelief that she had actually pulled the trigger but even more so in that Alex appeared to be in pain and reacting as if she had been shot in the real world. Alex was covering the wound with her hand to keep pressure on it even as she reached with her other hand to get her phone out of her pocket.
"Call Kara."
"Alex?" Kara answered.
"Apartment now. I've been shot."
A few moments later Supergirl flew into the apartment. She paused only a moment as she saw Maggie standing there over Alex with the gun. She picked up her sister and flew back out.
"Shit," Maggie said once they were gone. Had she just shot her wife?
…
Maggie went into the DEO wondering if she was about to be taken into custody. She had shot Alex. She had used her service weapon and shot an unarmed civilian in her home. She had broken so many regulations that IA would be on her ass for months.
Not to mention it appeared she was wrong.
This world was real, and she had shot her wife.
No one had stopped her on the way in or said anything to her as she made her way down to the medbay. She ended up walking into the same room that they had used when getting Evo out of Alex's mind and Alex was sitting up with bandages wrapped around her thigh. Kara was standing there at the bedside.
"You've been a cop how long and your first accidental discharge had to be into my sister's leg," Kara said.
Maggie looked at Alex, who didn't say anything, and Maggie realized Alex had covered for her – when she didn't deserve it.
"I'm so sorry," Maggie said.
"Kara can you give us a minute," Alex said.
"Sure," Kara said, and she walked to the door before stopping. "Maggie, try not to shoot her while I'm gone."
"I won't," Maggie said, keeping her eyes on Alex.
Once the door closed, Maggie took a step toward the bed. "I am so sorry," she said.
"What is going on with you?" Alex asked. "First the whole Evo thing the other night and then last night, Maggie you shot me. You said I wasn't your wife. You believed I was Evo."
"I know, I know," Maggie said, running her fingers through her hair. "I … I um called Lena before I came here. She's agreed to run some neurological tests on me, some scans to maybe figure out what's happening up here in my brain."
Alex reached out her hand to her and Maggie came closer and took it. "How long has this been going on? Why didn't you tell me?" Alex said, her concern evident.
"Because, um, because I thought you were Evo. I thought this wasn't real," Maggie said, and she began to tell her how when she woke the other morning she was disoriented and how she believed she had just been inserted into a brain with Alex to help in removing Evo. She truly had believed none of it was real despite signs like her not even being around Alex that showed it wasn't.
When she was done, she said I'm sorry once again.
Alex moved off the bed and Maggie was about to stop her, but she didn't as she saw Alex was moving to hug her.
"We will get through this," Alex said.
"Together," Maggie responded.
As they embraced, she didn't see the smile on Alex's face.
