The next day…
"Whoever that was, they were fast. Fast enough to get away from me even at web slinging speed. As soon as school ends I've got to look into this." Peter thought.
He headed into Midtown. Later, during lunch he ran into MJ in the hallway.
"Someone's really enjoying their new partner" she said after their hellos.
"What… Gwen? Yeah It's been great. We really got close during the break."
"I'm happy for you, really. What you guys have is honest, and that's not
something you see often around here-." She gasped.
"Are you okay?" Peter questioned.
She replied, "Just fine dude. What were we talking about?"
Peter jokingly responded, "You were talking about how great is was to
have an honest relationship."
"Right!" her voice got high pitched. "I'm glad we found each other."
Then MJ did the unthinkable.
She kissed him.
Peter resisted with eyes wide open. He thought about backing off but it was probably
better to just let her get it over with and then talk.
After a few seconds, she stopped. "What's wrong?"
Peter got kind of ticked.
"What's wrong! Why did you do that? You know I'm with Gwen."
"I'm sorry I didn't know." she replied.
"We were just talking about it!" he said, convinced she was messing with him.
"I must have amnesia or something." MJ thought aloud.
Peter sighed, "You know what, it's fine just forget it ever happened." as he
turned around and went to have lunch with Gwen.
After school Peter headed to the bugle to hand in his photos
of Scorpion.
"Who's this!" Jameson shouted.
"Apparently this is the 'scorpion.'" Peter described calmly.
"Rhetorical question, clearly this is yesterday's news. The people want to hear
about this new villain in town." He put his hands up in exclamation.
"We've already got the perfect name for em, Hyper-Drive!
Good huh, came up with that one myself."
Peter assumed Jonah wanted photos of Hyperdrive.
"I'll get on it right away boss."
"Good! Now go! You've been holding up my journalist for 48.2 seconds!"
Peter walked out and heard the usual wrath of Jonah from the office.
"Lee! What am I paying you for, get me a source on this or it's
a bunch of baloney!"
On the elevator down Peter got a call from Gwen.
"I think I've figured out a way to help you track down the guy from last night."
"Awesome, how does it work?"
"Come meet me at the Connors' Lab and I'll show you."
"I'll be right over. See you then."
"Bye." She hung up.
On his swing over he contemplated whether or not to tell Gwen about the whole
MJ thing. "I still can't understand it.
One moment MJ and I are talking about Gwen, and the next
it's like she doesn't even exist. No one just gets amnesia like that."
The city ambience interrupted him.
"But it's probably better if I just tell her before anything gets out of hand."
He changed back to Peter Parker and headed in to see Gwen.
Warren was out of the lab, probably just doing field testing as usual.
Besides, it's not like they were supposed to be working today anyway.
Peter took a breath and went to talk to Gwen.
"Hey, before you show me whatever it is, something happened I think
you should know about."
Gwen responded, "MJ kissed you, I get it. Apparently she's had short term memory loss lately."
"How do you know that?"
"She called and let me know, it's totally cool." Gwen said.
"Something isn't adding up." Peter thought.
"Not even I would react this well about another guy kissing Gwen."
"So… what was it you were going to show me?" He said aloud.
She looked down at what she was working on.
"Gwen. You still with me?" Peter asked.
After a second she responded, "Yeah, sorry, I've just been feeling a little
out of it."
She picked up the gadget she'd just created.
"Here." Gwen said, handing it to him.
"What is it? Looks like some sort of beacon."
"It's a tracking device. Next time you fight someone fast, like that guy last night,
stick this on them and we can see where they are."
"Wow, why didn't I ever think of this." Peter replied.
"I'm guessing having a double life doesn't leave an awful lot of room for thought." said
Gwen sarcastically.
Meanwhile…
Cameron Blake was on the football field when something unusual happened.
He had a vision.
There was a figure in the dead of night, embedded in lightning,
but it wasn't any ordinary lightning.
It was shrouded in black like the contrast slider was shot up to eleven.
This thing flew around a damaged New York destroying everything in sight.
Spider-Man was fighting him in Times Square, and losing.
Cameron flashed back to reality, only to get immediately tackled.
"What was that…?" he wondered.
Author's Note:
Safe to say I've had an eventful year, but I truly do miss writing these and finally have the time to do them again. It's been 9 months since the last chapter, and I've got some time to make up for. So let's get back into this. Thanks to everyone who's followed the story lately, you've really inspired me to start writing again.
