Pooh walked for a while on one of the roads leading to his usual thinking spot. He found a large egg and now he needs to figure out what to do next. Upon arrival, he sat on a log and wrapped the egg in his big, green scarf to be sure that the egg wasn't cold. He placed it on the ground. "Now," he said. "What should I do now?" He put one paw to his head and rubbed it gently while he had another paw under the other. "Think…Think…Think…" Unfortunately, no matter how hard he tried to concentrate, his brain couldn't come up with the right answer.
He looked at the egg again. It laid still. Cradled in the green fabric, it looked like an orange flower ready to bloom at any moment. It no longer wiggled or made any noises since Pooh placed it there. So many questions hovered over the egg like a large storm cloud. Where did it come from? Where was its nest? Was anyone looking around the Hundred Acer Wood for the egg?
"It's terrible that you can't talk. I don't know where you mama is or isn't. If only there was a way that you can so that I can have my friends-" He stopped. Very slowly, a thought immediately came to him. He smiled. "That's it!" He yelled, jumping to his feet. "I'll go show you to my friends. Maybe they might know something." Pooh picked up the egg, wrapping the scarf around the egg as much as possible and began walking on the path that led to Piglet's house. "We'll go see Piglet first," He said. "His house is close by and I'm sure if he saw your mother, he'll let us know."
Not long afterward, Pooh arrived at Piglet's house. The large tree standing proud with multiple shades of reds, yellows and oranges in each leaf. Beneath the tree, under the large sign reading "Trespassers Will", Piglet was raking up the leaves that were scattered along the ground. The small animal hummed as he raked the large leaves that littered the ground. Suddenly, a stray wind blew his large pile away. The leaves started to fly off the ground like butterflies and one enormous maple leaf flew right in Pooh's direction. "Look out Pooh!" Piglet warned, running after the leaf.
Pooh smiled, tried shifting the egg to his other arm and was about to wave hello when the maple leaf crashed into his face. Piglet sighed, rubbing his head. "Hello, Piglet," Pooh said, his voice being completely muffled by the leaf. "Good to see you're doing well this morning. Can you please help me?" He bent his legs slightly in order for Piglet to reach the leaf clinging to his face. "I'm afraid I'll drop the egg."
Piglet was puzzled by this strange request. It wasn't until Pooh moved his free paw toward his other paw that he began to notice a large egg wrapped in a green scarf that he understood what he meant. He pulled the leaf off Pooh's face and placed it on the ground. "Pooh, where did you find it?" He asked. Piglet knelt close to the egg as his friend adjusted the scarf to reveal the orange shell. Reluctant, but curious, he touched it. The warmth of the egg spread throughout his body. He quickly pulled back his paw. "Goodness! It's so warm. Where did you find it?"
"I found it floating on the river earlier this morning. Don't worry, Piglet. I used a stick this time." Pooh could feel some of his strength starting to give to the heavy egg, but doesn't wish to set it down. "I was hoping that you've might have seen a large orange bird flying over here earlier this morning?"
Piglet shook his head. "No Pooh, I haven't. Not even a single feather." He continued glancing at the egg. He couldn't help but wonder of what sort of creature would be in an egg of such size. His curiosity overruled his fear and he knocked on the shell three times. Soon, the egg began to wiggle before him. It also made strange squeaking noises that made his heart leap into his throat. He grabbed the maple leaf to shield himself. "P-P-Pooh! Whatever's inside that egg, it might eat us or the mother might…" He gulped. "Smash us to bits like a heffalump would."
"Well, Lumpy's mama said that heffalumps don't come from eggs and she and Lumpy are heffalumps so it doesn't make them all bad." Pooh rubbed the egg gingerly. "I still think it's a bird of sorts." He adjusted his scarf to keep the egg warm further. "Let's head over to Rabbit's place. He might know something.
After Piglet tossed the maple leaf aside and put away his rake, he went with his friend to make sure that he would be alright. The two friends had walked a far distance from Piglet's house. The air was warming up a bit, but still gave off a cold wind now and then. Piglet glanced at the egg every once in a while to make sure it didn't hatch before they could figure out what creature it belongs to. For all he knew, a monster would pop out at any moment and eat them where they stood. Pooh, on the other hand, was enjoying his long walk to Rabbit's place, he could almost imagine having a little fuzzy chick coming out and greeting him and his friends with several peeps. I wonder if it might like some honey. He thought. As they were halfway to Rabbit's, they came upon Tigger, Roo and Lumpy who were bouncing and playing tag.
"Tag!" Roo Shouted. He giggled as he bounced away from his friend. "You're it Tigger."
"Watch Out!" Tigger grinned from ear to ear. "I'm gonna getcha!"
"Good Morning Tigger, Roo, Lumpy. Have you seen-" Pooh was cut off as Roo crashed into him, launching the egg into the air. "Oh No!" He gasped. "Don't let it fall!" He ran as fast he could. Paws outstretched frantically to make sure it didn't hit the ground.
"I got it! I got it!" Tigger bounced on his tail, giving him enough height to meet the egg. He caught it quickly once it collided with his chest, but the speed also caused him to head straight for a tree. Lumpy got onto his hind legs and caught both of them in his trunk. The purple heffalump cradling them as he lowered himself down. "Are you alright Tigger?" He asked. "That was a close one." He placed Tigger, who soon realized it was an egg once some of the scarf came loose, safely on the ground.
Tigger admired the orange coloring and grinned. "Gee, Pooh boy," he said after handing the egg back to a very concerned bear. "Where did you find such a whopper? Normally the easter bunny wouldn't hide eggs that big!" He chuckled.
Suddenly, squeaks came out of the egg and frantic movements began so quickly that Pooh nearly dropped it. Pooh bear held it firmly to his chest with as much strength he could muster. Everyone else began to find cover. Piglet ducked to the nearest tree hole he could find. Tigger leaped onto a tree branch while Roo and Lumpy hid behind a fallen log.
"Shh…It's alright." Pooh cradled the egg as best as he could. The squirming became less with each motion of the bear's arms. "No one meant to scare you. They didn't know. Now, now, don't cry." Pooh said in a hush tone, treating the egg as if a baby bird had already hatched from it. All of its noises soon slowed to one peep. Pooh and everyone else sighed with relief. Pooh looked up to his friends. "I found it floating in a river. I was hoping that one of you might have seen a large, orange bird flying around this morning."
Tigger shook his head. He slowly lowered himself down from his branch, his feet meeting the ground. "Nope. Didn't see any bird, but it sure sounds like a jagular!"
"Or a spookable", Roo piped up.
"Oh! I hope it's not a Kabloo," Lumpy said, his trunk slithering onto the log. His large head slightly close to the ground.
"Well," Pooh sighed. "I guess I would have to head over to Rabbit's. He might have an idea." He shifted the egg and wrapped back in his scarf once more. The heat, however, didn't fade. His arms were beginning to ache, but he knew the egg might be frightened again if he let one of his friends hold it. Even worse, one of them might drop the egg. As far as they knew, there could be a monster inside ready to eat them without a moment's hesitation. Could it?
Slowly, everyone approached Pooh, getting close to him with every ounce of courage they could muster. Whatever was inside, they didn't want poor Pooh bear to go at it alone. Tigger was the first to break the long silence. "Hate to tell ya', Pooh, but long ears' not home. He went with Kanga and donkey boy to meet up with Kessy and Owl. They were gonna have tea and stuff."
"W-well, m-m-m-m-maybe Owl has a book on eggs," Piglet suggested, his nerves settling down. "It could help know what's going to hatch from that egg." Piglet stared at the object wearily. The more the egg doesn't move, the more he's worried that the egg would hatch soon. "Unless it's a large snake!" He gulped.
A loud growl sounded, causing everyone except Pooh to jump. Pooh looked down at his tummy. "Might as well see if Owl has any honey left. It's been a while since I've had breakfast." He said, chuckling to himself. He tightened the scarf tightly to ensure that the egg would be kept warm further while they were taking the long route to Owl's house.
Lumpy walked a little closer to Pooh. "Um…Pooh," he spoke, eyes focused on the egg. "Your arms look tired. If it's alright with you, may I hold it for a bit? I promise I won't drop it."
Pooh was hesitant for a long moment. He looked back on the egg. "Little friend…uh…big friend." He wasn't sure if the creature inside would be as big as the egg it's inside, but he had to be sure it wouldn't be frightened of being held by someone that's not Pooh. "Can you try not to make too much noise?" He stroked the shell gently. "I know my friends are a little scary, but once you come out, I'm sure we'll all be best of friends." He handed the egg to Lumpy. "Please be careful."
Lumpy extended his trunk as Poo carefully handed the egg to him. Lumpy wrapped his trunk around it. He soon began to feel the warmth of the egg touch him as if a summer breeze entered his body. There was a small movement inside as if the baby inside had nestled into the curves of the trunk, falling asleep in the process. "Hello there," Lumpy spoke in a gentle voice. "I'm Lumpy. Please don't be scared of me. Also, if you are a snake, can you be a good one?" There was no answer, but the warmth of the egg caused Lumpy's heart to beat wildly.
Pooh stretched his tired arms, but he felt strange without the familiar weight of the egg carried on him. For some reason, it reminded him of Christopher Robin. He sighed. "Let's go." Soon, Pooh, Piglet, Roo, Tigger and Lumpy all began to walk to Owl's house. However, they weren't aware of the fact that two mysterious creatures had been hiding in a far off bush. Two pairs of beastly eyes glaring angrily at a far distance.
