Phoenix Fall betrayed his mother and was adopted by Ozpin when he was twelve; he started to attend Beacon with RWBY and JNPR when he was sixteen. What happened in this four-year gap? This is a side story to "Flaming Rose", another fanfic of mine. It's more a summary than a full story. I don't own RWBY, it's owned by Rooster Teeth. Story also on AO3

Phoenix is caught off guard by the task force during his first encounter with them.

Grant arrives just as Phoenix escapes.

Phoenix feels guilty about having to fight the police despite the VPD's corruption.

He is able to get some information on Grant from Ozpin.

Phoenix is better prepared for his next encounter with the task force.

He is able to knock all of them out, but Grant arrives in time to stop his escape this time.

Phoenix tries to tell Grant about how corrupt the VPD is, but Grant refuses to listen.

He ends up almost being caught by Grant, but Grant's senses are overwhelmed by a train (the fight is in a subway).
