It's 1919. The Darwinists have won; Alek has gained and lost an Empire. When the British send Deryn Sharp as one of the guards meant to escort Alek to Swizerland, the estranged friends find themselves entangled in a dangerous web of conflicting loyalties.

An accident in Dr. Barlow's cabin gets Deryn and Alek's bodies switched. The Leviathan is going back to Istanbul, and now Alek must perform a mission meant for Deryn on his own.
