"Why aren't you two using the modern technology, to know if the baby will be a boy or a girl?" Violet asked, when Robert visited her.
"Cora doesn't want to know the gender, and what does it change if we would know already?" Robert countered.
"Well, you could start planning, if we would know this baby is a boy."
"Mama, I am sticking with Cora's choice. She has to endure already so much, since she married me."
"She knew what she was stepping into." Violet said.
"I doubt that Mama. I don't think she did.
"You are a fast learner." Steve said. "By the way, did you ever think about writing your own songs?"
Cora looked up from the guitar. "Me? What makes you think I could do that?"
"Just give it a try." Simon chimed in.
Cora played with the strings, forming an easy tune. "Just let me focus on learning to play this instrument."
"Whatever you want. Maybe one day, you will start believing in yourself."
There was a knock on the door.
"Robert? I didn't know you were coming?"
"I hadn't told you, but I have a little surprise for you."
Cora looked up with a big smile. "For what?"
"Well, you had your birthday last month, but with you feeling sick there wasn't much we could do. So, I saved the surprise for today."
Cora's hand went absentmindedly to her abdomen. "But the necklace and earrings you gave me, were a lovely gift. That was enough." She said while walking outside with Robert, after saying goodbye to Simon and Steve.
"This is something I wanted to do from the start and now this is a good excuse. I am going to show you Downton Abbey." He opened the car door and helped Cora inside.
"But why? That estate isn't in the family for years now." Cora said.
"It could be again." Robert said focusing on the road again.
Cora wasn't sure what he meant, but she wasn't in the mood to argue with Robert.
Cora noticed a change in Robert's eyes, when they drove up the driveway to the Abbey. Her own heart made a little jump too. The building was majestic. She couldn't imagine people living there, it was enormous.
Robert put his hand on Cora's knee. "What do you think?"
"It's beautiful." She put her hand on his. "Did you ever live here?"
"Unfortunately, not, my grandfather had already sold the estate. I would have loved to be the owner."
Cora got the feeling Robert wanted to say more, but he kept quiet.
Robert stopped the car in front of the Abbey, walked around the car to help Cora out. She had accepted in the last months that, that was what Robert did. He once said: 'This is how a lady should be treated, and you are a real lady, my lady.'
The enormous front door was opened by a butler, who guided them into the sitting room. Cora was overwhelmed with the building. Large columns surrounded the great hall, when she looked up, she saw big archways. Beautiful paintings surrounded her. A big staircase gave access to the second floor.
After some time of casual chatting, Robert said. "How serious are you about selling?"
Cora looked up from her teacup. What was Robert's intention? When their host turned around to pour in some whisky for Robert, Cora leaned in. "What are you doing?" She whispered.
"You can live a real lady's life, very soon here at the Abbey." He took her hand. "This is my surprise. I am buying back Downton Abbey. Our little one will be born on the ground he belongs."
"And when were you going to tell me this?" Cora hissed through her teeth." She put a smile on her face when their host turned back around.
Robert had talked with the current owner, while Cora was taken outside for a walk. She was now sitting next to Robert in the car. She faced towards the window and tried to turn her body as far as she could.
She didn't want to talk, she was steaming mad. This was Robert's intention all the time. Using her money to buy back the estate. He had told her they would pump it into the company. She would ask her mother to look into the arrangement. She wasn't sure the money was free to use. She hoped there would be some writing Robert could only use it for the company. She didn't want to live her life at the Abbey. That was not what she had signed up for.
"Cora?" Robert tried. "Can we please have a conversation about this?"
"So, now you want to talk. After you already made the decision." She kept looking out the window.
Robert touched her knee. "I truly thought you would like this. Hence, I thought you would be happy, I am using your money in a good way."
"Just drive me home alright?!" Cora said fighting against her tears.
Robert hadn't come directly to bed, when Cora went into the bedroom. They didn't share a word, the drive had been in total silence.
"Are you awake?" Robert asked, when he got in on his side.
Cora didn't answer, she just laid there staring at the wall.
"Cora, can we please talk?"
Cora turned around. "Ok, start with the explanation how you lied to me from the beginning, how you tricked me."
"What?" Robert was in shock. "You knew, I married you for the money."
"Oh, that I know. I definitely know, there wasn't love and there still isn't. But if I had known, I would have to live on an estate, somewhere in the countryside. I would not have agreed with this marriage."
"Cora, please." Robert touched her arm.
"Tell me, what is confusing you? Am I not telling the truth? You don't love me, right?"
Robert pulled his hand back and stared at the duvet. "I admire you."
"That is not the same, and you know that."
"Cora, love is something you can't force."
"I know, and I came to accept that. But you will not drag me to the countryside, to act like a lady of the Manor. I already don't know, how to do that, here in London. Let alone, on my own at Downton. Robert, you have to come up with some other idea, I stand my ground and say no."
Robert sighed. "I will come up with a solution. We don't have to live at Downton if you really don't want to."
"Do you promise?" Cora asked in a softer voice.
"We will find something. I already put out an offer, so there is no way back, but we will figure it out." He kissed Cora's cheek. "I am sorry, I should have discussed this with you before."
Cora sighed. "You are something else, but you are my something else." She gave him a kiss. "Now, go to sleep. We will talk tomorrow."
