When Robert was discharged from the hospital, he wanted to start arranging the move. But Cora forced him to slow down. The doctors had warned him to keep a slow pace. His body needed time to heal.
John had taken over at the office, and even Violet was ordering Robert to stay at home. They were all scared he would overdo it.
"Are you ready?" Cora asked Robert, handing Mary to Nanny. Robert was sitting in one of the armchairs in front of the roof terrace. He looked up: "For what?"
Cora smiled and walked over, she took his hand and placed it on her abdomen. "We are getting our first look at our little bean."
"How could I forget." Robert put his hands on Cora's waist and kissed her abdomen. "I can't wait to see this little one for the first time."
Cora played with his hair, it was getting longer, so it curled up in his neck. Cora thought it was adorable.
Violet opened the door. "You didn't tell me, you were coming. Come in." She stepped aside to let Robert and Cora in.
"Mama, we suspect you already know, but we now we want to tell you officially." Robert handed her the scan they got at the hospital. "We are expecting a little one." He took Cora's hand in his.
"I suspected it but wasn't sure. Cora had her hand on her abdomen a lot when you were in the hospital. Congratulations. Let's hope this time it is a boy."
Robert felt Cora stiffen up, he squeezed her hand. "Mama, a boy or a girl. It doesn't matter, as long as the little one is healthy."
Cora had offered to make tea and was busy in the kitchen. She overheard the conversation between Robert and Violet.
"I hope this time you will know the gender with the next scan?" She heard Violet's voice.
Cora couldn't understand what Robert said.
"Of course, it matters." Violet said. The rest Cora couldn't understand.
The tea was ready, and Cora decided to safe Robert from this conversation. She opened the kitchen door and walked back in.
That evening Robert went to bed early. When Cora came in, he was facing towards the wall. She scooted closer and kissed the back of his head. "Sleep tight, darling."
Robert didn't answer, but Cora felt his body tensed. "Sweetheart?" She asked when she heard his held back tears. "What's wrong?"
Robert turned around but didn't look at Cora when he said: "Mama, suggested to end the pregnancy if it isn't a boy."
Cora swallowed and needed a minute to compose herself. "I hope you don't agree."
"No!" He looked up into her eyes. "Of course, I would love our little one to be a boy, but if it is a girl, she is more than welcome."
Cora saw the tears in his eyes and realised how hurt he was by his mother's words. She pulled him close, he wrapped both arms around her and they sat there.
"Are you ready for the move?" Robert asked.
The movers would come and pack everything the day after tomorrow. Mr. Bamford would leave the house tomorrow. It was strange for Cora to not do anything, accept making sure, Robert wasn't overdoing things.
"I will miss this home but knowing how happy you will be at Downton makes everything alright."
"Will you be happy?" He asked.
"When you and Mary are happy I am. Now go to sleep, we will have busy days ahead of us. I want you to really mind yourself and don't do too much."
Robert put his hand on Cora's abdomen. "I can say the same thing to you. You are carrying a precious load." He put his face close to her belly. "Little one, be nice to your mother and stay safe." He kissed her belly.
Cora rested her hand on Robert's head. "Boy or girl? You will be happy?"
Robert got up a little and kissed her intense. "Whatever you are carrying, I am happy. I just want a healthy baby."
Cora tried to believe his words, but like her first pregnancy, there was that voice in her head, telling her Robert wanted a boy and not a girl.
At the end of the day, Cora got in the car, she was exhausted. Mary had been crying constantly. Robert was irritated since this morning and couldn't handle her crying and snapped at Cora at every little thing. The movers did most of the work but had been constantly busy.
Robert sighed, "Can you do something about Mary!"
"And what do you think I tried today! I don't know what to do. Maybe you could try. She is not only my daughter." Cora turned on the ignition and drove off. They had a 4-hour drive ahead.
After about an hour drive in silence, Robert put his hand on Cora's knee. The movement of the car had shushed Mary down. "Do you want me to drive?" He noticed Cora was fighting against sleep.
"I don't want to stop the car, what if Mary starts crying again. And aren't you tired?"
"You better stop the car, before you fall asleep behind the wheel."
Cora sighed and took the nearest exit. Slowly she parked the car. Mary didn't wake up to Cora's relieve. She turned towards Robert. "Are you sure you can drive?"
"To be perfectly honest, I am really tired too."
"Why did you offer to drive than? Cora gave him an annoyed look.
"Because I was scared you were falling asleep." Robert raised his voice, what woke Mary up, who of course started fussing
Cora got out and took Mary out of her car seat. She started to walk around with her. When Mary finally was calm again, Cora walked back to the car. Robert was sitting behind the wheel. "Robert, you just said you were tired too?"
"We aren't driving up to Downton. I just booked a bedbreakfast for tonight. It will be 23.00 o'clock if we keep driving."
Cora gave him a thankful look. "It was stupid to think, we could pack up the home and drive up to Downton on the same day. Thank you."
