Chapter 3
It's the end of the working day, Chas and Betty do the end of shift cleaning, Chas hears his cellphone ringing and picks it out of his front pocket to answer the phone.
"Hello Didi" said Chas
"Hello Charles, can you please drop off Tommy and Dil where Paddy O'Reilly used to live" said Dil
"Sure, I can drop off the boys… The house down the bloc right?" asked Chas
"Yes that's right the new neighbours are called Dave and Jackie Kilwolski their very friendly" said Didi
"That's good to know, glad to hear we got friendly new neighbours" said Chas
"The Kilwolski family will be hosting a BBQ at the end of the week and all the neighbours are invited" said Didi
"How wonderful, I'll be sure to bring my family along and I got good news to share with you" said Chas
"What would that be, Charles?" asked Didi
"Chuckie got top of the class for his book report at school today" said Chas
"Oh how wonderful you must be very proud of him" said Didi
"I sure am, I can not wait to tell Kira the good news" said Chas
"Since we are still on the line can you please pass me over to Betty" asked Didi
"Sure thing Didi, one second..." said Chas
"Betty!... Didi wants to speak to you" said Chas
"Hello Didi" said Betty
"Hello Betty, I understand Alex, Allie and Beth are at the Java Lava?" asked Didi
"They sure are, the kids are getting along great with each other" said Betty
"Wonderful, their Dad Dave asked if you could drop off the kids at theirs?" said Didi
"Sure Deed, plenty of space in the wagon. where do they stay?" asked Betty
"They bought Paddy O'Reilly's old place" said Didi
"That's why there was a moving van two days ago, sure thing Didi" said Betty
"Thank you Betty, it's highly appreciated you and Charles dropping off the kids" said Didi
"Don't sweat it Deed" said Betty
"Okay bye then" said Didi
"Bye" said Betty
Betty hands back his cellphone, Chas then tells Tommy and Dil they will be dropped off at the Kilwolskis house.
"Tommy, you and Dil will be having dinner at Alex's house, I will drop you both off soon as we are done with the cleaning" said Chas
"Great! This day just gets better and better" said Alex
"I look forward to it" said Tommy
"I can introduce you to my friend Biffy" said Allie
"Will we have more company?" asked Tommy
"No Tommy, that's Allies imaginary friend" said Beth
"Dil has one named Izzy" said Tommy
"Lil got upset as I apparently ran him over" said Chuckie
"You sure did, Chuckie" said Phil
"What? I'm emphatic, I feel Dil's pain" said Lil
"You got upset over an imaginary friend?" asked Alex
Lil is quick to change the subject in fear that Alex will find her weird for what she just said.
"What did you think of the Moonpies?" asked Lil
"Ain't you quick to change the subject" said Kimi
"Don't ruin this for me..." said Lil
Meanwhile at the Kilwolski residence
"That's fine Dave, the kids will get dropped off soon as they close the Java Lava" said Didi
"That's very kind of them, we need to check the place out soon" said Dave
"Thanks for allowing us to invite Pop over for dinner" said Stu
"My pleasure Stu, the more the merrier" said Dave
The doorbell rings and Jackie answers the door, she is greeted by Lou's arrival.
"Hello you must be Lou Pickles" said Jackie
"That's me and you are?" asked Lou
"Jackie Kilwolski, let me hang your coat" said Jackie
"Thanks, Jackie... I had to drive fifteen miles to get here" said Lou
Lou arrives in the kitchen where Dave, Didi, Stu are congregating.
"Hi Pop, did you get here alright?" asked Stu
"Fine Stu, I think I drove through a red light or was that a fire hydrant?" said Lou
"I think you should book a test at the DMV" said Didi
"Oh relax, my driving skills are as sharp as when I first passed my driving test" said Lou
"Can I get you a drink?" asked Jackie
"A glass of prune juice please" asked Lou
"Coming right up" said Dave
Not long after Grandpa Lou's arrival, both Pickles and Kilwolski kids arrive and enter the house.
"We are home!" shouted Beth
"We have some guests we would like you to meet" said Dave
"You must be Tommy and Dil" said Dave
"That we are" said Tommy
"These are our neighbours Didi, Stu and his father Lou" said Dave
"Nice to meet you both" said Beth
"I see you three are at the same school as the boys and their pals" said Didi
"That's right, we've been hanging with them for most of the day" said Beth
"Hi Grandpa" said Tommy
"Hello boys, good day at school?" asked Lou
"It was okay… I guess" said Tommy
"You must be the the three scouts" said Lou
"Yes, sir I'm Alex" said Alex
"Nice to meet you Alex" said Lou
"This is Allie" said Alex
"Hello old dude" said Allie
"Allie! don't be so rude to our guest" shouted Jackie
"Oh don't worry about it Jackie, she's only telling the truth. I'm ain't no spring chicken any more" said Lou as he laughs.
"Alex, Beth and Allie go wash up, dinner is almost ready" said Dave
"Why you not telling Tommy and Dil to wash up?" asked Allie
"They are the guests" said Dave
"The water is contaminated with rat pee you know" said Allie
"I highly doubt it is, the water is perfectly clean. Now go wash up" said Dave
"That's our little girl Allie, always has been into her conspiracy theories" said Jackie
"You don't say..." said Didi in irony
The kids quickly go up stairs to wash up and return to the kitchen.
"We are just waiting for their grandparents, they shouldn't be too long" said Jackie
Soon after the doorbell rings and their Grandparents finally arrive.
"At last their here" said Dave
"I'll let them in" said Jackie
"Hello Jackie dear" said Edna
"I do say dinner smells delicous" said Pip
Allie leaves her chair racing to see her Grandpa as she jumps in for massive hug.
"Hello Allie sweetie" said Pip
"I hope you don't mind the extra company" said Jackie
"Not at all Jackie, I think it's great to meet new people" said Edna
They both enter the dining room, where everyone is waiting to eat, Didi nudges her elbow under the table to stop Dil from playing with his cutlery.
"Your face looks familiar" said Lou
As he suspiciously looks at Pip.
"I would say I recognise your face as well" said Pip
"Everyone this is my mother Edna and my father Pip" said Dave
"Now that we are all here, let's eat" said Jackie
After spending two and a half hours eating as the starter and main course is finished, Jackie brings a huge chocolate cake for desert.
"I hope everyone still has room for dessert" said Jackie
As everyone is eating their dessert, Lou and Pip have kept giving each other dirty looks since the meal began.
"I thought I remember your face, your kikwalski" said Lou as he speaks in-between bites of his cake.
"Have you both known each from before?" asked Beth
"Yes Beth my Dear, We have both fought in World War 2" said Pip
"Wow that is so cool… Did you see a lot of action?" asked Dil
"I will tell you children… it all started..." said Pip
***Start Of Flashback***
"Okay Pickles… you're going to the front line" said The Sargent
Lou's superior approaches him, telling him to go to the front line. Waking up from his slumber he salutes The Sargent. Lou swivels his leg but unfortunately he trips over his rolled up ground sheet this in turn breaking his leg.
"Ah!… Conflab it Sarge!… I think I broke my leg!" screamed Lou
Lou sitting on the ground grabs his leg while suffering in agony as Pip laughs at his misfortune.
"Alright your going home" said The Sargent
"Ooh... haha... ooh... haha" said Pip laughing
"Kikwalski your going to the front-line!… Hut! hut!t hut!, one.. two!… one!… two!..." said The Sargent
Pip with a nervous expression on his face salutes The Sargent before he sprightly marches into the front-line not knowing what pearls may lie ahead.
***End Of Flashback***
"That's amazing Grandpa, you were so brave for fighting in the front-line" said Alex
"Thank you, Alex" said Pip grabbing his suspenders.
"Someone had to tread behind enemy lines" said Beth
"I completed the mission unscathed" said Pip with great pride.
"Why did your Sargent call you by the wrong surname name?" asked Tommy
"That's a funny story Tommy, you see there was a typo when they were processing my Identification Card" said Pip
"Did you break your leg on purpose to get out of active duty?" asked Dil
"Of course I didn't Dil… It was an accident..." said Lou
"You did so faked that leg injury so you didn't have to go out on the front line!" said Pip
"Conflab it!… how many times must I tell everyone at this table… I tripped by accident" said Lou
"I went to the front line and successfully completed the mission with only my bare hands, the things I had witnessed would make your skin crawl..." said Pip
"Well La De Da… I fought in Pearl Harbour" said Lou as he slams his hands on the table.
"Actually Lou, you slept..." said Didi
"Don't think it's a good idea to bring that up right now" said Stu as he pats Didi's hand.
"How did you pass the screening process is beyond me!" said Pip
"I sent you a basket of blueberry muffins as an apology after the war ended" said Lou
"Those blueberry muffins were lousy, my three day old socks tasted better" said Pip
"Actually, to get the full flavour you should leave it for a week" said Allie
"Allie is certainly similar to Dil" said Didi as she whispers to Stu
"Pip and Allie eat their own socks?" asked Stu
"You take that back about my blueberry muffins, there a secret family recipe passed on from several generations" said Lou
"I don't remember you having any secret family recipe Pop" said Stu
"Dad... you and Mr Pickles are making a scene here" said Dave
"Can someone stop these two from arguing before one of them gets a hernia" said Stu
Dil let's out a very loud whistle to stop the argument from escalating any further.
"Ow! I think my ear drums have almost ruptured" said Beth
"I like the sound of Dils whistling, sounds like a swallow bird" said Allie
"I would take the bird to a vet if a swallow sounded like that" said Alex
"Anyway, I can see both our Grandpa's have an unsettled rivalry" said Dil
"You got that right Dil" said Lou
"I have an idea to settle this feud once and for all" said Dil
"Dil this really isn't is a good idea" said Didi
"Nonsense, I want to hear what he has to say" said Pip
"Is there anywhere in the house we could go too?" asked Dil
"Why don't we all go to the front room and discuss this further" said Alex
"Great idea, Alex" said Pip
Everyone heads into the front room, waiting in anticipation to see what kind of solution Dil has come up with to settle this old feud once and for all.
