For want of a nail, the kingdom was lost. Orihara Izaya and Heiwajima Shizuo meet in middle school, becoming better and worse for it.

Shizuo is a human who has a heart of pure gold, even with his out-of-control temper. Izaya is a cunning vampire who always repays people for helping him out, so they can't use him as blackmail later. Shizuo saves Izaya's life and Izaya wants to repay him by becoming his servant, but Shizuo doesn't think Izaya owes him at all. The two eventually compromise, but Izaya's not pleased.

Nobody can forget the damage that occurs when the ground doesn't settle right. Izaya certainly can't. Can't forget what it was like to watch Shizuo's chest being sliced apart. Can't forget the disappointed, melancholic expression that crossed Shinra's face, the doctor shaking his head as he uttered "the lung cancer has spread to his heart, there's nothing I can do now."

He looks so breakable - Shizuo thinks, as he keeps looking at the other, getting intoxicated by the bastard's smell with every terribly second, with every detail of Izaya's body, disturbingly sweet, delicious noises as he starts to move and pick up his usual rough pace, but he knows that's not true at all; the raven isn't as breakable as his skin may makes him look. /better inside

Shizuo got a new job as a security guard in one of Tokyo's biggest information collecting companies- the Orihara Enterprises that had recently shifted from Shinjuku to Ikebukuro. If Izaya had known the one thing his new client hated most was verbal rejection he would never have made the mistake of declining the job. Shizuo hates hospital food, but eats it anyway. Kasuka decides that his brother needs to have some kind of reward for his suffering.
