When Chris goes to her locker at the beginning of her shift, she looks at the photo of the young girl again. The girl smiles, but her eyes are dead.
"Hey Chris" Tan greets, she nods "how's it going?"
"Good" she lies "tired"
"Didn't go to bed early" Deacon asks "considering you don't leave here"
"I slept fine"
"Guys relax ok?" Hondo asks "we aren't on call today and shouldn't have too much of anything unless patrol calls" everyone nods
"I'm going to visit Isla" Chris says
"Can we come" Luca asks
"Of course" she replies with a small smile
Isla smiles when she sees Chris, but when she sees the guys, she backs up until she hits the wall
"Hey Isla" Chris says "this is my team, we have talked about them yesterday"
"Ye... yea" she says, eyes scanning the room
"It's alright" Chris says "they won't hurt you, we are all working to find Liv. That's Hondo"
"Hi Isla" Hondo says
"Deacon"
"Nice to meet you" Deacon greets
"Luca"
"Hey" Luca says, smiling
"Tan"
"How are you?" Tan asks
"And Street"
"Hey there" he greets
"Are you close?" Isla asks "to finding her?"
"We might be" Hondo says "the credit goes to Chris"
"It goes to the team" Chris argues
"Your boss says I should stay here until you guys find the suspects" Isla says
"Well he has good judgement" Chris says
"If you say so, then he must" Isla adds, smiling
"Tell us about yourself Isla" Deacon says "what do you like to do?"
"I play softball" Isla answers "and I have a dog named Champ" Chris smiles to herself, thinking back to her K-9
"Do you like school?" Hondo asks
"Very, I've always wanted to be a doctor"
"That's really amazing" Deacon says
"So you must like science?" Luca asks
"Yea, my favorite actually"
"What's your family like?" Tan asks
"Well..." Isla says looking at Chris, Chris frowns thinking
"What is it?"
"My dad died in a car crash and my mom used to work 24/7, until she couldn't. I live with my grandparents"
"I see" Hondo says. The group continues to talk, but it is clear to them Isla is uncomfortable. After the team workouts to kill time
"That was fun eh?" Hondo asks after they finish boxing
"Yeah" Tan says "I think we need a rematch"
"Are you just mad Chris beat your ass" Street teases
"You could say that again" Tan says laughing "right Chris?"
"Hey, where is Chris?" Hondo asks
"I think she went to go shower" Street says "wanted to beat us to it" the guys walk into the locker room and Chris is already done with her shower. Not realizing the guys entered, she goes to her locker and looks the picture of a young girl
"She's pretty" Street says coming over and looking over her shoulder
"Meh" Chris shrugs "I don't think so"
"What do you mean?" Street asks "looks like she's been through a rough patch, but she is still pretty"
"Not to me" Chris says firmly
"Real nice" Deacon mutters
"I can have my own opinion" Chris says
"So do I" Deacon says
"Not on this" Chris says
"Why not?" He replies, eyes narrowing
"Forget it" Chris says, leaving
"Deac" Hondo says "what is going on with you two, I thought you figured it out"
"Apparently not" Deacon says
The shift is about halfway over when Chris comes back
"Where have you been?" Hondo asks
"I went on a walk with Isla" Chris says, she has tears in her eyes
"Did something happen?" Tan asks
"No" Chris says, she goes to her locker and takes out the photo
"Chris are you-" Tan starts to ask when Chris rips it and drops it on the ground.
"I'm fine" she replies shortly "just need some space" she leaves and Street goes over and picks up the photo. He puts the two ends together and looks at it closely
"She is spiraling" Deacon says
"That's obvious" Tan replies "but why"
"Guys?" Street asks
"This whole case is freaking her out" Hondo says "I've never seen her like this"
"Guys" Street says a bit louder
"She hasn't even left HQ" Luca adds "I've never heard anything like it"
"Guys!" Street says loud and clear, the guys turn to him "this is Chris" they crowd in, looking at the photo
"Are you sure?" Luca asks "doesn't look like her" but he looks more closely. The scars make it hard to tell, but you can make out Chris' hazel eyes under all that black and blue
"Oh god" Tan says "no wonder why she got heated, that's her"
"What happened to her?" Street asks
"I don't know" Luca replies looking at the picture "from the looks of it, she's a teenager. That means it happened before she met any of us"
"Well it triggered a reaction" Hondo says "but what is it?"
"Maybe it's just the case?" Luca asks "Chris is always on top of sexual assault cases. Maybe this hit a bit harder?"
"I think it's more than that" Deacon argues
"What do you think it is then?"
"Isla" Deacon says "makes sense doesn't it?"
"Deacon that's a pretty big assumption" Hondo argues
"She is the only thing that has changed in Chris' life. She didn't drink at the bar, this case is freaking her out, maybe Isla said something" Deacon pushes back
"That's a big conclusion Deacon" Hondo says "Chris did say it wasn't Isla"
"And we also know people lie, we all do it" he argues "and to be honest, Chris is a good lier when it comes to her personal life" Deacon is answered by silence. Street tapes the photo back together and places in his locker, planning to give it back to Chris
Deacon knows he shouldn't but he goes to see Isla. He finds her talking to Dr. Wendy and her office
"Hey Deacon, what brings you here?" She asks
"I was wondering if I could talk to Isla privately?" He asks "won't take long"
"Of course" she says, leaving
"Dr. Wendy is really nice" Isla says smiling "I can see why Chris said she's good to talk to. Chris is amazing"
"She is" Deacon says, sitting in a chair "listen Isla, did Chris tell you about anything that is bothering her?"
"No" Isla lies, trusting her gut
"Are you sure?" Deacon asks again "Chris is burning herself out and I don't think you want that"
"I don't" Isla assures
"Isla" Deacon says coming a bit closer causing Isla to finch "it's ok I won't hurt, surely Chris told you that"
"She has" she replies "but Chris also understands what I've been through"
"Isla, Chris is hurting right now. She doesn't admit it when she needs help" Deacon presses "I believe you want her to be happy, so please, was there something you said or did that might have upset her?"
"No" Isla answers "I really don't know-"
"Hey Isla!" Chris greets walking in "hey Deacon"
"Chris" Isla says running over and hugging her "how was your day?"
"It's been good" Chris says "how was Dr. Wendy?"
"She's really good" Isla says
"I'm glad you like her. She's a great person to talk to" Chris says, smiling
"I'll leave you guys alone" Deacon says edging towards the door
"Why don't you ask her now?" Isla asks
"Ask me what?" Chris asks, smile fading and looking at Deacon
"If I did something to upset you" Isla asks looking at her
"What?" Chris says, she looks at Deacon "you asked that?"
"I didn't, right?"
"No Chiquita" Chris says as calmly as she can manage "you are the best part of my day"
"Phew" Isla says hugging Chris tighter
"I'll talk to you later Deacon" Chris says coldly, Deacon leaves closing the door. He walks down the hall and knows he is in trouble
