"You're not coming," Octavia repeated once again to the child standing in front of her.
"But I've been training-"
"You're still in training and war is no place for a child," she said, sighing at how stubborn Ethan could be. She didn't want to pull out this card but she decided that was the only way. "I told Jaha I would protect you and do so I will. You stay," she said before walking out of the bunker and into the bright clearing where the army was gathered. There were a small amount of warriors gathered, no more than 100, but with the element of surprised Octavia thought they could take them.
She had wasted time dealing with Ethan and the sun had already risen, so she didn't have time for a grand speech. Instead she simply grabbed a pack and made her way to the front.
She turned around facing her people, scanning the warriors until she landed on Indra. She nodded her encouragement and Octavia took a breath before speaking. "We fight today so we can live tomorrow," she said before turning around and beginning the March.
——
Somewhere about an hour in, Bellamy had broken through her guards and approached her. She had allowed it, and he had promptly apologized for saying the things he did, to which she accepted. She understood him, he hadn't been there the six years they were trapped in the bunker, he hadn't experienced what she had.
And so, to make the March more bearable they had talked. He had explained the past years, everything that had happened in them. She felt he was leaving something out but decided not to press, after all she wasn't being totally honest either. She planned to tell him, only she wanted to wait until everyone was here. She may not be able to tell her people but she could tell her friends. She trusted them, of course she had strange dreams of them betraying her but she was determined not to give into these strange fears.
Now, as they set up camp for the night, she found herself relaxing into the conversation, no longer tense as they talked. She found herself smiling and laughing with him. The moment was interrupted by a mechanical buzz, and all eyes turned in the directions, seeing a faint light.
"Prepare yourself," Octavia hollard before rushing over to where it was, her warriors standing behind her. However, as it drew closer she was able to see a faint shape, a shape she recognized. "Hold," she said to the people who had aimed and were ready to shoot.
Miller looked at her questioningly, "why can you see what it is?" He asked, astonished as no one else could seem to make it out.
"It's the rover," she said, looking towards Clarke. "I think your nightblida found us," she said, to which Clarkes eyes widened, confirming her suspicions.
She had known Clarke was not alone in the valley, after all she would have gone mad after the years. And, she had many strange visions of a girl and Clarke, she assumed the girl was a night blood and perhaps that's why the commanders were showing her. That's why she had Gaia come with her, she had told Gaia her suspicions and what she had seen, and also expressed her need for an heir. Octavia knew she wasn't much longer for this world, that some way or another she wouldn't survive whatever was to come. Of course she didn't know what was coming, just another riddle she would have to solve. Still, she knew the girl had to be protected as the last true nightblida.
Only she hadn't expected her to be so young. As the girl ran out of the car and into Claire's arms, her eyes widened with the realization. In her visions she had looked older. She felt bad that the girl would have to carry her burden at such a young age, and felt reminded of herself at that age.
She was drawn from her thoughts as the Azgeda spy ran to her brother, embracing with him passionately. Her lips curled in disgust, so that was what he had been dancing around, she thought angrily.
"Traitor," the voice she had long since blocked out whispered. She shook her head to rid himself of him and seeing Monty waving smiled and waved back. Harper jumped out after him and smiled at her, Octavia returning it. She made her way over to them followed by Indra, Miller and Gaia. Gaias eyes instantly found the girl and she looked at Octavia. She had warned her that the grounders who didn't know she was commander may follow the night blood, but the girl was much younger than she had imagined. Octavia gave her a knowing look before walking over to where the spy and her brother were.
"Octavia-" echo started but was interrupted by the girl whom she addressed raising her hand to silence her.
"In the conclave, you went behind your king's back for the sake of your people." She started. Echo sighed and nodded, she had done that, and it was something she deeply regretted. "You threw away all the rules, your honor, your home, all so your king could win."
"I-" she started but was interrupted again.
"I wasn't done, spy," Octavia spat before calming herself down. "You threw away everything you had for your people, breaking the rules, yes. But in war there are no rules. It's kill or be killed, and you chose to kill not for yourself but for your people. Such loyalty is honorable." Octavia clenched her teeth as she continued. "Years ago I banished you in memory of Roan, but the world we are in now isn't the same we left. Every last human has an important role in this and to ignore your use and ability would be foolish. You can stay, but make one more mistake and I will personally banish you to the afterlife," Octavia said, watching the womens eyes. Her eyes widened ever so slightly before taking their original shape. She nodded and bowed to Octavia, thanking her. Bellamy gave Octavia a gratefully look and she sighed. "I didn't do this for you Bellamy, I did this for my people." She said before crossing to where Clarke and Monty were discussing something.
"You did it because you're weak," the voice whispered in her ear, but she ignored it once again.
When she made it to where they were she hugged Monty tightly, glad to see her friend after such a long time. She then proceeded to hug Harper, smiling at her before turning to Clarke.
"I don't think you've introduced me to your friend," she said, smiling down at the wide eyed girl. She looked up at Octavia as if she were a god of sorts, utterly enthralled by her.
Clarke shifted ever so slightly, her body language becoming slightly rigid. "This is-"
"Maddy," Octavia interrupted her, bending down to be level with the child. "I have heard a lot about you," she said, smiling sweetly. Maddy smiled back, seeming slightly nervous. "The girl who hid from the flamekeepers from her spot under the floor." She continued, noticing the shock in the eyes of those around her. She decided if there was anytime to tell her friends it was now, after all she would need their help and guidance.
"How did you-" Clarke began, only to be interrupted again.
"I used to be like you, my mother hid me under the floor much as you were simply because I was born. Only, it's not a crime to exist in this world, it's a privilege. And because of this privilege we have a responsibility to do everything we can to ensure our people, all people, have the ability to live in peace." She said, noticing the way the small girl's eyes seemed to glow. Octavia looked back to Gaia, asking a question with her eyes and her teacher nodded. And so, she told them all the truth. "Not many nights ago I myself took the responsibility of the flames, and the commanders showed you to me. You will be a great leader, one with a kind heart and a strong will." She said, not knowing whether it was true or not. "It is an unfair amount of responsibility for a child to be forced to bear, and time may not be on my side." Octavia admitted to which the girl tilted her head. "Still, I know you will be able to lead Wonkru to a future of you making." Octavia said before Clarke finally had enough and cut in.
"You're not Heda, that's impossible," she said, simply shaking her head. Bellamy looked at her and sighed.
"She's right, you don't need to lie-"
"She's not lying," Gaia, who had been silent for the whole time cut in. "The night before you came for us she stole the flame from my corridors and took it, we tried to cut it out but…"
"It's probably best if we show you," Miller cut through, grabbing a dagger and sweeping Octavia's hair out of the way.
"Wow wait-" before Octavia had time to finish her sentence Indra had grabbed the knife and slashed Miller's palms. "Don't touch Heda," she hissed before letting him go, miller scowling at her.
"He's probably right," Octavia said before grabbing the knife. However, she didn't like the idea of damaging the flame. Instead she took the knife and placed it against the palm of her hand, slicing deeply through her skin spilling her scarlet blood.
"How is that supposed to- '' Clarke asked before stopping as she saw the steam begin to come from Octavia's wound. When it had healed, the cut was completely gone, replaced by fresh skin.
"Wait, the flame gave you healing powers?!" Miller asked, looking at her wrist. Octavia laughed at his tone and shook her head.
"No that was there before the flame, I'm not really sure where it came from but when it started that's when I guess the flame started calling to me, it's pretty confusing I'm not going to lie but-"
"Cool," the small child said, enthralled, staring at Octavia's wrist in awe. Octavia looked at her and smiled before turning to Clarke. Clarke seemed to be considering something, but before she had time to say what it was they were interrupted by a blood curdling scream.
—————
When they arrived on the scene, Octavia saw one of her men, originally skycru, shaking on the ground. At first glance he seemed to be seizing, until she looked closer and realized he was not in fact moving but something inside him was. There was something inside him that was starting desperately to get out, slithering through him until it made its way to his stomach where it began shaking.
The man screamed in pain and Octavia could see him fighting for his life. It reminded her of Adam, after the acid frog happened. She had been there, watching from afar as Clarke had granted him the sweet release that came with death. Staring at her comrade, she realized she owed him the same. She grabbed her knife, bending down beside him and staring into his eyes. He looked up at her, eyes glistening with pain yet managed to say a single phrase.
"Please," without hesitation Octavia drove the knife into his neck, delivering and swift and painless death. Not long after had she done it, his intestines exploded, worms crawling out from his body. She jumped back, quickly ordering everyone out of the tent and setting it on fire, killing the worms and destroying the body.
"What was that?" She asked Clarke angrily, assuming she should know.
"I'm not sure, the radiation caused many new species to form and I suppose that's one of them." She said addressing Octavia. "Everyone check your body for punctures, holes of any kind, anyway they would get in. The warriors began to do so, as did Octavia. She was almost done, checking her ankles when she found a whole, steaming and healing itself as she looked at it.
"Clarke," she said, distressed, truly fearful. She could almost feel it inside of her. Immediately Clarke was there, placing a tourniquet over her ankle to keep it from gaining access to the other parts of her body.
"Quick, bring her to a hut", Clarke ordered, the people immediately grabbing Octavia and hauling her over as she tried not to scream. It was truly disgusting, she thought as she saw it move and felt the pain under her skin.
"I'm going to need to cut it out," Clarke said, taking the dagger Octavia had used and sanitizing it before bringing it to her calf.
"Just do it," Octavia winsed, closing her eyes to brace for more pain. Only she didn't feel the pain, she wasn't even aware of what was happening, all sound seemed to be drowned out by an ear splitting roar. She look around and saw fire, so much fire.
She was back in the village, Lincoln by her side, standing as she looked over the rubbles of Ton DC. She remembered this day, for it was the day she realized just what it meant to be a leader. It was they day Clarke had sacrificed her friend, mother, and more innocents to save her people and stop mount weather. It was the day the mountain men showed just what power they had by dropping a-. Octavia blinked, while not really but if she could have she would have. It was a warning.
