Chapter seven: ascension.

Octavia bolted upright, her senses sluggish and her mind slow. Looking around she found herself back in the bunker, in the infirmary room, all alone save for the monitor that was beeping slowly. How many times in the last week had she awoken to this room? For her it was far to many, as a leader she couldn't be weak.

Octavia rose from the bed and pulled the sticky things from her skin. The minotor began it's flatline song, it's beeping a dull pitch in the background of her world.

Octavia didn't know how long she had been out, only that it must have been a while for her to be back at camp and alone. She had the strange twisting feeling in her gut that something had happened, something bad. Following that feeling, she made her way to the pit, the center of wonkru activity.

There was a light buz of noise, but it wasn't happy or upbeat. It had eerie undertones, sound waves she couldn't hear but sense. Her heart beat faster as she drew closer, her legs wobbling slightly. Only when she opened the door did the charger become joyful, perhaps that wasn't the correct term, and the strange uneasiness fade.

Gaia stood in the middle of the pit, surrounded by 15 of the wonkru children. It must have been a training hour, because the outside of the pits were clear and the only weapons were wooden. As soon as she entered all eyes turned to her, Gaias widening in surprise and relaxing in relief. Without saying a word she made her way down into the pit, upon entering Ethan ran up to hug her tightly.

"I was worried," he said, to which she ruffled his hair and giggled. "Please, it takes more than that to kill me," she said before turning to Gaia.

Gaia bowed, and so did the other children, including Madi, who Octavia just noticed had joined the training sessions. She smiled at Gaia, who still seemed slightly worried, and looked over the children.

"What has Seda been teaching you?" She asked, to which they responded by joyfully explaining and demonstrating all they had learned. October was overcome with not only a sense of pride but joy. She saw the children fight and giggle and was instantly brought back to when she was that age. The moment however ended far too soon as Gaia told the children to run drills while she discussed something with Octavia, pulling her outside and into the office.

The office was empty, as it usually was during the training period, leaving Octavia and her teacher to talk alone. As soon as the door closed, whatever happiness Octavia had been feeling vanished, and her face returned to the unfeeling frown she wore so often. "How long was I asleep?" She asked, noticing how Gaia winced.

"You were in a coma for five days, the council began to worry you may not wake, as did your people," she explained. It was now Octavia's turn to wince. Why had she been out so long, what had happened in that time. She remembered having a dream, only couldn't recall what of.

"Well, I'm back now and-" she began but was interrupted by Gaias worried words.

"It's not that simple Octavia," she said in a hushed voice despite the fact that they were indeed alone. "After the retreat, many of the people who weren't there or who don't know what happened they…" Octavia gave her a pointed look as if to say get to the point. "Many of your people have been calling for your replacement," she said, Octavia's eyes wideing with shock. "The flamekeepers know the girl is a nightblida and they want her to be commander." Octavia but her lip, angered by the fact that things could go so south in five days. "They think I have the flame and are demanding I return it to them." She said, shaking her head.

"If you told them, at least the other flamekeepers I am Heda," Octavia said, still upset that her teacher kept this a secret from the flamekeepers who were sworn to protect her.

"It doesn't matter it's too late now, if we were to tell them you were Heda they would refuse to believe it, it would be impossible to prove. The delegates have been holding them off for now but finding a solution will take time."

"We don't have enough time, if you recall we are at war with an enemy who has the power of the skies. There's no way I am going to win without my people's full support and there is no way I'm going to get that without them knowing I am Heda." Octavia paused for a moment before deciding. "Announce the succession of a new commander at sunset, I will figure out how to prove my legitimacy."

————

Octavia hadn't figured out how to prove her legitimacy, she hadn't even the slightest idea. She had meditated all day and still no ideas had come. She had been unable to find even the slightest connection with any of her predecessors and as she stood behind the metal door that led to the pit, listening to the horn that had been blowing for the past hour and the footsteps of worried and intrigued people arriving, she felt utterly screwed.

She had already performed the ritual of the ascension and her delegates as witness, all she needed to do was prove she was Heda to all of her people who gathered in this room. All she needed to do was somehow go out there and someway convince them that-

The blooming of the horn stopped, and with it the shuffling silenced. Though Octavia couldn't see what was happening she knew she was running out of time

——

Gaia stood in front of the hundreds of people gathered before her. The doors were open and the hallways lined with onlookers, almost all of wonkru present. As soon as the blowing of the horn stopped, the people fell into an eerie silence.

She had held a meeting with the delegates prior to this and they had discussed how this would go down. If Octavia could prove that she was the commander, wonkru would bow to and follow her as their rightful leader. If not, well, all the delegates as well as Gaia would be executed by their own people. Taking a deep breath and looking at the delegates for reassurance, she began her speech.

"Wonkru, you know why you have been gathered here today. Though it may feel like lifetimes ago you were last ruled by a commander, you remember this as do I. May of you, outraged by the retreat, have cried for your queen to be replaced. Those who were there have supported her unwavering, but the vast majority of you, after being subject to her rule, are outraged. She was not a true commander, and only a commander could truly lead you." Mourning rose again, much louder this time. "We come here to recognize the ascension of a true commander, for your cries of anger have been heard," there weren't cheers or grumbles of disapproval, just silence. Gaia turned to the flamekeepers to adr ws them. "You are aware as am I that the last nightblida is among us, that she has come from the valley with Clarke and you wish for her to be commander." She said, to which they nodded. "Only, what you have failed to realize is that on the night the flame was stolen hardly a week ago, a commander ascended. Me and the deflagrates kept this from you for fear of what your reaction would be when you realized just who this taker of the flame was, only now, having no choice but to tell you, that is what we do." She said before motioning for the guards to open the door.

The room was quiet as Octavia entered, her head lowered to the ground. She was wearing the robes of the past commanders, her face streaked with blood, red blood. When she looked at her people and they realized who she was, they were outraged. Cries of blasphemy and kill the queen were the only sounds heard above the angered screams.

"Octavia Kon wonkru may not have the blood, but still the commanders have chosen her to inherit the flame, they have allowed her to survive as no red blood has ever been able to and taken her to be their savior." She said, crossing over to Octavia. "This is why we didn't tell you," she then explained but her words fell on deaf ears. The flamekeepers who were on the inside of the pit drew their weapons angered at the apparent blasphemy. Octavia's guards, Miller and Indra pointed their guns along with the other skycru soldiers. The delegates became poised and ready for someone, anyone to make a movement.

The first to move was Octavia. It wasn't for a weapon, or to charge in any way. Instead she kneeled. Her knees, though covered in armor, still felt bruised as they hit the floor. Her eyes closed tightly as she repeated a phrase in her mind, calling out for anyone who could hear. "I, Octavia Blake, your commander, ask you to come forth and show yourself to me." She said, over and over again in her mind. Slowly, figures began to emerge from the fog and draw towards her. As they came closer, Octavia was able to make out their faces and recognize who they were. Leading the charge was Shadheda, who looked at her as if to say "your welcome," as he seemed to lead the others to her. Behind him were faces she didn't recognize, some she did from Indra or Gaias lessons, and one she did from her journeys. Lexa walked proudly directly behind shadheda, marching to her side, someone who Octavia instantly knew as Becca, the first commander. They drew closer before her, and as Shadheda sallied up to her he reached his hand out. Octavia grabbed it, pulling him through her mind and doing this likewise with Lexa. She reached her hand out to Becca but the women shook her head, drawing over to Octavia and placing a hand on her shoulder. The other hooded figures did the same and Octavia felt immense power course through her veins. Her blood began to boil and her skin began to steam, however she kept her eyes closed chanting the phrase, the prayer. "I, Octavia Blake, your commander, ask you to come forth and show yourself to me."

"I, Octavia Blake, your commander, command you to come forth and show yourself to them." Her eyes opened to see her people staring at her in shocked aww.

———

Indra saw Octavia bow before her people, she saw her close her eyes and heard her whisper a phrase which she couldn't make out. And then, the strangest thing happened, which considering all she had seen Octavia do was saying something. Her whole skin began to steam, much like when her wounds healed themselves, only it was much more intense. She saw something begin ripping under Octavia's skin and ran towards her, fearing something may be happening. Only she couldn't make it, the steam grew, more and more emanating from her, scalding hot, and Gaia was soon unable to see. The sound of the steam was soon replaced with the coughing of Wonkru, along with the view of it slowly dispersing.

As soon as it was gone, Gaia, along with everyone else, opened their eyes. Octavia was no longer alone, on either her right kneeled a man and on her left a woman. The first thing she realized was that these people were naked, along with Octavia whose robes layer broken on the floor. Indra quickly ran forward and offered Octavia her outer robe, covering her before looking to the people on either side of her. She noticed that tattoos each of them had, the markings on their backs and up their necks. The scars on their body, the scar on the back of their neck. They were commanders. As soon as realizing this she recognized the woman, her brown hair falling loose along her shoulders and her eyes slowly opening, squinting at the light. She ran over and took the robe of a confused flame keeper, throwing it over Lexas body and seeing her slowly lift her gaze to the crowd. The man did the same, still indecent and Gaia quickly remedied that, before seeing the scar through his right eye. She backed up slowly as he grinned maliciously at her.

"Hello flamekeepers," he said, causing Indra to whir around to face the voice that haunted her nightmares.

She saw him standing up, body hardly covered in the robe, and saw the death glare he gave her daughter. Before she could react, Octavia slowly rose to her feet, facing her people.

"I suppose there's nothing I can say to convince you to believe me, so I have called your past commanders here in hopes that you may listen to them," she said in a strong voice though her body was filled with exhaustion. The silent room waited, eyes fixated on the scene unfolding in front of them, they were frozen with fear of confusion. That was, all of them but Claire. She rushed forward to the girl at Octavia's left and grabbed her from the ground, examining her face before pulling her in for a long embrace.

Pulling back she looked into her eyes, "is it really you?" She asked in awe as she stared into the eyes of her love. Lexa nodded, pulling Clarke in for a kiss which seemed to further the shock of the people around them.

"I'm pretty sure Heda didn't bring you back so you could make out with the sky bitch," Shadheda said, causing the eyes to turn to him. He then stepped towards Octavia, sighing before looking out on her people. "I'm sure you have all heard the stories of who I am and what I did," he turned to Indra, "some of you may even have lived through my wrath," he turned to the flamekeepers. "I have experienced the command of Lexa and Clarke, and have shared the memories with my previous predecessor. Never had one of us been as powerful as Octavia." He looked at her and she gave a nod before he smiled maliciously and looked back. "None of you deserve her, hell I hate all of you and I've only experienced some of what the girl has endured. I've only seen some of the things she has done for you as she is too stubborn to open her mind to me." He said, to which Octavia winced. "I saw the dark year tho, how she became a monster to save you and you hated her for it. She bore the weight of your sins, forced you so you wouldn't have to live with your choice. I've seen much of her life through her eyes since she became Heda, seen what she has done in the span of a week and yet you would still want her replaced. If I were commander, I would slit all of your throats and be done with it."

Octavia hissed behind him and he sighed before continuing. "But I'm not, Octavia is," he said before facing her and kneeling. Everyone followed, whispering the word Heda until it grew louder into praise.

Octavia should have felt relieved, the truth was out and her people were here, only she didn't have time.

"Great," she rasped slightly, "now that you know, trust the decisions I make from this point on. Return to your stations and rest because the moment may come when I ask you to March again." She said, dismissing everyone.

Her people left and within minutes the room was cleared, all who remained was the flamekeepers, her guards, her friends, and her coalition. Oh and of course her predecessors.

"So what's the plan, Heda," her brother said, causing her to roll her eyes. "The plan is to take down the eye, I'm sure monty has been working on it and he will show me what he has done. Shadheda will organize the army," he smiled and she corrected herself "under Indra's orders, and Lexa and Clarke will work with the people and maintain peace as many may see me as an excuse to fight amongst themselves." She said before pausing. "Gaia I want you with the girl to keep her safe, she's in my corridors as Clarke and I agreed that was the best place until this settles down." No one asked questions, and soon she was standing next to monty as he showed her the computers. She didn't have time for her people to question her, she needed to make it to that god damn valley.

Are you sure this is a good idea?" Dioza asked as she saw the people react to her messages. She had just announced to Wonkru that those who wished to defect could board the ship at nightfall, and none of them seemed to bite.

Kane himself was confused. The people who had for years been ready to overthrow Octavia now seemed to stand by her much stronger even though she had retreaded. Still, he assumed it was just for face and that they would in fact come.

"Trust me, I know her," still, a small amount of doubt was felt by him. He had expected her to attempt to kill him and she hadn't, he had expected her to March yet she retreated. How much did he really know her.

Ik it feels like I should have ended it better but whatever I had another coming so like yk. anyway byeeeeee.
