With her phone in hand, she anxiously dialed the only number she could think of. The nightmare on her brain led her to think of the worst case scenarios, and in this particular one, that Shinichi isn't returning because of an illness. It made total sense to her. Her thoughts running wild, and memories flooding her brain, she began to think. The time Hattori-kun came to challenge Shinichi, the first time she had seen him since their day at Tropical Land. Once she saw him then she believed she had been wrong, her premonition about something terrible happening to Shinichi had been wrong. He was there to prove it. That was the first indication to her. Then the school play. When he had surprised her and appeared in front of everyone...and almost kissed her. She held her phone to her chest as she blushed, reminiscing of the almost kiss they shared. She sighed as she had flashbacks of the terror she felt when he had fallen to the floor in front of her, similar to her nightmare. The thought kept floating in her mind, he had something to tell her. Was it possible? Could it be? That was what he wanted to tell her...but he had run away again. It was now, or never. Instead of memories flooding her head, she decided to take matters into her own hands.
Swallowing hard, and her heart beating out of her chest, she held the phone to her ear. She had high hopes that the other line would change from a ring to a voice, and would be able to settle some of her nerves. Feeling frazzled, she almost hung up before the other line answered.
"Hello?" A familiar, and sweet voice answered. The sound of his mother instantly began to calm her. They must know something.
"H-hello...is this Shinichi's mother?" Ran asked shyly. Of Course she knew it was, but she wasn't sure what to say.
"Ah! Ran-chan! How are you? How's Conan-chan?" Always friendly, almost without a worry in the world. This had been a factor in her thinking. Would she be this calm if she knew something was wrong...or...is Shinichi in America with them?
"I'm fine...and Conan-kun is fine too…" Hesitating, she took a glance out the window to see all the other high schoolers walk by. She knew she would be late, but by this point she was considering ditching anyway. Her next stop was the Kudo mansion, maybe it held some answers.
"What is it, Ran-chan? You seem distraught." The mother of the detective questioned, Ran had never called out of the blue like this. Shinichi's father walked in, and realized Yukiko was on the phone and lifted an eyebrow.
"Who is it?" He mouthed to her, wondering who could be calling at this hour.
"Ran-chan." She mumbled back in a hushed tone. At that, Yusaku crossed his arms. Aware of what she could possibly be calling about, he sighed.
Yukiko's attention was back on the phone in her hand, but she hadn't heard a response. Ran's hesitation was obvious, as she called before she had thought of what to say.
"I-i was wondering…" She began, swallowing hard and fighting back tears. The memories of her nightmare flooding back into her mind.
"About Shin-chan?" His mother answered, frowning. She knew there was something on Ran's mind about her son. Neither of them had seen him, in his own physical form, in so long. Conan had been around, astute as ever. But in Ran's eyes, and as far as she knew, not one in the same person.
"Y-yes…" Her tears flowed silently, with a slight crack in her voice. She brought her hand to her face to wipe them away.
"Is he in L.A with you?" Ran finally worked up the courage to ask, almost afraid to know the answer.
Yukiko bit her lip, and glanced at her husband, unsure of what to say. He closed his eyes, and shook his head. Giving his wife her response, a non-verbal "no." They weren't lying, but they weren't sure what answer Shinichi would've wanted them to give her.
"No, Ran-chan. He isn't here." The mother sighed. Her heart break was similar to that of Ran's. Missing the one person she held closest to her heart wasn't easy for her either. Almost as if she were losing him, too. Although his physical form was there, major parts of him were missing.
"I-i see...Have you seen him recently? Has he...visited?" Ran held her phone close to her, praying that they would say they had. Proof that he was fine. He could travel, and Ran was just catching him on some bad days.
Yukiko wasn't sure what to say. To the younger woman she loved like a daughter, and one day hoped to be married to her only son, she held no words. Her own heartbreak was beginning to distract her.
Shinichi's father removed the phone from his wife's hand and brought it to his own. He decided to intervene, and hopefully renew Ran's faith in his son.
"Hello, Ran-kun." The author began, taking a step away from his wife. Aware of the situation, he decided to tell a small lie.
"Shinichi was recently in the United States, New York to be exact. The case he is on brought him overseas temporarily, and we had a short visit. We were already in the city when he had called us." The author began, quick witted as always.
"We aren't aware of his current whereabouts, as the case doesn't allow him to disclose it." He continued firmly. With obvious care in his voice, he went on.
"I know you miss him, Ran-kun. We are certain he is thinking of you, too. Have faith. It's Shinichi we are talking about."
On the other end, Ran's tears were beginning to dry as she silently nodded.
"Yes…" She agreed. They were right, it was Shinichi afterall. The one person she thought she knew better than herself.
"I had a nightmare about Shinichi...that he's sick." Ran started, turning away from the window. "Was he...sick when he was in New York?" Slightly embarrassed to ask, but she needed to know.
Yukiko's eyes widened slightly in shock, she had caught the mother off guard. She was fortunate her husband was around, even as an actress her improv wasn't perfect.
"He seemed fine to us." His lies continued. He knew this phone call would warrant one to his son. "Maybe Shinichi will give you a call, and you can discuss what you're feeling with him." The older former detective finished with, using this as a way to get off the phone and give his son a call.
"Thank you…" She smiled through dry tears, feeling slightly relieved. She knew where her next phone call would take her, and it would be a difficult one.
"Bye, Ran-chan!" Yukiko called out, as her husband hung up the phone.
The couple looked at eachother, their words in unison.
"Shinichi's in trouble."
