Chapter 3: Kyoto International School
The land of Kyoto looked beautiful from the window of G Corporation's private yet. It was so heartwarming to watch that Ling Xiaoyu almost forgot she was actually there for a secret mission. She looked around the cabin. Anna was sitting right in front of her, very concentrated in her laptop and Panda was sleeping in her own seat, not concerned at all about the uncomfortable situation.
"We will land in ten minutes," Anna said, breaking the silence. It was just an hour and a half trip, but the awkwardness made it feel longer for the chinese fighter. "So, tell me. Have you been to Kyoto before? "
"Uh, no. We were supposed to go for our school trip at the end of the spring break."
"Well, you better not be expecting this to be a pleasure trip. You are here to work and I won't take anything but perfection on this mission." Xiaoye felt like she was getting scolded in advance. She hated when she was looked down for those who were supposed to trust her, like she were so stupid to understand a simple command. She wanted to respond to Anna, but she knew it was not wise. She was not in an ally ground anymore, in order to get the basic amount of respect, she knew she had to prove herself first, even if it was to the G Corps.
The jet landed in a hangar, where a waggon was waiting for them. Without losing time, they got in and in less than twenty minutes they arrived at a classic japanese style residence. The place consisted of a small house surrounded by a beautiful japanese garden. The harmony of the residence contrasted dramatically with the four 30 meters high metal walls securing the area.
"Let's not waste any more time," Anna said as she opened the house's door "Shall we begin?"
Xiaoyu took off her shoes and entered the house followed by Panda. They sat on some cushions and waited for Anna's explanations. The assassin turned on a big screen placed in a wall and a video of Kyoto International School appeared.
"You'll be attending Kyoto International School, KIS for short. One of the most esteemed international schools in Kyoto."
"I remember you saying I have to make contact with someone attending that school. But why can't you get in touch with him directly?"
"Because this is not a normal institution. Affluent families from around the world send their children here. Security is airtight, making access to personal records impossible. Or, at least, almost," With a snap of her fingers, the video changed to an image of a long list of names, most of them were blurry and almost impossible to read. "With the help of our best hackers, we were able to track the list of new students who entered KIS, and between all of them, the name Shin Kamiya appeared." With another snap, the line of the list with that name expanded, followed by the photo previously shown at Mishima High.
Xiaoyu looked at the picture carefully, it was a good-looking boy, with his brown hair almost covering his eyes. His expression was serious, but it was possible to see that, under the surface, he was gentle.
"Very Handsome, don't you like him?" Anna said with a teasing tone. Xiaoyu justo looked at the other side, it was going to be hard to get used to her new "boss" mocking her like she was a child. "This was the last photo ever captured of him, around three years ago, before one day, out of nowhere, he disappeared," The young martial artist gasped almost inaudibly to that statement. Being in the tournaments had taught her about the dangerous implications around suddenly disappearing, and seeing another young guy in the same situation as her dear friend was very hard to hear. "Since then, there has been no picture, register, or any kind of information about Shin Kamiya being around, not in Japan nor any other country until three months ago."
"You are saying he just reappeared all of sudden?"
"That is, my little doll, what you are here to find out," The assassin put a small metal casket with G Corps logo in front of them. She opened it and inside it was a cellphone, some wireless earphones and a strange device that looked like a little box with a small screen and a phial attached to it. "The best approach will be sending a student of our own. Find out who this boy named Shin Kamiya is, gather some of his DNA and put it in this scanner. It has his genetic code already registered, so if the samples match, the screen will go green."
"Wait! What kind of DNA do I have to collect?"
"Blood would be the best option," Anna smiled with a sinister look. Xiaoyu was getting creeped out about this mission. "But a lock of hair or saliva should be enough. Once you can confirm he is our man, get in contact with me immediately and your job will be done. Pretty easy, isn't it?"
The chinese student took a moment to think. It didn't sound like a very dangerous job, but one to be discreet. She was not under qualified for the task, yet she had some problems with the little amount of information she was receiving.
"But, who is this guy and why is the G Corporation so eager to find him?" She dared to ask.
"That is none of your business," With a final snap, the screen shutted down. Suddenly, Anna's face gained a slightly severe tone, enough to make her new employer uncomfortable and put Panda alert. "The only thing you should be concerned about is doing exactly what I told you to do. Anything else is just wasting our time. Was I clear?"
"Yes ma'am." Xiaoyu answered tensely.
"Find him and I'll take care of the rest. Now," She looked at the clock hanging in the room. It was almost noon, friday. "Your last period starts at one P.M. You will have three hours to find as much as you can. International schools don't open on Saturdays, so your time to make contact is now. And don't communicate with me inside the building, you have to be discreet and unnoticeable," And with a quick movement, she opened the door and pointed outside. "You can go now."
The KIS buildings were as big and majestic as the images showed, with modern architecture painted in an immaculate white color surrounded by full secured walls. Security didn't stay behind its promises. To enter, a personal school ID needed to be scanned, followed by a fingerprint and eye scanning. Only those who were previously registered could enter freely. New students had to fill the corresponding registration personally. If a problem was found, security guards would take charge.
Ling Xiaoyu finished her registration in the main building and was assigned to class 2A, which was in the east building. She had gotten rid of her sailor uniform from Mishima High in order to not raise any attention. Instead, she was wearing a simple white shirt with a plaid light blue skirt and a red tie. It still looked like she was in a uniform, but not from any particular school, so it helped to keep her low profile. At some point, she considered also getting rid of her emblematic pigtails, but she refused at the last minute. After all, she always had a reason to wear them. As Wang Jinrei, her master and grandfather, once told her "Your innocent appearance guards your true power." And he was right. Ever since she was little, her childish looks had always made their enemies low their guards around her, foolishly assuming such a kawaii girl could never have what it takes. She used to get offended by people underestimating her for being too young, but her grandfather taught her to embrace it, the same way people underestimate him for being too old. She would let them assume what they wanted of her, and then she would prove them wrong by her actions, and by that time it would be too late for her adversaries.
Surprisingly for her, the atmosphere inside the school was not oppressive at all. There were young boys and girls talking and laughing all over the place, no one was wearing any uniform, and everybody was helping to make some lovely and expensive decorations for the KISFES, the school's own cultural festival. This place looks like a giant daycare for rich kids. What kind of people really come here? But before being able to figure it out, she had to attend her first class of the day: Kyoto History 1.
Xiaoyu shyly opened the door while introducing herself "Good evening, um, sorry for being late, my name is Ling Xiaoyu, I just got transferred here.." But when she finally entered the class, she noticed there was no student whatsoever, only a teacher looking at the window.
"Ah, yes, I was informed a new student will come here today," Said the teacher in a very dramatic voice. "I was expecting you, Ling Xiaoyu." He turned around in an elegant spin, revealing to the young student her new teacher was not a normal person at all.
Violet! Xiaoyu refrained from talking out loud. She had seen this man before, about a year ago. He entered the fourth Iron Fist Tournament, presenting himself as the CEO of Violet Systems, a company specialized in the manufacture of androits. He was so outlandish that nobody left that year's competition without hearing about him. But his appearance was different now, his hair and outfit used to be completely violet (giving honor to his name), and he never took off his big sunglasses. Now, his hair was silver and he was wearing a too formal cream outfit for the occasion.
Xiaoyu got tense. Anna specifically instructed her to be discreet and unnoticeable, if Violet recognized her, she would get fired after just being working for an hour. She needed to stay calm and go with whatever this man knew.
"So, tell me," He put his hand inside his jacket and the young martial artist prepared herself mentally for any kind of weapon, but he ended up just taking out a piece of chalk he used to write her name on the blackboard. "Is that spelled with a Y and a U?" He asked, pointing at her with his chalk.
"Um, yes, so..."
"Excellent!" He claimed with a very enthusiastic tone. "Welcome to my classroom. My name is Professor Lee Chaolan. Pleased to finally meet you."
"Oh, yes, I'm pleased to meet you too, Lee Sensei," Xiaoyu relaxed. Violet or Lee or whoever he was didn't remember her at all, so, at least for a moment she was out of trouble. "So, Lee Sensei..."
"Now, my dear new pupil, feel free to join me while I teach you about the marvelous history of the land of Kyoto, one of the most culturally preserved cities in the entire Japan. Its richness is not just material, but spiritual as no other."
"But, sir, there is no one in this class." The chinese girl was able to say.
"My apologies about that. All the scholars are helping with our upcoming school festival. We will probably have more students next week." Lee Chaolan explained with a patient tone, not very worried about the lack of students.
"I see..." Xiaoyu analized this information. Leaving the class on her first day was not the most polite, but she didn't count with too much time before the day finished, maybe she should also take the opportunity. Luckily for her, it seemed her professor was reading her mind.
"Well, I suppose, since you are our newest student, eager to also participate in the preparations, that I could look at the other side and allow you to take a look around."
"Really? Don't you mind?"
"Of course not. After all, who am I to interfere in this ultimate youth experience?" Every single word that came out of his mouth was more and more weird, but the chinese girl didn't judge him considering he was being helpful.
"Thanks, Lee Sensei. I will be going then. See you later." Said the chinese girl very cheerfully while leaving the class.
"Indeed, I have the suspicion we'll see each other again pretty soon, Ling Xiaoyu" Lee Sensei said in a very shady behavior, yet he was already alone and nobody got to listen to him.
International schools are easy. Was the first thing Ling Xiaoyu thought after leaving the classroom. But still, why on Earth is a multimillionaire like him teaching history in a private high school? This is so unusual. What does he want? But she was short of time to think about it. From now on, her only worry must be to find Shin Kamiya.
Xiaoyu walked through the halls while pretending to read a book about preparation for the upcoming SAT. Even in an international school, no one would ever dare to get in the way of a student preparing for university. Inside her book she hid her cellphone with the photo of her target. If a teacher passed near her, she readed in a low voice like she was memorizing to avoid interrogations or being asked to collaborate in the festival. She was also scanning the security. In addition to the guards at the entrance, there were quite a number of vigilance cameras in the hallways. The chinese fighter didn't have a reason to suspect someone was watching her, but as a spy from G Corporation she couldn't take the risk of getting detected searching for someone, so she covered her face with her book every time she was in the vision field of a camera.
With this strategy, she explored the main buildings, looking discreetly at every male student that walked by, but she still couldn't find the guy in question. An hour had almost passed when she started to lose hope. This is impossible! Where is he? I'll never find him on time. Xiaoyu was starting to feel depressed, so she chose to take a rest in the school patio with the rest of the preparations for the KISFES, in hope to come up with a new plan.
The patio was full of energy. Everyone was going from one place to another making noises and adjusting decorations. This whole environment was so vibrant even a little spy was feeling her spirits getting up. "This looks like an amusement park. The second I finish with this, I'll take Miharu to one". That was enough motivation to go on. She was not giving up yet.
Sitting on a bench, she looked at her cellphone to see if she could find a clue she missed at the previous glance, maybe a logo or something that gives her an idea of his tastes, but there was nothing, it was just a photo of a very attractive teenager. That's when Xiaoyu finally realized "That's it!" She couldn't help but to say out loud. Anna is right, he is very handsome, which means there must be a couple of girls interested in him.
She grabbed her stuff and went through the hallways again, this time paying attention to the chats between girls. There was a lot of gossip: A couple of girls insisted they saw spirits dancing in the forest, some said they saw a couple of guys leaving at night at some secret party, and a big group wanted to see the test scores of the honor students. Interested in a list with names, she followed them a couple of meters behind. All the grades were hanging on a wall in the hallway of the north building. The big group of schoolgirls gathered around, while Xiaoyu hid in a corner trying to listen to them.
"Looks like Matt got kicked out of the honor program."
"And Sofia and Bintu are sharing the third place again."
"Wow, Shin Kamiya got a perfect score!"
That's his name! Xiaoyu turned around the corner to see who was talking so interested in him. It was a very flashy girl, like no other student around there. She looked foreign, but she dressed like the Harajuku style, her hair was dyed in two tones of pink, and she was wearing a very complex purple and lilac dress, so full of accessories and details. Talk about no dress code, International schools are the way to go.
Deciding the friendly approach was the best way right now, the young martial artist went right to her with her brightest smile.
"Excuse me," The flashy girl turned around to Xiaoyu's call. "Hi, sorry for bothering you, but I just got transferred here, and I was wondering what you were talking about."
"Oh, no, you are not bothering me," Said the strange girl moving her hands in denial. "I was seeing the honor class's grades. The top students take special exams every month and the notes get published on the board for us to see."
"Really?" Xiaoyu took a look at the board, there were like twenty names, and the top of them was indeed Shin Kamiya, who's grades were all a 100. Amazing, at least if he is not the guy I was looking for, maybe can tutor me to have those grades. "So, tell me. You were talking about the number one rank. Is he a friend of yours?"
"Oh, not at all! I haven't even met him yet, I'm just a huge fan," She was acting as a very nervous and shy girl, which made her look even cuter. "But I really dream of introducing myself to him one day."
"One day? Why wait so long? I can go with you now if you are nervous." Xiaoyu offered to her hoping this was her chance.
"It's nothing like that, it's just impossible," She said with a melancholic tone. "You said you were new, so it's normal you don't know. Honor students never leave the south building."
"What! Never?" The chinese girl exclaimed with surprise.
"Yes, they are an elite group so exclusive they even have their own dorms inside the facility," She took a map of the school from her pocket and pointed at the property furthest from the rest. "Only the top seniors and their teachers got access there. There is no other way to enter otherwise."
This whole information was very troublesome for Xiaoyu. She has found Shin Kamiya, but he was more inaccessible than she expected. If he was 24/7 in another building, she wouldn't be capable of even taking an eyelash out of him. She needed another new plan, but first, she needed more details.
"You haven't seen him, not even once?"
"I did it one time!" She answered, full of emotion. "Every time there is a special event they record a short video to the rest of the school. They are even going to make one for the cultural festival." The excitement of her declaration was so adorable Xiaoyu couldn't help but laugh a little, which made her informant look at her quizzically.
"What? Did I say something too weird?"
"Not a bit! It's just that you are so cute."
"Oh, no, I-I'm not that cute." She said very embarrassed
"You are. You are also really pretty."
"Of course not! You are even prettier, I assure you," The girl panicked for the amount of compliments. "Right! I haven't introduced myself yet. My name is Alisa Bosconovitch, pleased to meet you."
"I'm Ling Xiaoyu, nice to meet you too," The petite fighter was really interested in the notorious schoolgirl. Her name and face are definitely from overseas, yet her japanese is fluid and she has the regional manners, like the way she doesn't say thank you to a compliment, but instead she denies it to not look conceited. I like her. "So, about this guy you wanna meet. What about their classmates? Maybe one of the ex-members of the honor class knows about him."
"Now that you mentioned, a classmate named Matt Brown just got a low test score, so today is going to be his last day as an honor student." Alisa said, thinking very seriously about it.
"Excuse me, are you talking about Matt Brown?" The two girls turned around to find a japanese girl with long black hair.
"I think so. Do you know him" Xiaoyu asked.
"Not really, but my boyfriend does, and I don't recommend you do it."
"There is something wrong with this gentleman Matt?" Alisa asked, very concerned.
"Well, he is not a great student actually. He lasted one month in the honor class, but nobody knows how he got in in the first place. And before that, they said he was always going around trying to convince the boys at school to go to a secret party in a fabric outside the city limits."
"What kind of party is that?"
"I don't know, but my boyfriend and a couple of classmates went there, but they only allow strong-looking people to enter." That last sentence raised Ling Xiaoyu's curiosity..
"Do you know when those classmates went?"
"I'm pretty sure it was on the weekend nights. Is the only time we have free anyway." The girl said goodbye and left. Suddenly, a bell sounded all over the place. Ling Xiaoyu looked at her watch, it was already 4 P.M., school hours were over for the day. Before she could think about something else, her G Corps cell phone started to sound, which meant she had to go for now.
"I'm sorry, Alisa. I think my mother is waiting for me. We'll keep talking later, ok?"
"Of course, thank you for your time, Ling Xiaoyu." Alisa said, making a little bow in gratitude.
"Just Xiao is ok, no need to be so formal."
"Ok, see you later, Xiao."
"Bye." A with that, Xiaoyu ran towards the exit, ready to talk with her boss about what she found that day.
Ling Xiaoyu answered her phone the second she was outside KIS.
"Hello, Anna. I'm already outside."
"Great, then get in the car."
"What car?" A loud horn sounded behind her and she found a black limo with black windows. The chinese girl entered without questions and found Anna inside.
"Report. What did you find?"
"There is definitely a Shin Kamiya at KIS, but he is an elite student, so he is confined all the time in the south building. The place has high security, so there is no possibility of entering without making a scene." Anna didn't look happy after hearing this.
"So, you wasted all day and you haven't been able to make contact with your target."
"Don't worry, I have a plan. By the end of the day I will have interacted with him." The chinese student answered, full of confidence. The assassin was not pleased at all about her attitude.
"Oh, really? And how exactly are you planning to enter now that the classes are over, kid?"
"Easy, I won't."
"You won't?"
"I don't need to. I'll just wait for them to come out," Xiaoyu opened her SAT book, it was full of notes she had written all day during her search. "Lately, the students have been attending a secret party at night, only the strong classmates were allowed to enter," She changed the page and kept talking. "Apparently, a student named Matt Brown is the one recruiting people to go. He was in the honor class this month, so he must have definitely informed the elite group about it."
"A party only for strong people? That's an unusual concept."
"Probably, if it was actually a party." Xiaoyu said smiling. She was so proud of herself for being able to solve the puzzle. "I've been in places like that before. We are dealing with a fight club for sure. That boy is looking for fighters, and he entered the honor class to invite them. And since today is his last day as an elite, I'm sure something is going to happen tonight"
"And why is this boy looking for fighters in an international school?"
"I'm not sure, but the answers must be in the fabric they are planning to go to." Anna stood quiet for a moment thinking about this new information. She was not very convinced about it..
"That's a cute story you are manufacturing in your head, but I don't see any actual proof that validates it."
"I have a hunch."
"A hunch! You are expecting me to let you keep with this plan based only on a hunch!"
"I know it doesn't look like much, but you have to trust me. I've been attending Mishima High for enough time to be able to see when something fishy is happening under my nose." The beautiful hitwoman was still hesitant, but it was true she hired this chinese fighter as her spy because she knew how to move in her environment. And even if she didn't, she didn't have many options.
"Alright, but your head is at stake. One error and I'll make you pay." Xiaoyu was nervous after hearing that threat, but it was too late to back off.
"Understood, the plan will work."
"Just one more thing. You said security was impeccable and there was no way to get in. How do you expect them to get out?"
"Don't worry about it. If I know something about rich kids, they never follow the rules of a curfew," Xiaoyu looked at her phone. It will be dark in three hours. "If something exciting is about to happen on a friday night, take for sure they already know how to get out of the school." And the assassin and her spy went back to their headquarters, waiting for the time to see if there was actually a security system good enough in this world to take down a group of teenagers waiting to have some fun.
To be continue...
Author's note: I hope you liked this chapter. As I said, from now on I'll make more changes to the script, so expect the same for the next chapter. Today I finally introduced Alisa to the story, but I simply refused to write the scene of her bumping into Xiaoyu, because I hate that trope. I don't know what's going on in Japan, but where I come from, colliding with someone it's not the correct form to introduce yourself, it's the way to get pickpocketed. Also, I wanted to make the school more interesting, because the movie talked about how secure and prestigious the school was, yet everyone entered any place like it was nothing.
Now, I have another announcement to make. Due to me having a final test next wednesday, I won't be able to summit the next chapter on time. I'm sorry, but college must always be a priority. I try to put chapter four as soon as I get time, and maybe it will be a shorter chapter. I'm still trying to figure it out. See you next time!
Thoughts during the creation process: It's funny for me the scene in the movie where Anna Williams shows pictures of the Tekken characters and then she selected Ling Xiaoyu, mostly because the other possible recruits were so random. Like, I get you considered Lili and Howarang, because they infiltrate a school, but King and Craig Marduk. How do you make a movie about that?
