Frank's oldest daughter is 13 year old Sammi Gallagher. Her mother Queenie Slott had her when she was in college. Frank was in college too, but Queenie had her own issues that she knew she needed to work through. She wasn't ready to be a mother so she signed custody over to Frank the day their daughter was born.
The dynamic of Sammi's family is a little strange to some people. They don't understand why she has so many siblings and why her father has so many kids. Given the recent events in Waco, a lot of her friends at school have started judging her father, calling him a cult leader and painting him in the same light that the media has painted David Koresh in.
All of it is lies. What they are saying about Frank, and what the media is saying about David.
Sammi's friends have been telling her that she's part of a cult, but she doesn't see it that way. To her it's a way of life. It's her religion - her beliefs - and her family. But once people hear the word cult, flags have already been raised. Flags that are hard - if not impossible - to lower. One of Sammi's teachers has even taken an interest in her, trying to convince her that her family is toxic and she needs to seek help in order to get out of her cult family.
The thing is Sammi doesn't think her family is toxic, weird or strange. It's not a cult to her. To her, it's normal. To her, it's just family.
Having been born just a few months after the creation of Frank's new age religion in 1980, this is how she's grown up. It's all she knows. Sammi can't imagine her life any other way, and even if she could, she wouldn't want to. She loves her life and her family.
Sammi is intelligent - just like her father - and she might be biased, but she's never met anyone smarter than her father. She's also mature for her age, getting along better with kids older than she is. She's best friends with fifteen year old Jeanette Maureen Anderson. She's close with Mary too, but due to the six year age gap, she doesn't see Mary as a mother. More of an older sister. That's good though. It allows Sammi to have a 'parent' that she can trust and confide in. Someone she can talk to about the tough things. Sammi finds that Mary is easy to talk to, because Mary doesn't react the way a parent would, but she gives advice the way a parent would.
In addition to being able to converse with people older - and sometimes wiser - than she is, Sammi's also great with the little kids and her younger siblings. And she'd be lying if she said she didn't have a favorite sibling. It's not always the same sibling though. It varies based on the day, but most often her favorite sibling is 4 year old Liberty - the identical twin sister to Mercy.
The reason for Liberty being Sammi's favorite sibling has to do with personality. Liberty is a very quiet child. She's not loud. She doesn't talk a lot or ask too many questions. She loves to read. In fact, that's what Sammi and Liberty are doing right now. They are sitting in the living room reading the book 'A Christmas Carol'. It's one of Sammi's favorites. She reads it every year.
Liberty is cuddled up to her big sister as they take turns reading. She loves reading, and it's even more fun when reading with someone. It's not as lonely and it makes the time seem like it's passing by quicker.
And while 'A Christmas Carol' wasn't one of Liberty's favorite books like it was for Sammi, that didn't matter to the 4 year old. She was just happy to be reading with her big sister. And unlike Sammi, Liberty doesn't necessarily have a favorite sibling. She loves all her siblings, but if she was asked who her favorite sibling is, her answer would be the name of whichever sibling she was with at the moment.
Unknown to the two siblings, Mary was standing in the hallway, smiling as she listened to her niece reading with Sammi. Unlike her sister Teresa, Mary hadn't been immediately captivated by Frank the way Teresa was. She had only been ten years old when she met Frank. She was just a little kid who could have cared less about biblical prophecies. She would have rather been playing with her friends. Even after almost a year, she still didn't care about the bible.
A few months after Mary had turned eleven, she started hanging out with the wrong crowd - the bad kids. The ones that smoked, had sex and got knocked up at thirteen, ending up single moms and having to drop out of school. Her parents didn't want that for her, so when her older brother and sister wanted to move into Mount Horeb, they went with them. Her parents hoped that Frank would be able to steer her onto the right path.
Well, it worked. By age twelve, Mary was done with her childish games. She was all about impressing Frank, especially after her sister was taken as Frank's third wife. It was 1986. Frank's son Honest was a year old and the most beautiful baby that Mary had ever seen.
In April of 1987 when Teresa had her first child - a beautiful daughter, who Frank named Truth Crystal. The birth of Truth was the moment that Mary knew she wanted to be one of Frank's wives too. She wanted to bear children for him. She wanted his beautiful babies.
In July of 1987, on her thirteenth birthday Mary's dream came true. Frank chose her to be his fourth wife. Less than a month later, she was pregnant and in May of 1988 she gave birth to a gorgeous baby girl - Rainbow Ruby.
Now Mary has three children. She loves her children and she loves her life. She wouldn't change a single thing, because she worked hard to prove to Frank that she was worthy and mature enough to be his wife. She was - and still is - the youngest wife he has taken. She's very proud of that.
Footsteps and excited voices were heard coming from upstairs. Mary decided to leave the children be as she headed upstairs to see what all the excitement was about. Passing by room after room, until she reached Olivia's room. It was pretty loud there. Looking in the room, she saw Olivia, her brother and niece Harriet.
Mary knocked on the open door.
The people of Mount Horeb were all one big family. They had no secrets so nobody saw that point in having the doors closed during the day.
"What's going on?" Mary asked
Olivia, with her face beaming in excitement, turned towards Mary, "Harrison and I are engaged. We're getting married."
"It's that exciting, Aunt Mary!" Harriet exclaimed, "Livvy's gonna be my mom."
"Yeah. That's great news. Congratulations." Mary said
Harrison smiled, "Thanks, Sis."
