I DO NOT OWN SPARTACUS: GODS OF THE ARENA.
Septimus Curtius Augurnus- Alan Rickman
Roman Auxiliary Barracks. 2 weeks later.
Flavius left his home and family in Florentia and traveled many miles to the closet barracks where he pledged himself to the Auxiliary for a term of 3 years. When he arrived for training, he and the other recruits were greeted by their superiors. As they fell into formation, a man in an impressive Roman uniform rode out on horseback.
"I am Gaius Claudius Glaber," the man announced as he trotted slowly in front of the men. "I am your Tribunus Laticlavius, the second in command of this legion. During the next three weeks, you men will be trained in the art of warfare and combat. You will be the proud Roman warriors who will bring honor to your families and to the republic. Mithridates and his Greeks have threatened the security of Rome and the safety of its people and we shall move with spear and sword and shield and we shall send those Greek dogs to the afterlife!"
"GLORY TO ROME!" shouted Flavius and the other recruits.
"Now, attend to your Legatus: Septimus Curtius Agurnus!" Glaber exclaimed as an older man with a beard and wearing more impressive Roman armor came riding forward. He looked at all of the recruits, but he seemed to look at them with contempt rather than pride.
"You may think that this is your one chance to get a little glory for yourselves, it is not." the Legatus insisted. "All glory shall go to Rome and to me. You men will be Roman soldiers, but make no mistake; that is all you are going to be. Not heroes, not legends, not even champions of Mars himself. You will only be soldiers. Begin training!" Flavius and the recruits dispersed and went to find their barracks. As Flavius began to unpack his things and prepare for the hard training that was ahead, he though that Legatus Augurnus had no idea on how to inspire loyalty or better fighting in his men.
Roman Auxiliary Barracks. 3 weeks later.
As Flavius adjusted to life in the Auxiliary, he completely threw himself into training. Flavius proved himself to be a skilled swordsman and learned his lessons well. However, Septimus was always barking at the recruits and lecturing them about how they were not measuring up to his insane standards and thus proving themselves to be an insult to him, to the Auxiliary, and to the republic of Rome itself. Even Flavius was not spared from the vile tongue of the Legatus.
"You fight like shit from a whore!" Septimus shouted one day as Flavius sparred with another legionnaire to be. Everything inside the young man wanted to punch the arrogant asshole's lights out for even suggesting that his mother was a whore, but he thought better of it. To lay hands on a superior officer would earn you a lash at the whipping post; if you were lucky. If you were not, you could very well be crucified. Flavius kept his mouth shut and continued training, determined to prove the man wrong.
City of Corinth. A month later.
After the training had ended, Legatus Angurnus commanded his men to march in the direction of Mithridates's army of insurgents. There had been no major battles, but their had been skirmishes a plenty. Flavius proved himself on the battlefield as he cut down many Greek soldiers. However, the auxiliary as a whole was not making much headway. Septimus worked the men far too hard with too little food or drink. Meanwhile, he continued to try and press his way through the city of Corinth; despite the fact that Glaber, along with the other subordinate officers warned him that going straight through would cost too many lives and a better option would be to starve them out. Septimus refused and would take no one's opinion but his own.
Eventually, Flavius and the rest of the Auxiliary clashed with a legion of Mithridates's men outside the gates of Corinth. The battle was long and hard. All of the Roman soldiers fought hard, but none fought as hard as Flavius. His sword found its way into the chest and neck of many Greek soldiers.
"FOR ROME!" Flavius shouted as his slaughter inspired hie fellow legionaries to fight harder themselves. After a battle that lasted many hours, the walls to Corinth were toppled and the city fell to the Roman auxiliary.
As the Roman legionaries marched through the city, they began to pillage and plunder Corinth for all of its valuables.
"Lay ruin to this city and whatever is here, help yourselves!" Legatus Augurnus commanded as the soldiers began to indeed help themselves to everything in Corinth. Flavius did not take part in the looting and was content to return to camp until he saw the Legatus trying to grab a woman.
"Leave me be you brute!" she cried out as Septimus struck her across the face.
"You will have my cock inside you or you will find a sword in its place!" He shouted as he pawed at her dress. Flavius however, could not stand to see such indignities forced upon a woman; even a Greek woman.
"Legatus!" He cried out as he put himself between Augurnus and the woman. "There is no need for this, Corinth has fallen. The day is ours. No more blood needs to be spilled this day."
"I will spill as much blood as I please!" He roared as he pushed Flavius out of the way. Before he could make another grab at the woman, Septimus was hit in the head with a rock. As Flavius stood over him, he saw Glaber calling out to the men.
"A traitor has struck the Legatus!" He cried out. Flavius dropped the stone and made for escape. He grabbed Septimus's horse and rode out of the city, avoiding the soldiers who tried to stop him. As he fled, all Flavius could think about was the fact that his career in the military was over.
