Chapter 1

With a small sigh, the thirty-year-old man sighed, fixing his tie. He had showered and just finished getting dressed for the day.

'Looks like it's going to be a quiet one.' he reflected calmly. 'It's always quiet between cases.'

With that, he finished, dressed relatively smartly in a pair of black pants, a leather belt, and white shirt with a simple black tie.

He turned and made his way out of his bedroom and into the main room of his apartment, which also doubled as an office. Moving towards his desk, he briefly touched his Private Investigators badge which laid on the desk, before moving to sit in the chair behind the desk.

He then pulled the files that he had been gathering together towards him and read over the last few notes. He had a few to add and then he could lock it away. It was for his most recently finished case, a typical Private Investigator case involving infidelity and his efforts to expose it.

'It's just something I'm good at, that's why I do it. I know what I'm doing and I've gotten very skilled at it.' he mused. 'But I can't help but feel like something is missing. Have I been too focused on this that I've neglected other parts of my life?'

He couldn't help but wonder at that.

It was true, he had been a Private Investigator for a good few years now, always delivering results and proving himself reliable enough to earn a comfortable living from the income he made from his cases. Yet, socially, he hadn't exactly made an impression. He was still single, he had very few family members left, at least those that he was in close contact with. Most of his free time was devoted to polishing off notes from old cases. Not exactly something which would secure him a future outside his work.

He closed the file folder and sighed again, checking the nameplate on his desk, picking it up idly. His name on the plate was 'Connor Perry', in that style that was typical of those style of nameplates.

'Is this everything that I amount to? Connor Perry, Private Investigator, nothing else?' he wondered.

He didn't have much time to dwell on it, for at that moment, there was a knock at the door. He quickly put the nameplate down and stood up, walking over to the door. Answering it, he was surprised by the figure on the other side.

Said figure was around fifty-three, tall, and had shoulder-length scruffy-looking grey hair and a similarly scruffy grey beard and moustache, brown eyes, fair skin, and typical clothing for a police detective, albeit unkempt. The man standing there was observing him with a careful, and almost critical, eye.

"Um, can I help you?" Connor queried.

The man grunted. "That remains to be seen. Connor Perry, Private Investigator, right?"

Connor nodded. "Yeah, that's right. Mr…?"

"Lieutenant. Lieutenant Hank Anderson for the DPD." the man introduced himself.

Connor nodded, stepping back and letting the man in. The Lieutenant stepped inside and looked around the main room; the office.

"So, to what do I owe the pleasure of this visit, Lieutenant?" Connor asked calmly.

Shaking his head, Hank turned to him. "Do you always talk like that, or are you just trying to mess with me?"

Connor returned to his seat. "I see no reason to be impolite to anyone, especially when they come here. You see, most people who come here come here for a reason. I assume you're here for a reason too, Lieutenant?"

Hank was quiet for a moment before finally walking over and sitting down on the opposite seat. He sat for a moment in silence. Connor said nothing either, not wanting to push things. He was already getting the impression that this Lieutenant Hank Anderson was a man with a short temper.

Finally, Hank broke the silence. "How much do you know about Elijah Kamski?"

That startled Connor. Of all the names he expected to hear in this office, that was the last one.

"Well, I know he's a reclusive billionaire, very well known for his wealth." Connor explained. "He's something of a strange one, even amongst his social circle of fellow well-off individuals…"

"He's also suspected of having murdered two of his past wives." Hank cut in.

Connor froze at that, startled. Finally, he broke it. "Wait, are you saying…?"

Hank shook his head. "There's admittedly not much in the way of evidence, but both of their deaths are suspicious. Enough that I'm worried about his current wife, his third."

Connor considered for a moment. He had to admit, there was something that bothered him.

"Why come to me?"

"Simple. I need someone to get inside Kamski's inner circle." Hank explained. "There's an opening for an intern position in his company. You need to get that position and get inside, then find out if there are any clues that point to him being responsible for killing his wives. If there's anything explaining why, then even better."

Connor shook his head. "Hold on... Why me? This is a serious matter, far beyond what someone like me would normally do. So...why not try and check for things like this yourself, talk to your Captain, your colleagues?"

"You think I'd be here if I didn't already try that? Nobody is doing anything. Everybody is agreeing that the deaths of the wives is suspicious, but nobody is bothering to investigate and the cases have been closed." Hank snapped. "Kamski's money does a good job protecting him, I think."

"So you're trying a different route?" Connor realized. "Well...I could take the case, but...you have to understand that if I discover their deaths were accidental or that Kamski was not responsible…"

"Then I'll accept that as the truth and that'll be that. But if you don't, if you do find out he's responsible and have proof, then not even those who he's bought off in the DPD, if that's what he's done, can ignore it." Hank finished.

Connor smiled lightly and nodded. "Well, Lieutenant Anderson, thank you for bringing this to my attention. If you can provide me with the full details, I'll take the case."

Hank looked relieved and began to do so, briefing him on the mission he wanted him to take on.
