Chapter 2
Now dressed in a crisp suit, Connor readied himself as he prepared to knock on the door. He had done as Lieutenant Anderson had suggested and applied to the intern job and got it, so now he was to visit Kamski at his home and talk to him before preparing to work the following day. Knocking on the door, he waited, hearing footsteps approaching, then the door was opened.
The woman who answered the door looked relatively young, roughly his age, perhaps a bit younger. She stood at five foot five inches in height with blue eyes, medium-length light brown hair in a bun, eyebrows a somewhat darker shade, and pale skin. She was wearing a white and dark blue uniform of sorts, simple trousers, and a tunic of sorts with simple shoes.
"Hello?" she greeted him warily.
He gave her his best smile. "Hello, I'm Connor Mason, the new Intern…" (He was using a false surname to hide his identity.)
Realization dawned in the young woman's eyes and she nodded. "Oh, of course! Please, this way."
With that, she opened the door to let him in. Connor entered the large isolated mansion and the young woman closed the door behind him before leading the way through the lobby. Connor followed her, noting that she appeared to be a cleaner or maid of some sort.
"I don't believe I caught your name, ma'am." he queried.
She seemed a little surprised, but smiled. "Oh, yes. I'm Kara. Kara Johnson."
Connor nodded. "Pleasure to meet you, Kara."
She seemed a little taken aback that he'd actually asked her for her name. He guessed that she was used to simply working in the background with few people paying attention to her. Still, Connor couldn't help but subconsciously note that she had attractive facial features.
As they made their way through the mansion, Connor took note of the various rooms, the decor, and the obvious wealth that was on show.
'Impressive. Kamski clearly doesn't mind showing off his money, even if hardly anyone sees it.' he mused to himself.
Soon they reached a door at the end of a corridor and Kara knocked.
"Come in." a male voice inside said.
Kara opened the door and guided Connor inside.
"Mr. Kamski, Connor Mason is here." she said.
The man behind the desk looked up and smiled. "Ah, thank you, Kara."
As Connor stepped up to the desk and Kara closed the door as she left, he took note of the man before him; Elijah Kamski. He was a tall, dark-haired, grey-eyed man with fair skin with a fit build. His hair was long, but tied back and he was clad in rather smart clothes, again showing his wealth.
"Mr. Mason, a pleasure to meet you." he said as he stood and held out his hand.
Connor shook his hand and couldn't help but feel a little uneasy. It was something about the way he spoke and the look on his face and it set Connor's teeth on edge. But he kept himself stoic as they sat down.
"Well, it's good to meet you. I was very impressed with what I heard, regarding your interview." Kamski remarked.
Connor gave a small smile. "Thank you. I am pleased to have made it to this position. I am ready to work."
Kamski smirked. "Well now, that's rather formal... I suppose that is useful in the circumstances, since we do have a lot of serious work to do. But that's no reason for things to be TOO formal. We can afford to relax now and again."
"I suppose, but it might take me a while to get used to that, being new here and all." Connor replied calmly.
He was certain that Kamski was, in fact, testing him somehow, so he opted to try and stay neutral, not to give anything away.
But before either of them could say anything else, the door opened again. Connor turned around and was surprised to see another woman that seemed to be his age. She was around average height with long blonde hair, tied in a side ponytail, blue eyes, and pale skin. She had a slender figure and clad in a casual light blue dress with flats.
"Oh, sorry, Elijah. I didn't know that you were meeting someone here today." she said quickly.
Kamski just smiled, standing up and approaching her. "No, no, it's fine. I was just getting to know my new intern. Connor Mason, this is my wife, Chloe."
Greeting each other, Connor watched as Kamski and Chloe interacted briefly.
'So, this is Kamski's third wife. She's younger than I thought, close to my age. Certainly younger than Kamski. I wonder...could she have anything do with-' He quickly caught himself. 'No, I can't think like that. It's a mistake to try and form theories without any data. Keep an open mind and don't draw conclusions until you've got something to base them on.'
With that, he stood up as Kamski turned back to him.
"Well, it was nice to meet you, Connor." he said. "Unfortunately, I have a lot to do, so I sadly cannot give you the tour as I hoped."
It was then, surprisingly, that Chloe spoke up. "If you'd like, Elijah, I could do it."
"That...would be perfect, my dear." Kamski said with that same unsettling smile. "Yes, you don't mind, do you, Connor?"
Connor shook his head. "No, that's fine."
So it was that Connor left the office, following Chloe. He knew now that he was in, he just needed to find the right moment to start searching for any proof. Hopefully, he could unravel this mystery quickly before it was too late.
Still, having met Kara and Chloe, he had two potential people that could give him some information. He just had to wait for the right moment to ask.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
