Chapter 3

Connor smiled lightly as he finished eating breakfast. It was his first day officially working for Kamski. He knew his mission well enough and he would be in touch with Hank when he had something to report. But for now, he had to keep a low profile, which meant doing the duties that he had been assigned. Luckily, he could use that to his advantage and try to find out anything useful, or make note of things that required his attention.

Just as he finished, the door opened and Kara entered.

"Hello, Mr. Mason. Are you ready?" she asked.

His smile widened slightly. "Please, just call me Connor. And yes, I'm ready."

Kara nodded and quickly cleared the table. "Alright, please follow me. I'll show you to your office."

"I must admit, I was surprised to find nobody else having breakfast." Connor commented.

Kara did not reply at once, but rather waited until they had left the dining room and were walking down one of the corridors.

"Mr. Kamski is an early riser. He has already eaten, as have many of the staff." she explained. "Everyone here is very routine in their habits, even when it's got nothing to do with their duties."

Connor took this in, noting something like that would be very useful to him, he just needed to learn those routines.

As Connor continued to follow Kara, he noticed a few things that he hadn't noticed during the tour he received from Chloe the day before. She had been thorough, but there were parts here and there that she'd either glossed over or avoided.

Something that stood out to him immediately was a room off the corridor they were in, behind a large set of solid wood double doors.

"What's that?" he asked casually.

Kara looked up and replied, "That's Mr. Kamski's private room. It's... I'm not actually sure what he has in there, even the rest of the staff and workers aren't allowed in there."

Connor pondered that. "I see... Curious, but...I suppose even rich men need a place where they can just be alone and enjoy some quiet."

"True." Kara agreed.

Together, they soon reached a larger room with a number of people working around in it.

"These are some of the people you will be working with. They're some of the most essential workers to Mr. Kamski's business. He has other offices around the city and occasionally goes to them for some time, but the people here are technically the most important." Kara told him.

"Makes sense." Connor agreed. 'After all, he practically has them working out of his home, so they'd have to be the most important. With that said, these people don't live here in the mansion.'

As he considered this, he stopped, spotting something on the wall by the door to what he guessed was an office of sorts. It was a picture depicting a younger-looking Kamski. Next to him was a tall woman with dark skin. She had black greying hair swept up to the left in dreads, brown eyes, and was clad in a smart-looking white suit.

Connor couldn't help but be curious. "Who is this?"

Kara turned and smiled lightly. "That's Amanda Stern. She was Mr. Kamski's teacher in university. He always said that she molded him into the man he is today. Not just the typical business studies at a university, but some of his more personal views as well."

"I see, thank you." Connor replied, while thinking, 'I wonder if those views include ruthlessness, given the impression I got on how he does business.'

Nevertheless, he continued on as Kara took him towards another office, next to which was a closed door with no indication of what was inside.

Seeing his gaze, Kara predicted his question. "That's the archive. Despite all these years, Mr. Kamski has never gotten around to fully going digital with his documents and such."

That caught Connor's attention. 'Hmmm, it sounds pretty innocent, but I don't know. It's a classic place to try and hide something, burying it beneath all those other documents.'

Still considering that, he entered his own office and sat at his desk.

"Everything you need is on your desk, including login details for the computer." Kara explained. "I hope everything will be to your satisfaction."

"Thank you, Kara." Connor replied. "Do you...do you mind if I ask you something?"

Kara seemed a little startled. "I...I do need to get back to work, but I suppose so. But if you have any queries about what to expect working here, you should talk to the other staff, they'll be able to help you better."

Connor, however, wanted to know something else. He considered carefully before asking as politely as possible.

"How long have you worked here, if you don't mind me asking?"

Kara seemed taken aback again, but nodded. "Uh, I've been here for a couple of years now."

"So you must have known Mr. Kamski's previous wife?"

"Yes, it's so tragic, what happened to her." Kara remarked.

"Do you know what happened?" Connor wondered.

Kara shook her head. "I only know what Mr. Kamski said, after getting the call from the police after the autopsy. She apparently died from heart failure."

"Huh, I see…" Connor replied.

He thought about that. It did sound plausible, but he had to keep his thoughts open. He knew of at least two other cases where a murder had been made to look like natural causes.

As Kara excused herself to go and resume her usual duties, Connor got to work, setting himself up at his desk, all the while planning to go around and chat casually with the staff to get an idea of how things worked there and hopefully find openings that he could exploit for his investigation.

He nevertheless felt that he was off to a reasonably good start. In just that casual conversation with Kara alone he had gleaned a few useful ideas. But right now, there were just too many variables to consider. He couldn't make any decision yet, not without more data. For now, though, it was time to work like any other employee. He had to maintain his cover, after all.
