Chapter 4
Connor let out a slow breath as he stepped away from his office, lost in thought as he approached the staff canteen for lunch. It had been a pretty basic office job so far, the work day passing like it would for any other simple worker. But Connor was alert, looking for anything out of the ordinary that might provide him with a clue.
'But there's nothing so far... Then again, I'm not here looking for shady business practices. I'm looking for proof that Kamski might be responsible for his wives' deaths. That's not going to be out in the open.' he thought to himself. 'Maybe one of the rooms that I wasn't shown the interior of, like the archives or Kamski's private room. Or maybe even his office itself. I'll have to try and see what's inside them...without being seen, of course.'
With that thought still in his mind, he entered the canteen and was surprised by a familiar face as she turned and smiled. It was Chloe.
"Oh, hello, Connor."
"Ah, Mrs…?"
She shook her head, laughing. "Please, just call me Chloe."
"Oh, okay...Chloe." he replied. "Um, I'm surprised to see you here."
Chloe nodded slowly. "Well, what can I say? I sometimes come down here and just find people to talk to. It helps me pass the time."
Connor bit his lip, considering that. It sounded a little strange to hear her say that, but he guessed that Kamski was always busy with his work, which would, of course, lead to Chloe being left alone for prolonged periods of time throughout the day.
There was a moment of silence before Connor quickly composed himself and gathered what he needed for lunch.
"So, Connor?" Chloe said casually. "Mind if I have lunch with you? As I said, I like to pass time talking and...well, you're new here."
He smiled a little at that, knowing what she was referring to. Being new, she likely hoped that he would have a few new stories to tell, for people to get to know.
He nodded. "Well, I don't know if I have much to tell you, but I would like to talk."
Chloe accepted that and together, they made their way to a table and sat down. As they began their lunch, there was a brief period of quiet before Chloe finally spoke.
"So are you sure that you don't have anything interesting to talk about?" Chloe asked.
Connor shook his head. "Not really. Just everything that I told you about me when you gave me the tour. That was everything about me."
He was referring to the fake past he was using for his cover. He couldn't help but feel strange, as if he felt guilty. But he didn't understand what he had to feel guilty about. The closest he could figure out was that he felt guilty about lying to her, despite it being necessary.
'So why am I feeling this way about it now? I never have before, it was just part of the job.' he wondered.
"Connor?"
He looked up and smiled, brushing the thoughts away.
"Sorry, I was just, lost in thought." he said to explain away his strange behavior.
Chloe seemed to accept this and so they lapsed into a comfortable silence again. It felt strangely personal, but neither of them commented on it.
That didn't mean that neither of them couldn't feel it, that it wasn't on their minds. But they tried to ignore it and focused instead on finding a new topic of conversation.
Finally, Connor asked what was on his mind. "I've got to admit...Mr. Kamski certainly seems to be...unlucky when it comes to love."
"I'm hoping to be the one who changes that, but yes." Chloe replied with a soft look on her face.
"His second wife died of heart failure, I heard?" Connor queried, merely sounding curious.
To his relief, Chloe didn't seem to notice anything suspicious and gave him the information he was looking for.
"Yes... It was quite a shock, especially when that was also how his first wife died." She paused and then added, "Don't worry, I've taken precautions and any medical check-ups I can. My heart is in very good condition."
She sounded like she was trying to steer the conversation away into something lighter and less morbid. Connor decided to let her, since he didn't want to push too much, not right away, at least. Not until he had more evidence to go on.
So he simply enjoyed the rest of his lunch, making small talk and trying not to pay too much attention to the strange yet not unpleasant atmosphere he felt around himself and Chloe at this present moment and which seemed to be getting stronger as more time passed.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
