Chapter 5
Checking his watch, Connor knew that it was time. It was late at night and nobody else would be awake now, except for the people Kamski hired as security, but he'd memorized their routes.
So, waiting for his chance, he stood by his door, listening, as he knew that a security guard was outside his room right now because he could hear him pacing. Finally, the footsteps faded away and Connor took his chance. He carefully opened the door, trying not to make a sound. He creeped out of the room and made his way quietly down the corridor.
'Alright, I just need to be careful, avoid any of the guards, and get into the archives. There must be something there, but this will likely take a long time.' he noted to himself.
With that, he carefully checked his pockets, making sure that he had what he needed. The whole building was a lot more eerie at night with no lights on, but he had adjusted his eyes to the darkness. It would cause some slight problems when he got to the archives, but he needed to put up with it for this part.
Connor grimaced. 'Uh-oh.'
He had turned another corner and saw the flashlight of a security guard coming the other way. With a quick look around, he quickly slid behind an alcove and hid from view. Now the only way he could be seen was if the guard actually came right up to the alcove and looked around it. To his relief, the guard didn't do that and walked right past.
He waited until the footsteps died away before slipping back out and he made his way around the last turn and headed for the doors to the archives.
Checking them, he found that they were locked, as expected. Looking around carefully, he made sure that no guards were close and knelt down, pulling out the makeshift lock-pick he had secured. It took a little while and he felt the sweat beading on his brow and his heart rate increasing as he heard the approaching footsteps of a guard. But luckily, the door opened at that point and he slipped inside, closing the door and he waited until the footsteps died away.
Breathing a slow sigh of relief, he returned the lock-pick to his pocket and pulled out his flashlight, which illuminated the part of the room he pointed it at. He blinked and let his eyes adjust to the new light before making his way quietly through the room. It wasn't as large as he thought, so he began to feel hopeful that he'd find something useful without having to spend an inordinate amount of time there.
Still, it took longer than he thought it would to find anything useful. When he did, however, he was taken aback, reading the documents and checking the pictures he had found.
'Wow, I wasn't expecting this. So...after graduating from college, Kamski actually started working with this Amanda Stern.' he reflected. 'They worked together in some sort of business partnership, trying to bring some new sort of invention that would change the world. That was the dream…'
He mused on that for a while before putting the details away after taking photos, making sure that they were clear, and then continued his search. He began to wonder if there was something more than a simple partnership between Kamski and Amanda. He got the feeling from the pictures that they had more of an almost mother/son vibe.
It was some time later when Connor found something else that caught his interest.
'Kamski and Amanda's business venture is the same as his current business, but back then it wasn't quite so...likely. This was a failed business venture, their rejection letter.' he noticed, then he noticed something else. 'That date on the letter...it's only a few days before the death of Kamski's first wife.'
Unnerved and a little curious about that, he took more photos and put those documents away. Then he shut off the flashlight and waited silently, tensely, as footsteps approach again, more than one guard. After a tense wait, the footsteps led away and Connor let out a sigh of relief before turning the flashlight back on and searching the archives some more, coming across Kamski's three marriage certificates.
'So Kamski married his first wife while in college and they were together for quite some time before her death.' Connor noted.
He also took note of the other dates, then he checked more documents and came across something else, which startled him. It was a news article which showed a picture of Amanda. Across it, written in Kamski's handwriting was a single word: 'WHY?'
Connor realized what it meant after taking more photos. 'Amanda died...from breast cancer. She had two months to live after being diagnosed, three years prior to this news article. She had two months, but managed to buck the odds and live for three whole years before succumbing to the cancer. Looks like Kamski didn't take it well.'
That wasn't all that disturbed him. The date on the article. Once again, it was only a few days before a death. This time, it was the death of Kamski's second wife.
'This is disturbing. Four disasters in Kamski's life, happening in pairs and in quick succession. His business plan fails, then his first wife dies. Then a few years later, Amanda dies, followed by his second wife.'
Then Connor recalled another date, plus another article he'd read. 'He came to know Chloe while his second wife was still alive... And they got married only a month after the second wife's death, compared to a year between his first and second wives.'
That raised some disturbing implications in his mind. Most notably, he began to wonder, to his great concern, if Chloe had been involved in the second wife's death, so that she and Kamski could be together. Somehow, the thought of that made him feel terrible.
He shook his head and recovered. He'd seen all that he needed to see. He made sure that everything was just as he'd left it and made his way back to the door.
He stopped at the door, shutting the flashlight off, and listened as the guards came by again. Once they'd left and Connor knew that he had enough time, he opened the door, fiddled with the lock to make sure that it would close and lock behind him, and left the archives room, letting it close.
He then slipped back to his room without any trouble, thankfully. He settled himself down and prepared to sleep. He'd have to get up tomorrow at a reasonable time to make sure that he could meet up with Lieutenant Anderson and report his findings so far.
He was beginning to wonder if Amanda Stern and her connection to Kamski could have something to do with all of this. He also wondered if Chloe knew more about her husband's past than she was letting on. Just how deep did this whole thing go?
