Chapter 6

Connor remained lost in thought, considering things as he sat in the diner in a booth near the back with a clear view of the only entrance. He could never be too careful, that was something that he had learned in his years as a private investigator.

'Not yet, not time yet. No need to get too anxious.' he told himself as he checked his watch.

He had arranged to meet Lieutenant Anderson there in order to deliver an update on what he had uncovered so far. He couldn't help but dwell on his discoveries the previous night, the gnawing thoughts regarding the involvement of certain individuals in particular bothered him.

It was at that moment that the door to the diner opened and Connor looked up, relief filling him when he saw Hank enter and after looking around briefly, spotted him. Hank made his way towards the booth and sat down heavily on the other side.

"Why meet here?"

Connor shrugged. "Public setting, doesn't look quite suspicious as meeting somewhere secretly and trying not to be seen."

Hank grunted. "A bar would have been preferable. I mean, what are my choices here? Coffee?"

"I don't think that would be helpful in this situation, as focus will be important." Connor remarked.

Hank grimaced a little at that but then sat back in his seat, seemingly deep in thought. Finally, he sighed.

"Alright, so, what have you got?"

He was attentive and it was time for Connor to make his reveals.

"Alright, last night I was able to sneak into Kamski's archives and search them." Connor explained.

Hank quirked an eyebrow. "You searched an entire archive in one night?"

"It was surprisingly not that large. But I found a number of interesting points." Connor explained. "I still admit that there are a couple of other places that could have important information that I've not had a chance to check out yet. Regardless, I'm also not sure if the information I've found is part of this investigation, except for a strange coincidence involving the timing of the events."

Hank nodded slowly at that. "The timing, huh? Well, that could make it more important than it seems. I'll hear it anyway."

Connor nodded, took out his phone, and after a short moment working on it, Hank's phone beeped. He checked it and noted the pictures that Connor had sent him.

"Alright, these are the things I've found. These documents don't look like much by themselves, but if you put them together, they build a bigger picture." Connor explained. "Once you put it all together, it paints a sequence of events leading up to now. Unfortunately, there's nothing to say if Kamski is involved in the deaths of his wives."

Hank made some sort of non-committal sound as he checked through everything, seeing everything that Connor has seen the previous night, while Connor explained each thing in detail.

So it was that they were able to piece together Kamski's past, how he started his college years as a student of Amanda Stern and met his first wife while there. They got married shortly after graduation and then Kamski went to work with Amanda. Several months down the line, their business venture was rejected for being too unrealistic. Mere days later, Kamski's first wife died from heart failure.

After that, there was no record of Kamski or his actions for a year or so, until his second marriage. It was during this time that Amanda developed breast cancer and was given two months to live. But instead, she held on for three years, during which time Kamski met Chloe and they were noted to become rather close. Amanda then died. Once again, this was followed mere days later by the sudden death of Kamski's second wife.

Then, merely a month later, Kamski married Chloe, the last event the documents constructed for the timeline they had.

Hank considered all of this and wondered for a moment. "So either Kamski's the unluckiest guy in the world, or there really is something messed up going on here." he remarked. "However...this last death worries me more now. Looking at it, we have to wonder. The third wife... Chloe, right? Do you think she's...?"

Connor sighed. "I know, it's worrying for me, too. But we can't jump to any conclusions right now."

Hank nodded. "Right, yeah. So...what now?"

"I'll talk more to the people there, continue working with Kamski, and everything. But I'll keep my eyes open." Connor explained. "I'll also try and get into those other two locked areas to see if there's anything else."

Hank nodded. "Alright, get in touch when you do. Coffee's on me."

With that, he paid and they left the diner, heading their separate ways.
