Chapter 7

"I...are you sure you need me here for this?" Connor asked, a little startled.

Kamski smirked. "Of course, Connor. Events like this are always important for businessmen and I can assure you, you will learn a lot here."

Connor just nodded and followed Kamski out into the ballroom. There were plenty of people of the rich society there. Businessmen, clients, people who got rich through other means. He was sure that while most were above board, a few would likely have a few questionable means of how they obtained their wealth.

'Nevertheless, I shouldn't worry too much about that. I'm not here for that. Who knows if this will help me, but…' Connor thought to himself, his thoughts cutting short as he stared.

Here he was, surrounded by so many rich people, eating, drinking, dancing, conversing. Yet his gaze was drawn to one spot. It was Chloe, laughing lightly as she spoke, her hair was done up in an elegant bun. She wore a luxurious silver floor-length dress with a vine-like pattern covering the bodice and there was a darker silver mesh over the skirt. She looked breathtaking.

Standing next to Chloe, smiling as she listened, was Kara, who appeared to be something of a personal friend to Chloe, instead of just being an ordinary maid. She too looked amazing, in an orange sleeveless and shoulder-exposing dress reaching down to a couple of inches above the knee. She hadn't styled her hair, but even so, it was still a lovely look for her.

He then noticed a third woman present. She looked slightly older than both of them. She was taller, with long, light strawberry blonde hair and brown eyes, light skin, and a curvaceous figure. She wore a spaghetti strap ankle-length black dress that was also backless, at least to the middle of her back.

"Something catch your eye, Connor?"

Connor started at that and turned to see Kamski looking at him, amused. Although, Connor was sure that his expression flickered slightly.

"Oh, I just-" he began, before glancing back at the ladies and saw his excuse. "I was just wondering who that was, talking with Kara and Chloe."

Kamski looked over and smiled. "Ah, the lovely North Ferox. She'll be here with her fiancee and soon-to-be father-in-law. They're around here somewhere. I'll introduce you."

"Oh...okay?"

He played along and nevertheless kept his eyes and ears open for any opportunities to advance his case.

"Well, Carl, wonderful to see you again."

Connor drew his full attention to the person that Kamski had just spoken to. He was a man of seventy-five with short grey hair and brown eyes, fair skinned with tattoos on his arms, clad in a smart suit and seated in a wheelchair. Standing just behind the man was another man, standing at 6 ft 1 inch in height, had green eyes, shaved black hair, black eyebrows, and tan skin, also clad in a smart suit.

"This my new intern, Connor Mason." Kamski introduced him to the men, then returning the sentiment. "Connor, this is my good friend Carl Manfred and his adopted son, Markus."

Connor stepped forwards, shaking hands, taking note that he knew the first man's name at once. As he shook hands, he nodded to Carl.

"It's a pleasure to meet such an esteemed artist, Mr. Manfred. I've seen many of your works." he said.

Carl laughed. "Spare me, Mr. Mason. I'm too old to be dealing with flattery anymore."

The man known as Markus smiled. "You know it is possible for people to still appreciate your work, Carl."

"Maybe so, but this young man is trying too hard." Carl explained with a wry smile.

It was at that point that the three ladies from before showed up. The one who had been identified as North had almost immediately gone up to Markus' side. The two of them subconsciously took each other's hand without any effort.

"Enjoying yourself?" Markus casually asked his fiancee.

North gave a small smile. "Well, it's not as bad as I feared. You know it's not exactly my scene, though."

"It's fine." he said calmly.

They stayed and talked to each other for a while and a little later, Kamski led Connor away to get a drink. As they drank, he gave a rather cold smile that didn't reach his eyes.

"I must admit, Markus seems to be enjoying the scandal which North's presence is causing." he remarked. "I am, too. It must be tough for all these people of note and wealth, having to share the room and react in a polite manner to her."

"Is...there a problem with North being here?" Connor asked.

Kamski chuckled. "Her past makes her a...questionable asset here. She used to be an exotic dancer, you see. This disturbs the sensitivities of these people, or for some, they are just afraid that she'll recognize them from the club and reveal where they've really been during those 'business trips' to their wives."

Connor gave a strained smiled as he finally understood, but luckily, it seemed real enough for Kamski.

As he finished his drink, Connor noted Chloe and Kara talking nearby. He couldn't help but notice the dynamic between them. He had noticed their closeness before and here, he saw more of it. They seemed to talk to each other more than any of the other women.

'Hmm, this might work to my advantage. I can try and get closer to Kara and that might help me figure out how Chloe is involved in this, if at all. She may have information that Chloe told to her and nobody else. I just need to gain enough of Kara's trust.' he mused as he got closer.

As he did so, he overheard the two ladies talking.

"So Kara, you're sure you're okay to be here tonight? I mean, what about Alice?" Chloe asked.

Kara smiled. "I was worried, yeah. But I got lucky, since Luther was able to watch her."

Connor couldn't help but wonder who Alice was, but focused on his task at hand as they noticed him.

"Hello there, um... Kara, would you care to dance?"

Kara smiled lightly. "Ah, sure, thank you."

With that, they both made their way out to the dance floor. Chloe watched and smiled lightly, yet felt a strange stirring within her which made her concerned, unsure of what she was feeling. Or rather, she had a suspicion, but didn't want to think about it.

Nevertheless, after Connor and Kara finished their dance, Chloe approached, making her own offer to dance, which Connor accepted. All the while, he hoped that this would help him in the long run.
