Chapter 8

Connor subconsciously straightened his tie as he prepared himself once more for another day at work. Having gathered what he needed, he was making his way down the corridor, heading for his office. As he walked, he looked over at the doors leading to Kamski's private room.

'I'll have to try and find a way to get in there next. I'm sure I'll find more of what I need. More proof…' he reflected.

However, he couldn't help but feel a little nervous at that thought as he considered his suspicions, ones which made him wonder if finding more proof would cause him problems, what with the other things that he was currently feeling.

He was, however, distracted from those problems when he reached the break room. The reason for his distraction was because there was someone there, someone he didn't recognize, and he couldn't figure out why they'd be there.

It was a young girl, around six or so, with medium-long dark brown hair which was tied back in a low ponytail, brown eyes, and rather pale skin. She was skinny and her clothes were worn but cared for, with rips and tears having been repaired as best as possible.

That told Connor all that he needed to know. 'She's not from a well-to-do family, but she's loved by them, cared for as best as they can with whatever means they have.'

It was at that moment the little girl looked up and saw him and she tensed at once. Connor did his best to smile and appear non-threatening, wondering just what to say.

At that moment, the other door of the break room opened and he saw Chloe come in, carrying a sketchpad and drawing implements. She smiled when she saw him.

"Oh, Connor. I see you've met Alice." she said.

Connor swallowed and composed himself. "Um, yeah."

Chloe approached the table and set the sketchpad and drawing implements down and smiled warmly at the girl.

"It's okay, Alice." she said cheerfully. "This is Connor, he works here with Elijah."

The girl nodded slowly, biting her lip. "O-okay." Her voice was soft and quiet.

Once Chloe gave her the sketchpad and drawing implements, Alice got to drawing. Making sure that she was occupied, Chloe turned from Alice to Connor, coming up close to him.

"So, um…" Connor began.

He wasn't able to get the question out, unable to think about how to ask appropriately. Luckily, Chloe knew what he was going to ask.

"Alice is Kara's daughter." she explained. "Kara has a pretty hard time, raising Alice as a single mom, you see. She's got to do this while still trying to work here. So I suggested that she could bring Alice here when she is working on the weekends, when Alice isn't in school. I told her that I'd watch her while Kara worked."

Connor nodded slowly. "I...I see... Well, I'd better get to work, but...maybe I could see you later?"

"Sure, that would be good." Chloe agreed.

With that, Connor left for his work while Chloe joined Alice in her drawing.

It was lunch time when Connor returned to the break room, deciding to see how things were going. He couldn't understand why, but he once again found himself drawn to there, drawn to seeing Chloe again.

As he approached, he heard Chloe and Alice talking together about Alice's school, it sounded like. He could also hear the dull noise of the break room TV in the background. He guessed that Chloe hadn't been able to be with Alice the whole time, so she had to keep her occupied at some point. Politely knocking on the door, he entered to see both Chloe and Alice there. This time upon seeing him, Alice smiled.

"Connor, glad you could join us." she said. "Come, sit down. Alice and I were just about to draw something else."

Connor smiled lightly and joined them. "I said I'd come by. So...how are things?"

Chloe smiled. "It's all rather well. We've just been having fun. Right, Alice?"

Alice nodded, brightening. Then, surprising Connor, she held out some paper and pencils.

"Do you wanna draw, too?" she asked.

Chloe grinned. "That sounds like a wonderful idea. Don't you think, Connor?"

While surprised, Connor couldn't help but smile, and agreed. Soon they were drawing together, simply having a peaceful time. Surprisingly, despite the confusion and doubts that they were still feeling (especially about each other), Connor and Chloe couldn't help but feel as if their current situation just felt...right.

After Alice had gone home with Kara for the day, Connor and Chloe finally had a moment alone to talk. Today, Connor had seen a side to Chloe that he had never seen before while she was around Alice; a more caring side. He wanted to know more about the arrangement between her and Kara, regarding Alice.

"So...what made you agree to look after Kara's daughter on weekends like this? It can't only be because you're friends, right?" he asked.

"Well, I'm alone a lot, since Elijah works so much, so I'm glad to have company. Also...I've always wanted to be a mom, but he's had no interest so far when it comes to starting a family." Chloe replied sadly. "But Alice...I feel like a second mom to her, because of how much time we spend together on weekends while Kara works."

Hearing her say those things really improved Connor's opinion of her. He also couldn't deny that he enjoyed his time spent with her and Alice that day, even though it had nothing to do with his mission. It had felt to him like they were...a real family. Being unmarried, that was something that he'd never felt before. But he couldn't deny that he liked that feeling...a lot.
