Chapter 9

Connor thought for a moment as he sat in the mansion's back garden, enjoying a cup of coffee. It was a day off for him and a number of the staff and other such people present at the mansion. Except for Kamski, who seemed to still be working, or at the very least, Connor couldn't find him anywhere, with so many people taking it easy today.

"Good morning, Connor."

He turned his head and smiled when he saw Chloe approaching him, with Kara right next to her.

"Mind if we join you?" Chloe asked.

Connor smiled. "Not at all, be my guest."

They both sat down at the table, helping themselves to some coffee, too. Even Kara had the day off, although Alice was currently at school.

'Kara didn't have to come in to work today, but Chloe invited her to spend time here, just two friends spending time together.' Connor reflected, before asking, "So where is Mr. Kamski?"

Chloe shrugged. "I'm not sure exactly, but he's away on business today and told me he'd be back by the end of the week. Until then, we've pretty much been given leave to relax."

Connor smiled at that, nodding and taking note that it seemed, despite all of this, Kamski's office and private room remained locked. He had no trouble letting his workers have the run of his mansion, so long as they stayed out of those rooms.

As they sat there, Connor wondered about the things that had been on his mind lately. He knew it might not have any bearing on his case, but then again, it might. Otherwise, it could help him with future plans, or just lead to him spending time listening to their stories. Nevertheless, he decided that it couldn't hurt.

"I've not really said anything about this before. Not much anyway, but...I was wondering. I don't really know much about either of you." Connor commented. "I've said a few things about myself over the days. Why not tell me a little about yourselves? It might be helpful, should anything arise in work?"

Both ladies shared a look and both smiled, turning to him again.

"You've got a point there, Connor." Chloe remarked. "Well, where should I start?"

But it wasn't Chloe who started. It was Kara.

"Well, I came to work here after Chloe helped me and recommended me to Mr. Kamski." She paused and then shuddered. "I just got out of a...bad relationship that still scares me, for Alice's sake."

Connor frowned, realizing what Kara was hinting at. It was clear that she had been in some sort of abusive relationship and had escaped it recently, but was still afraid for her safety, and Alice's.

Chloe smiled reassuringly. "It'll be okay, Kara. You know that I'll do what I can to help you, so you don't have to worry about that anymore."

Kara laughed softly at that. "True, true. You've helped me so much already, without any hesitation. I'll never be able to thank you enough."

"Anyway, about me…" Chloe thought for a moment. "Well, you might have heard of my family…"

She then named her parents and Connor was surprised, for it was clear that Chloe's father was another rather wealthy man and her mother was the man's famed socialite wife. It certainly caught his attention for a reason.

'So Chloe was already from a wealthy family? That certainly removes Kamski's money as a motive…'

He shook the thought away, considering his suspicions from what he had found so far, and this revelation certainly changed his perspective on that. Chloe had no reason to be after Kamski's money or business, it seemed.

Chloe continued. "I...I confess that I fell in love with Elijah a few years ago, but I never said anything about it. He was married to his second wife at the time and, well...we met and I enjoyed the time we spent during those moments. But I didn't want to cause any trouble."

"What did Mr. Kamski think about those moments?" Connor asked.

"Well, I'm not too sure. But I got the feeling that there was some kind of connection." Chloe admitted. "I tried not to overstep any boundaries, even after his wife died, but I did my best to try and help him. It just felt like the right thing to do."

Connor nodded. "Then you finally got married?"

Chloe nodded, and the rest of the story he already knew.

At that moment, Chloe excused herself to head inside briefly. Left alone with Kara, Connor thought for a moment.

"So, um...I guess it isn't easy working here, so much going on, trying to keep track of it all?" he queried.

Kara nodded slowly. "It can be, yeah. There are also...other things, things that I don't think I should be talking about. Sorry…"

"No, don't apologize." Connor said understandingly. "There are things you just can't talk about."

Nevertheless, that intrigued him greatly. He was now sure that he was on the right track. Kara was indeed hiding something and he intended to find out what it was, no matter what it took.
