Chapter 12

Kara couldn't help but smile, while admittedly feeling rather warm inside. Her face flushed as she continued her work. The source of her current emotional state, of course, being Connor. She looked over at him with her expression taking on a more coy look as she noticed him looking over at her, too. Their eyes met and Connor gave her a warm smile.

'Last night... Wow, I just... I can't believe it.' she found herself thinking. 'It was so nice and...'

Her eyes widened slightly and she straightened up when she saw Connor approaching her. He had gotten up from his desk and was currently crossing the office to her.

"Good morning, Kara." he greeted her.

She turned to face him fully. "Hello, Connor. I, um... Last night was amazing. Thank you so much."

Connor nodded, a soft smile on his face. "I know... It felt incredible."

"I admit, I wasn't expecting it. It just...happened. I just felt so…"

"Intense?" Connor finished for her. "I understand how you feel. Still, it was a wonderful night."

Kara agreed, and they lapsed into a small silence, both of them comfortable, but feeling that they should say something, to break the silence. They still had the place to themselves, which worked to their advantage. None of the other staff or occupants of the mansion would return until the day after tomorrow.

It was then that Kara noted the time and gasped.

"I need to go. Sorry, but I need to clean up Mr. Kamski's private room." she explained.

Hurrying away, she inadvertently muttered to herself, loud enough for Connor to hear, "Code 6803..."

As she just finished saying it, she stopped, eyes widening in horror as she realized what had just happened, what she had been saying, and that Connor was still in a position to hear it. She turned back to see him looking at her, a concerned look on his face.

"Kara…?"

"Oh God, Connor, no, I...I shouldn't have-" she stammered.

Connor knew exactly what she had said, how significant it was, but he had to keep up the act.

"Kara, it's alright. Um, that was the code for the door to Kamski's private room. I shouldn't have been listening." he said quickly.

Kara grimaced. "No, I shouldn't have said anything out loud. I don't know why I did, but…"

Connor stepped forward, trying to appease her. "It's alright, really. It...must be really important if you're afraid."

Kara took a slow breath, trying to calm herself down, trying to figure out how to explain things while also being afraid of the truth coming out, especially in regards to how Kamski would react.

Finally, with a heavy sigh, she fully turned to Connor.

"Connor, please, you can't say anything! You can let anyone know that you know that code." she pleaded. "And please, whatever you do, don't go in there or move anything."

Connor pressed a little more, still maintaining cover. "Kara, this is... I'm a little confused here. Why is that so important?"

"Everything in that room is set in a particular place and Mr. Kamski is very exact about that room staying exactly as he leaves it. He'll notice even the slightest deviation from how he has set it up." Kara told him. "I have to be careful, even when cleaning it. I'm the only other person with the code, so...if anything where to happen in there...I would get blamed, maybe even fired...or worse. For Alice's sake, I can't lose this job."

"Ah, I...I see now." Connor replied quickly. "Don't worry, I promise you, nothing will happen. I don't want to cause any trouble for you. I care about you...and Alice, too."

Kara looked relieved to hear that. "Thank you. You see, that's a rather...sensitive room, too. There are documents and such that are important to Mr. Kamski, important enough that he doesn't trust keeping them in the archives. If he had even the slightest suspicion-"

"He won't. Not from me. I promise." Connor said as reassuringly as he could.

That seemed to finally ease Kara as she calmed down and nodded. Excusing herself, she then left and made her way to the private room to clean it. Meanwhile, Connor returned to his desk and considered his options.

'So...that's not quite how I pictured getting the code. Easier than I intended, though. A clear mistake on Kara's part. I lowered her guard to the point where she said it without even thinking.' he noted. 'I'll have to remember her warnings. I need to investigate that room, maybe tomorrow night. That'll be my last chance before everyone comes back.'

He had a feeling that, coupled with what he had already discovered in the archives, any evidence he still needed would be in that room and could finally lift the lid on the case.
