Detroit Become Human: Dangerous Investigations

Chapter 13 of my Detroit story, enjoy.

Reviews

Boris Yeltsin: Yes indeed, naturally everything is looking rather tense, especially since, as this chapter proves, it's not just Kamski.
Wolfgirl2013: Thanks :)

Now onto the story.

Chapter 13

Connor smiled lightly as he finished with his report of his work. Everything was going smoothly. He just needed to wait for his opening to act. But he had to admit, while he was still playing along with his plan, he felt rather uneasy.

'I can't keep lying to myself. Something is not right in how I'm feeling around Chloe. Several times now I've almost blown my work with Kara, due to thinking about her instead.' he thought worriedly.

Quickly trying to shake the thoughts away, Connor stood up and picked up the plate he had used for breakfast and began making his way to the kitchen to began cleaning up. He just needed to bide his time and that night he would be able to search for more evidence and surely uncover the deeper truth behind the deaths of Kamski's previous wives.

As he cleaned up, he reflected again on Chloe, wondering how things would change between them, especially after the truth came out. But he knew that there was so much at stake that he had to stop dwelling on this and focus on getting to the bottom of the mystery.

At that point, the door opened just as he finished putting his plate away.

"Hmm? Oh, hello, Kara."

Kara smiled widely. "Hello, Connor. How are you?"

He smiled and replied, "I'm fine. It's been a good day today. Thankfully, there's nothing outstanding in my work, I just need to wait for the others to come back."

Approaching the fridge, Kara smiled at that. She opened it and checked the inside, making notes on a length of paper, a list of sorts.

As she did so, she replied, "That's good. It means that you have the rest of the day to yourself, huh?"

Connor nodded in agreement before watching her as she finished making the list and read it over.

"Groceries?" he queried.

She nodded. "Among other things. I figured, why not? It will be a nice surprise for everyone when they get back, everything all restocked for them."

Connor nodded in agreement, then had a thought. "Why don't I come with you? Help you out, an extra pair of hands?"

"Are you sure? I mean…"

"Of course, it's no trouble at all." Connor assured her.

Kara happily agreed to this and together, they got ready and left the mansion, taking Connor's car as they headed for the nearest mall that would have everything that they needed.

The moment of reprieve meant that even Connor had his guard down, so neither of them noticed a suspicious car following them.

Before long, they were shopping for groceries and talking casually as they did so. Connor noted the ease with which Kara picked out the best food items. She barely seemed to need to look, she just knew where to go. It was clear that she'd had lots of experience doing this for the Kamskis and for her daughter.

Seeing the look on his face, Kara laughed softly. "I've got plenty of experience shopping for the right things. I pretty much had to master it for Alice's sake." She paused and then added, "She's not a particularly fussy eater, but I always want to make sure that she has the best possible food. It wasn't easy, after all. Before…"

Connor grimaced at that, knowing somewhat what she meant. She didn't give him the full story, nobody had yet. But he knew that she was referring to her and Alice's past when they still lived with Alice's father.

"Kara, I...I'm so sorry."

She shook her head. "No, you've nothing to apologize for. Sorry, I shouldn't be dwelling on this. I promised myself that I wouldn't, and look to the future for Alice's sake. Anyway, I was thinking...I've kinda been bragging about my cooking skills. How about I show you tonight?"

"Oh?"

"Yeah, we'll get something nice and I'll fix it up for dinner for us?" she queried.

Connor smiled at that. "Well, why not?"

They both agreed and began discussing these plans, once again unaware of being watched.

Watching the pair was a man, glaring darkly as he stalked them. That man was tall and had a heavy build, greasy swept-back brown hair, brown sunken eyes, and pale pallid skin, clad in jeans and a T-shirt with simple boots and a leather jacket over the T-shirt. It was Kara's ex and Alice's father: Todd Williams. He glared darkly, watching Kara and Connor.

'So...I've finally found you, bitch. I knew that you wouldn't be able to hide forever, and now I'll make sure that you pay...especially for everything you did to me.'

He swore angrily to himself that he would have his revenge on Kara, no matter what.
