Chapter 14
Connor checked his watch anxiously, waiting for his chance. He knew that time was vital, but he couldn't take any risks. It was the last night before Kamski and the other employees came back. Kara had even opted to go home, which was why he was waiting, just in case Kara returned for something that she had forgotten.
'This is it, this is my chance. I have to do this now. I'm sure this is the break that I need.' he reflected.
He knew, however, that this was also his riskiest move yet. Everything that Kara had told him made it clear that, once he got what he needed from this room, he'd have to make sure that he left it exactly how he found it, or Kamski would know. That was why he needed the extra time, it would take longer to search this room than it took to search the archives.
'Alright, here we go.' he told himself.
With that, he got up and opened the door, looking around as he got out of the bedroom. There wasn't even security that night, but he was still making sure that Kara hadn't returned. Nodding to himself, now sure that it was safe, he left the room.
As he made his way through the mansion, he couldn't help but note, even without any security around to dodge, he felt wary. There was something spooky about the mansion at night, at least when going on a mission like this. The moon shining through the windows cast shadows from various objects. The atmosphere was eerie and every time Connor turned a corner, he couldn't help but tense, as if expecting something waiting for him.
He tried to rationalize, 'C'mon, get a grip, Connor. You're alone here, remember.'
So, keeping a level head, he finally approached the doors to Kamski's private room. He reached the keypad and input the code he'd heard Kara mutter. The door clicked open and he slipped inside the room, looking around carefully.
It seemed to be a rather opulent room, the window let in moonlight which showed a rather plush carpet and an ornate desk with a high-backed swivel chair behind it. There was a safe in the corner and several large bookcases against the back wall. Otherwise, there was nothing else in the room.
'Alright, I'd better get started. The safe is the most obvious, but I'll need a code. Plus, I'll need to make sure I'm not overlooking anything elsewhere in the room.' he told himself.
As such, he began his search, being cautious, knowing that he had to make sure that everything he checked was put back properly. The last thing he wanted was for this to come back badly on Kara.
With some careful searching and replacing, Connor managed to get a few useful details, getting pictures of what he needed and putting things back where they were. The most important detail was that he found the code for the safe.
Making his way over, he input the code and opened the door, holding his breath, just in case there was extra security. Luckily, there was nothing. He let out a slow breath and noted the contents of the safe. A series of documents and what looked like a journal. Connor took note of the documents, noting that they looked like medical documents. The journal, he guessed, was Kamski's own personal journal.
He wondered if this was the right course of action. Would this really lead to anything? Seeing that he had nothing else to work with however, he simply got to work and began searching through them, his eyes widening as he read and quickly began taking photos. This was evidence after all and it was far deeper than he expected!
'I never imagined... Well, this explains so much. But it also makes things more dangerous, especially for Chloe. But still, it does have one advantage.' he reflected. 'She's innocent, it was just a coincidence that she and Kamski got married so soon after his second wife's death. It's now clear that she had nothing to do with it.'
The thought of that actually made him happy and he couldn't help but note just how happy that made him. Chloe had nothing to do with the death of Kamski's previous wife.
'Strange, why am I so... Urgh, why am I still pretending?' He sighed. 'I think it's clear that I'm already falling in love with her... Well, this complicates things.'
He knew that he had to focus, especially on what he had found.
He carefully put everything back in the safe, closed the safe, and locked it again. He also took care, just in case Kamski was even more paranoid than suspected, to wipe down anything that he had touched, to remove potential fingerprints. He did so all the way to the door and slipped out, closing the door and wiping it and the keypad down.
He had what he'd came for and he made his way back to his room. Once there, he checked over the photos and grimaced.
'This is even darker than I thought. But there's no doubt now. Kamski killed both of his past wives. There was indeed a pattern, too. The time frames that I noticed before...they were important after all.' he summarized in his mind. 'Those medical records change everything. It certainly puts Kamski's actions in perspective. He has a deep-rooted psychological need to be in full control of all aspects of his life. It wasn't much when he was younger, but once in his adulthood, it became...deadly. Losing that control would cause a psychotic break in his mind and he'd endeavor to restore his feelings of being in control by any means necessary.'
Taking of all this onboard, pairing it with Kamski's journal, in which he had written the full details of what he had done, Connor now understood the chain of events.
Kamski and Amanda had worked on their project. When it was rejected, that was the first break in control that led to Kamski reacting violently. He was determined to restore some sort of control and he seemed to decide to do so by killing his wife, as it meant even if he lost control of things for his life's work, he'd have control over someone else's life and death. Similarly, with his second wife, after Amanda died, he broke again and sought to restore his feelings of control, again taking it out on his second wife, resulting in her death.
Connor sighed and thought, 'He and Chloe were already in love by then, but she had nothing to do with it. Kamski notes how his wife's death just gave him a chance and said he'd be a fool not to take it. This pretty much gives us the whole case...well, almost. We're still missing something important.'
Connor knew that there was still one thing that he needed to find: the murder weapon.
