I might change the rating to M in the future since there will be lemons, so there's a warning. Every chapter changes POVs. Enjoy ^^

(Sprint's POV)

Sprint stretched until his bones gave a satisfying pop. He sat on the grassy hill just outside camp, where the morning sunlight sifted through the pines and warmed his black-and-white fur. The meadow remained peaceful and quiet as it always was, with the occasional bird to remind the meadow pack of other life. Orange and blue fought for space in the color-shifting sky. Soon the Sun-Dog started his journey and appeared behind the trees, slowly rising higher and higher. With the calm ways of the plains, Sprint slowly closed his eyes, eventually losing idea of time...

CRACK! RUMBLE!

The Farm-Dog shot up at once. What was that sound? Who made that sound? It certainly wasn't a pack dog, not even Coal could snore that loud. Another rumble came, but Sprint could feel it this time. And it kept rumbling. The ground continued to shake on and on until it was less of a vibration and more of a Longpaw grabbing and shaking the fur off of him. In a panic Sprint turned to run back, run to the safety of the pack, but one of the mighty pines started to creak, and it slowly tipped over. Sprint skidded to a halt as dirt flung everywhere and more trees were heard falling. He barked as loud as he could, only to lose his voice among the chaos. His paws slipped under the ground, and he couldn't get back up.

But as quick as it started, it came to a stop. Sprint placed a paw down, then another, and the rest followed. Slowly he lifted himself up. The pack would need him to repair any damages... with a whimper the realization came. Could the pack have survived? With a growl as big as that, at least one dog would have perished. Quickly he ran, darting under the large, prickly pines and around the shrubbery sealing the rim of the hills. In the dip of the valley, a large fallen pine crashed on one of the dens, on the strongest, stone-carved of the dens... on the Alpha and Beta's dens...

All the other pack dogs gathered around the unfortunate event. As Sprint came closer, the sickening stench of blood grew bigger. He noticed all the dogs were lined up in order of rank, leaving a space just big enough for him. Pine stood next to the empty spot. When she noticed him, she quietly motioned him over. Then, with all the dogs gathered, they one-by-one raised their heads to the sky and bayed, letting their voices be heard to not only the Spirit Dogs, but anyone who came close to the valley. The dogs' howling went on until their voices grew sore and tired. A silence came over them.

After enough time passed, Sprint cleared his throat, and took an even glance at his packmates before climbing on the tree and speaking, "Dogs of the meadow pack," he tried to imitate the Alpha's call, "with the loss of our Alpha and Beta means a new one will have to be picked."

He observed the pack's reactions. They had little to no expression, so he continued, "Alpha was the most pleased with me. I think he would have liked me to take over for him."

"What?" Echo growled. The brown dog had a blazing look in her eyes. "You can't pick yourself as Alpha! I bet he would have you as his Beta."

"Well," Sprint ignored her implication, "there's no Alpha to challenge. Nor is there a Beta. So I'm sure you see my point?"

"No I don't! I don't agree with this change of leadership!" She faced her packmates, "who else agrees with me?!"

No one agreed. They avoided her eye, leading Echo to be frustrated. She mumbled, "Fine."

Sprint gave the dogs a moment before continuing once again, "and since we need a Beta, I pick Pine."

His litter-sister bounded up the logs with unchallenged joy. She sat beside him, giving an affectionate look. Sprint nodded. "Pack, for my first announcement, I say that it's time to move."

"WHAT?!" Echo howled. Talon joined the brown dog, "we can't move. We've lived here our whole life! None of us are prepared."

"Yes," Sprint agreed, "but think about it. Are we safe? Certainly! But we're not in a good spot. Think of how far the hunting part must go!"

Coal and Talon exchanged a glance.

"Think about the water! Do you know how far I am going to get water? Just for myself? Imagine if we had a sickness. The pack would be burning through their prey to get the energy to go to the river and back!"

"I think it's a good idea, but we can't go far. We haven't gone anywhere past our boundaries!" Exclaimed Sand. The small tan dog shifted as the rest of the pack gave him a look.

"I agree with Sand," Coal said, stepping beside him. Sand looked at the tall black-and-white dog with surprise. Sprint knew the pack would repeat the question, so he explained, "We'll go as far as we need. We just need a place with close water and food, and a shelter, too."

The dogs had a weary look. Pine announced, "Okay, before anyone thinks this through, let's just go. It's already day, and we don't know if there's going to be more big growls."

Sprint silently thanked Pine for the save. He and the Beta jumped down, and the pack followed them. A rush of excitement flowed in his veins, but a tingle in his ear made him question the choice. All he needs to do is keep the pack together. As long as he does that, they should survive the journey, no matter the length.

Should.
