Fendrel is left behind in the dark forest by Kris, both running from the beasts. The lad stumbles through the night, desperate to reach the safety of their settlement's palisades. But when he arrives at the village his hopes are shattered by bad news and Kris' even worse decisions that make Fendrel and more of his brethrens jump from the frying pan into the fire.
