Erik's mother did not know, nor did she care to consider, that what she did now would extinguish the joy from her son's golden eyes for many long years. Countless men would try to take his life, and one woman would take his heart. The world would torture him for a face that was not his fault and fear him for the sins that were, and it all began with the choice she made that day.

Rejected, betrayed, abhorred... damned. Erik has fled from the Opera Populaire and has taken up refuge in the slums of San Michele all' Adige. He sits alone and thinks on times dead and gone. Times when Christine loved him, his music and teachings. He cannot seem to draw inspiration so he writes. He sits and begins to write the world's darkest and most despairing story ever told.

Christine is in the Phantom's lair with him and Raoul. She kisses him in the hopes that he will let both of them go, not realizing that kiss would awaken something inside of her. She begins to realize that it is the Phantom who she truly wants to be with. She is the only one who could ever possibly love him.

Raoul DeChagney wakes up after being unconscious for several days. His brother, Philippe, tells him he hit his head after the debut of Christine Daae. Raoul doesn't believe him and goes to see Christine. Only to find out his brother was right.

It's hard when someone expects a lot out of you. Carlotta misses a note during a performance, and Erik comes to cheer her up.
