A/N: Sooooo, after a weird bit of auto-correct mishap while I was talking with some friends, this idea came to me. What if Adam and Kim meet while they are still in high-school? What would their relationship be like as they grow up? Totally OC and AU
The summer of 1999 was a scorching one in Chicago. The school year was coming to an end and sixteen year old Adam Ruzek was starting to be restless sitting in the back of his class. From that vantage point, he had a nice view of Kim Burgess, the girl that invaded his thoughts on a daily basis. They were best friends but he wanted more and he wasn't sure if the feelings were one sided or not. They would spend evenings working on class assignments because let's face it, he wasn't exactly the most academic person in the world. They'd make popcorn and listen to music while they worked but half the time, Adam ended up making her laugh in hysterics and that was the sound he loved hearing the most.
"Mr. Ruzek, am I boring you?"
"No, no sir." Adam came back to the present and Mr. Gregory's history class. "I was just so engrossed in your lesson." He said smoothly. The teacher knew how much he hated his class and it often resulted in friction between the two. The bell rang and Adam grabbed his books, following behind the flock of kids exiting the room.
"What was that Adam?" She pulled him roughly by his t-shirt as they walked down the hall to his locker.
"Not my fault his class sucks." He shrugged.
"Come on Adam, you have to be more serious than that if you want to hope to pass this year."
"I am serious Kim. His class sucks and I can't concentrate." He leaned against his locker as Kim opened hers. "And let's face it, I have you to help me out." He turned his head to look at her and gave her a cocky smirk.
"That smirk doesn't work on me Ruzek." She laughed. "Tonight, my place. Bring your books and we'll go over today so you can be ready for the test."
"You're on." They walked together to their English class and sat next to each other in the back. "Hey, you have any good food to munch at your place or I make my own stop?"
"You eat way too much crap Adam, I'm not buying you shit." She chuckled quietly, not trying to gain the attention of their teacher.
"Fine, I'll grab the snacks." He snickered and returned to listening to the teacher. Kim glanced at him a few times and shook her head. She could see him doodle in his school books while he pretended to listen to the teacher. As soon as they were out of class, Adam was filled with energy. "Day's finally over." He quickly did his locker combo and pulled a few things out of it and stuffed them into his bag.
"You wish that the moment we step foot into this place, every morning." She slammed his locker shut just to annoy him.
"Not my fault this place blows." He was forced to do his combo again. "Only good thing in this place is you and football."
"You're such a liar."
"About football or you?"
"Me. You're Mr. popular and the girls are always all over you."
"Too bad I don't care about those girls. You're the only one I want to hang with." He had a habit of turning down the girls that kept throwing themselves at him, being too mellow for that much attention on him but being on a winning football team as a quarterback did nothing to help.
"Thank god you don't talk to those girls like that." She chuckled with a slight blush across her cheeks.
"Glad to know that I can make you blush though." He snickered, making her turn from pink to red.
"Get your ass out of here." She pushed him forward and laughed.
"Need a ride home?"
"I'm good, Nicole is bringing me back."
"Not too boring today to bring you home now." He seethed under his breath.
"Stop it Adam, it's fine." It was no secret that there was no love lost between Nicole Burgess and Adam Ruzek.
"No its not." He stopped next to his car and faced her. "She treats you like a real sister in front of everyone when it's convenient for her. You shouldn't let her get away with it."
"And you worry too much. I don't really care what she thinks or how she acts. I get a ride with her good, otherwise I know my best friend would never let me walk all the way home." She patted his cheek with a wide smile on her face, trying to ease the tension on his features.
"You are way too good for her." He answered with finality.
"And I'll see you at my place after dinner."
"I'll be there with the popcorn." He pulled her to him for a hug but Kim was barely keeping her legs from turning into Jell-O.
"And I'll be there with the books." He released her with a dramatic sigh and got in his car. Kim watched him go and made her way to her sister's car to wait for her.
Adam made it into a quiet house and he simply grabbed a few snacks with a popcorn bag and stuffed it in his bag before returning it to his car. He knew that his dad wasn't going to show up for dinner like he usually did so he found some Alfredo sauce and made himself some pasta that he ate in front of the tv. Being alone at home wasn't new for Adam and he had learned early on to take care of himself. His parents were separated and he spent most of his time with his dad so he could stay in school and play football among other things. His friends and Kim were the most important to him and he didn't want that to change because his parents couldn't stand each other. He finished eating and grabbed some snacks from the cupboard along with two packs of popcorn that he stuffed in his bag and he was on his way to Kim's to study.
"Hey Mrs. B." Adam smiled as Kim's mom opened the front door.
"Ready to study?" She patted him playfully on the shoulder.
"You know it." He rolled her eyes and she laughed.
"Kim's already in her room, you can go on up."
"Thanks Mrs. B." He called over his shoulder as he climbed the stairs to the second story, Kim's room the first on his right. "Hey book nerd, I'm all yours."
"Shut up." The blush was visible on her cheeks. "Maybe you should worry less about book nerd me and more about history." She waved her book around from on top of her bed.
"History sucks and it's useful to no one." He plopped down unceremoniously on her bed, pulling the thick history book out of his bag.
"It's useful to you if you don't want to be stuck in the same grade while book nerd me, moves on up."
"You're killing me." He growled. "What was Gregory yapping about today?"
"World War 2." She rolled her eyes. "Come on." For the next two hours, Kim did her best to try to get Adam to retain some information about the Second World War but they were nowhere as far along as she would have hoped. "Adam please, concentrate." She was starting to be a bit aggravated by his lack of concentration.
"There's too much shit in there Kim, my brain doesn't want to keep anything in."
"What does your brain want to do?"
"It wants to take a break." He dropped the book unceremoniously on the bed and pounced on Kim, attacking her sides with his fingers, making her laugh out loud. He tickled her until she was completely winded and crying uncle.
"Oh my god." She ran a hand through her hair as Adam still hovered over her. She took a few deep breaths and realised how close he was now.
Adam was inches from her face, and she could feel his breath against her skin. He moved a strand of hair and pushed it behind her ear, his thumb coming to gently brush against her cheek. She had wanted him to kiss her for the longest time and had always been scared of slipping when they were together. If she acted and he didn't share the same feelings, it would crush her and ruin their friendship and that was the last thing she wanted to happen. Her heart was thundering in her chest in anticipation and the look she found in his eyes told her he wanted it too but still the fear crept in. She was scared she was a bad kisser and she worried her bottom lip with her teeth, Adam following the movement with his eyes.
"Adam, please, don't." Her stammering speech was cut by his lips on hers. The hand on her cheek grounded her and she granted his tongue access on the second kiss. It was not rushed but Adam's other hand was firmly around her waist and their bodies fit perfectly together like two pieces of a puzzle. He released her lips and gave her a peck on the lips before pulling away slightly, looking into each other's eyes.
"Kim." He whispered but their moment was interrupted by a knock on the door, Kim scrambling to get out from under Adam as he pushed himself away from her and sitting properly. "Everything okay in here?" Her mother poked her head in the door and smiled at them both.
"Yeah we're good why?" Kim tried to have her most innocent face.
"It suddenly became so quiet, that's not like the two of you."
"We were concentrated Mrs. B." Adam shrugged, trying to steer the awkward moment away from Kim.
"Alright, don't stay up too late, you guys have school tomorrow."
"We're almost done." Kim's brain was barely functioning right now but she just wanted her mother out of the room. She nodded and left them alone again.
"Adam." He knew she was about to clam up on herself but he wasn't going to let her.
"No." He reached out for her hand and ran his thumb against her knuckles. "I don't regret it and I want it to happen again."
"This changes everything Adam."
"I know but that's a good thing." He mused. "I've wanted this for a while now and I was just so damn scared to screw everything up by kissing you but I know now that you wanted it too."
"So many times." She closed her eyes when he turned her hand in his and ran his thumb in slow circles against her palm. "Where does that leave us?"
"It leaves us that I come pick you up from now on every morning and drop you off every day after school and we just keep doing our thing except I get to kiss you out in the open." He smirked.
"I think that's a good enough deal." She smiled.
"That smile." He moved closer to Kim, making her blush.
"Adam, stop." She was breathless but when he pressed his lips to hers in a kiss, the butterflies in her belly took flight and she moved her hand from the top of her bed to the back of his neck. They made out until air became a necessity. "I don't think I can help you study anymore tonight." She whispered as they parted.
"And I don't want to study anymore but I think I should head back home." Going home wasn't his favourite thing to do but he knew that he couldn't stay at Kim's, it being the one thing her father had rules against where they were concerned.
"Your dad not there again?"
"He's been taking overtime, something about a roof not paying itself." He shrugged. Money was one of the things his dad only talked about in undertones and Adam never pushed the subject. "I'll just do my thing like I always do." He shrugged again.
Kim hated that his family unit was so fractured but she had been a constant at his side for years and her family, especially her mother, had taken to him as if he was part of hers. "I'll walk you to the door." She stood as Adam stuffed his books in his bag. They walked down to the front door and Adam turned as he walked through the threshold.
"I'll see you in the morning." He whispered before leaning down and placing a kiss on her cheek.
"Good night." She smiled at him.
"Good night." Kim closed the door behind him and leaned against it, a large smile on her lips. She walked up, her fingers lingering on her lips. She didn't think that being kissed by Adam would make her feel like this but she went to bed with her heart full of promises.
