CHAPTER ONE: THE CHOOSING, PART 1
The Dragon is power.
Once they were our equals, today humans control the dragon... to race, compete, and fight–at nearly 200 miles per hour!
Now dragons are once again ready to be released, and the powerful Dragon of Legend would choose a young hero to save the planet–a Dragon Booster! The gold dragon is the only thing that can stop me!
"Release the Dragon!"
. . .
Moordryd Paynn stormed out of his father's office and towards the Paynn stables. He already ran into–literally–his henchman/friend Cain, only stopping briefly to tell him to get the crew ready. Now, he was going to find someone else.
"Zaylin!" he yelled, pushing open the stable door.
"What?!" a female voice screamed from one of the stables. One of the doors opened, and a slim and slender female, with the same white hair and gold eyes and pale skin tone, stepped out of the stables. Her white hair was tied back in a braid laying over her right shoulder.
Zaylin was also known as Moordryd's little sister, despite him being older by a good thirty minutes. She was dressed a black and dark purple riding jacket, over a black shirt, black riding pants, and dark brown, nearly black, riding boots with buckles. She had her arms crossed over her chest, staring–no–glaring at her brother.
"What?" she gritted out.
Moordryd stopped and stared at his sister. What happened to her? He opened his mouth to say something, but she beat him to it.
"Why did you come in here yelling at me?" She asked, "And it better be good," she narrowed her eyes at her brother.
Behind her, Moordryd saw the head of a Black Psi-class dragon, Zaylin's dragon, Avalon, poking his head out of his stall. Avalon was nearly identical to Moordryd's own dragon, Decepshun, minus the fact their colorations were different.
He could see that Avalon wasn't pleased with how Moordryd was speaking with Zaylin.
Moordryd blinked, "Why? Were you heading somewhere?"
Zaylin rolled her eyes, "I'm meeting some friends," she said, giving her brother the hint.
"Oh yeah, just stay away From Penn Stables,"
. . .
Running along one of the various streets of Dragon City, a Light Blue-Nautilus-Class dragon with a short-narrow snout and shark tail, and Red Thruster Gear and White Aero Gear on its back.
The ride was quiet save for the dragon's breathing. But the quietness was accepted by both the rider and dragon, especially after their race they had earlier.
The rider was a teenager by the looks of things. Their identity was completely unknown as their dark blue helmet kept their face covered. The rider was wearing a dark blue high-collared sleeveless jacket over a black shirt, dark gray pants, and black boots. They also wore black gloves on their hands that were gripping the saddle.
The teen looked up as a tall familiar sign came into view; Penn Racing Stables. Leaving their dragon to know where to go, the teen began thinking of the last ten years...
Ten years ago, Gwendolyn Westbrook was orphaned, her mother, Elinor Westbrook, a highly respected, popular, and well-known dragon racer perished in a racing accident. Due to having no known family, Gwendolyn and her younger sister, Elaine, were separated, taken to different orphanages. Gwendolyn had been quickly taken in by her mother's best friend, Connor Penn and his wife Fira, and raised alongside their son, Artha. Gwen was later adopted by Connor and Fira the following year.
Connor had searched for Elaine, but always came up blank. The authorities had been no help so Connor and Fira had been on their own. They eventually had to stop and come to believe that Elaine was safe and had been adopted by a loving family, who probably had her name changed. As time went on, Gwendolyn's memories of her sister faded, but she always remembered her sister's name.
A month shy of Artha's birthday, the Penns lost Fira when she gave birth to Lance. Losing Fira was like Gwendolyn losing her mother, it hurt. It was incredibly hard for all of them. Connor was now a single father to three kids under the age of ten, and was still running his business. But they pushed through, together. They had a long-term babysitter up until Gwendolyn and Artha were twelve and eleven, by that point the two were helping Connor in the stables and the babysitter was more so for Lance.
Gwendolyn was so lost in her thoughts, she failed to see they had arrived.
"Gwendolyn, we've arrived," Gwendolyn snapped out of her memories from the voice of her dragon. Yes, you heard correctly, voice. Unlike her adoptive family, Gwendolyn has had the ability to understand the dragons since she was small. She doesn't know much, only that through her biological mother she gained this gift.
"Thank you, Tsundra," Gwendolyn said as entered the Penn Racing Stables coming to the area where dragons were geared up. Dismounting her dragon, Gwendolyn removed her helmet, revealing black hair with dark blue streaks. Pulling a hair tie from her hair, had it cascading down her back, reaching her mid-back. Placing her helmet to the side, she began removing the gear and saddle off Tsundra.
As she got Tsundra settled into his stall, and fed, another voice spoke up, "Ah, welcome home Gwen,"
Gwendolyn turned around to see her father, Connor Penn, make his way over to her. "Hi, Dad," the two quickly shared a hug.
"How was the race?" Connor asked, as the two left Tsundra.
"Good, I won," Gwen said with a smile and Connor chuckled. "So, what's going on?"
Instead of answering, Connor motioned for her to follow him, "Come with me,"
Confused, Gwen followed her father as he led her to another part of the stables. To her confusion the stall they arrived at was completely shut. Before she could question her father, Connor pressed a button and the gate lowered. Her mouth dropped at the sight before her.
"N-No you can't be s-serious..."
The sight was a four-legged dragon. But what stood out was the black and gold coloring of the dragon.
"A Black and Gold Dragon," Connor said firmly. Gwen remembered hearing Connor visiting Dragon Priests over the years, but never to why. Could this have been the reason why?
"Wait, does this mean the rumors I'm hearing..."
"Where dragons are starting to get harder to control?" Connor questioned; Gwen nodded. "Then I'm afraid so. Remember the stories I told you about the Dragon Booster?"
"Yeah," Gwen nodded, they were her favorite stories, and oddly, the only story she wanted to hear before bed.
"Today Beau turns sixteen, thus the age to choose a Dragon Booster." Connor began.
Gwen made a mental note to talk to her brother, Artha, as it was also his birthday. She spoke to him briefly at breakfast before her race; she had his birthday gift in her room.
"I have assembled all the top racers that Dragon City has to offer, in hopes one will be the new Dragon Booster," Connor explained.
Gwen looked at her father with a raised eyebrow. She tried not to appear skeptical about his plan, but something about it didn't seem right. Connor also noticed her look, "Don't worry, only racers not affiliated with Down City crews were invited,"
"Well, if you say so..." Gwen still was not sure about this.
. . .
Gwen had every reason to be right about this tryout. The Dragon Eye crew had managed to sneak in, but Connor caught them before they got into it. He made sure to let that crew know that the Dragon Eye and any Down City crew weren't allowed at Penn stables.
The moment after the Dragon Eye crew left, Connor began the tryouts. Beau had swiftly gone through a couple of them, sending them flying off. One had hit the sign, causing Gwen and everyone else to wince.
Not long afterward, Gwen's best friend and fellow racer, Kitt Wong had shown up. As Kitt went to try Beau, Gwen could hear her dragon, a Red Magma-class dragon named Wyldfyre muttering.
"Why must she try? She is my rider. Mine alone." the red dragon was muttering.
Gwen was hiding a giggle, she understood Wyldfyre's complaining. Every dragon from the other racers was growling the same thing.
The next thing Gwen knew, she heard Kitt's yell. Whipping around she found her being caught by Artha. Unable to hold it, she burst out laughing, making her brother and best friend whip their heads to look at her.
. . .
Gwen stared at the sight before her, the entire Dragon Eye racing crew was here. All with dragons and some gear. She couldn't take them all on. She would get herself hurt, or something worse.
How could this have happened? Gwen thought.
FLASHBACK
Gwen sighed as she saw the sign for Penn Stables. It had been a long day, a race, a failure of dragon tryouts, another race, and talking to the Dragon City news team. She just wanted to go home and sleep, and she knew Tsundra wanted it too. After two races in one day, she was exhausted. Gwen normally didn't do multiple races, but this was needed for her ranking.
As they made the turn into the Penn Property, Tsundra came to a halting stop, surprising Gwen and almost making her fly forward.
"What the? Tsundra?"
Her dragon didn't answer, even though Gwen could understand him, all she got were growls from him. Looking up, Gwen's eyes went wide.
"The Dragon Eye crew?!" she hissed.
The Dragon Eye crew were standing outside the stables. Tsundra let out another growl; without waiting for Gwen's orders, he slinked away so he could get a closer view of her.
Once they were hidden a bit, Gwen jumped off Tsundra. Keeping her gear on, she crept over to the stables, hoping to get closer. Within seconds she found a way into the stables but had to dive into a stable. The Leader of the Dragon Eye crew, Moordryd Paynn was in Beau's stall.
That was not good.
END FLASHBACK
Before Gwen could think something more, a flash of red caught her eye. Looking up she paled, and her eyes went wide. The living quarters were on fire!
As panicked as she was, Gwen also knew she couldn't do much. With the Dragon Eye crew surrounding the area, she was severely outnumbered, and trying to go against them would not end well.
Tsundra looked up when Gwen made her way over. He could smell the smoke from the fire, it was hard not to miss it. What were they going to do?
"Come on boy," Gwen said, climbing up. "While we can't go head-on, we can at least lead some away,"
. . .
Moordryd Paynn grinned, the Golden Dragon of Legend was his! He could finally prove to his father he did something right!
Beau had his head down, the Trapping Gear on him was keeping him down. He couldn't do anything.
"Dad! Dad!"
"Help us! Please, dad! Help us!"
Beau's eyes went wide. He knew those voices, Artha and Lance. They were trapped! Growling, he gathered his energy again, this time fighting against the gear, making it strain.
"Impossible! He's breaking free?!" Moordryd exclaimed as Beau pushed against the gear. "Stop him! I want that Dragon!"
As Beau finally broke free, the gear snapped flying off, as he stood up. He let out the mighty roar, forcing Moordryd to lean back a bit. At the same time, a gold aura formed around Beau.
"Hang on! Another Mag-Burst!" Moordryd yelled at Beau Mag-Burst Moordryd, and two others, roughly tossing them to the side.
. . .
Letting out a cough, Artha quickly pushed Lance into the air duct in the wall. The smoke was increasing making it a bit hard to breathe, but Artha needed to get Lance out of here. He luckily didn't need to worry about his sister, as Gwen had been out since the tryouts. As long as she was away and safe, Artha was glad. "Through here, it leads outside,"
"But what about you? It's too small." Lance said, looking back at his brother.
"Go!" Artha said firmly, pushing Lance. The moment Lance was further in, more wreckage fell behind Artha, making him look at it. He glanced down at the amulet, but before he could do anything, there was a loud crash, coving himself from the debris. As more smoke entered the house, Artha began to cough more. He and Lance had been trapped for a while, he must have inhaled more smoke than he thought.
Suddenly, there was a loud crash. Looking over, Artha was surprised, and relieved. "Beau! Boy am I glad to see you!" he ran over to the dragon, quickly leaping onto his back.
Suddenly, there was a surprised look on the dragon's face, and then he closed his eyes, as he began to emit a golden light.
"W-What's happening?" Artha whispered, slightly worried. Unknowingly to him, a gold star bone mark appeared on Beau's forehead, and he began glowing brighter.
"The one Beau chooses will be the Dragon Booster," Connor's voice echoed in Artha's mind.
(Artha wasn't the only other one to see the glow either.)
. . .
"Woohoo!" Artha cheered, as Beau broke through the other side of the living quarters, completely out of view of the Dragon Eye.
Standing near the crossway was Lance, who had gotten out safely. Artha let out a sigh of relief, glad his brother was safe. The youngest Penn starred in surprise and shock. "Beau chose... you?" it was almost like he couldn't believe it.
Artha pulled Lance up behind him, "Well, yeah, I–" he was cut off when voices were heard approaching. Not wanting them to be caught, or himself, Beau took off. "Where are we going-yeeeaaahhh!" Artha cried out, surprised by the speed.
Beau ran across a bridge that led to another platform, stopping at the edge. The brothers slid down his tail to reach the ledge below, only to be surprised by the height. They had not been expecting that.
"I found him!" Moordryd exclaimed, riding on his dragon, Decepshun, a Black Psi-Class Dragon. Beau let out a roar as he charged at him, stopping where Connor's sign stood. Glancing up, he saw that the sign was ready to fall, and with a smirk, struck the building with his tail, shaking the sign supports, causing it to fall between them.
After the sign fell, Moordryd let out an annoyed yell, forcing Decepshun to burst through the sign. At the end of the bridge, he saw the end of Beau's tail going over the edge.
"What?!"
. . .
On the ledge, the boys had gotten back onto Beau's back, looking for a way out. Unfortunately, from their spot, there was no exit. "No way out, no way out," Artha muttered.
"Hey, what about that building over there?" Lance said, pointing across the ledge.
Artha shook his head, "It's too far.. whoooa!" he yelled, as Beau took off, running along the edge, heading right for the end.
Once again, Connor's voice echoed in Artha's head. "The dragon is just like the great power within you. Release the dragon."
Closing his eyes, Artha began to concentrate, and at the same time, Beau's star mark began glowing. Beau began running faster than normal, creating a vortex around him as he jumped off the ledge, and down to the rooftop in the distance. Artha and Lance stared wide-eyed, yelling in surprise, as Beau made it to the rooftop. But due to the speed, he went sliding, until he hit the small billboard coming to a complete stop. Though the stop forced the two brothers off the dragon and behind the sign.
Artha sat up, staring in complete shock until a smile formed. "W-We made it!"
"Speak for yourself!" Lance cried, making Artha turn only to wince; his brother was headfirst in a garbage can, only his legs hanging out.
Across the way, Moordryd and his second-in-command, Cain, and their dragons reached the ledge that Beau had leaped from. They could see Beau on the other rooftop, roaring, and standing on his two back legs.
"He's getting away! C'mon!"
Cain quickly grabbed Moordryd's arm before he did something stupid, "Our dragons can't jump that far!" he said, being reasonable.
Moordryd let out an annoyed groan but agreed with Cain.
. . .
Gwen and Tsundra stared in shock at the sight before them.
Penn Stables. Their home was destroyed.
Gwen had been able to lure some of the Dragon Eye crew away, but she didn't stick around to find out what happened. Tsundra ran for a long while to keep the Dragon Eye on them.
However, they soon stopped chasing her. Gwen concluded that Moodryd had called for them back, or something. She didn't follow them to make sure.
She and Tsundra stayed in Mid-City walking around, waiting for the right time to return home.
"W-What happened?" Gwen wondered.
. . .
Beaucephalis let out a growl when he heard loud footsteps–or dragon steps–coming near him and the boys. He wasn't sure who or what it could be, but he was ready to keep Artha and Lance safe. They weren't exactly in the best place; Squire's End, pretty much the capital of the Down City Crews.
Luckily, the steps were friendly. It was the skinny tall male that always hung out with Artha and his Bull-class dragon Cyrano, and Gwen and Tsundra.
Artha turned around and let out a breath of relief, "It's alright, Beau, it's just Parm, Gwen, Cyrano, and Tsundra,"
As she removed her helmet, Tsundra magged Gwen, removing her from the saddle and to the ground. The second her feet touched the ground; she ran over to her brothers. "Artha, Lance!" she cried, pulling them both in for hugs. Normally, both would whine and complain, but after the evening they had, they let Gwen do this. They all needed it.
"We're alright, Gwen," Artha said, "A little shaken, but we're alright," he added once Gwen removed her arms from around them.
"That's good," she said, and turned to the large, black, and gold dragon, "And how about you, Beau?"
"Fine, a little tired and hungry, but fine," the Dragon of Legend growled, or said. Growling for the Penn brothers and Parmon, speaking for Gwen.
Seeing Beau and Lance distracted with help from Gwen, Artha turned to Parm. "I'm glad you're alright," his best friend said.
"Thanks," Artha said, "It was wild, I'll say that. Did you happen to find my father? He's not answering any of my calls,"
"I ran into Gwen as she was leaving, she looked around and only found this," Parm held up Connor's old racing jacket, which had some black on it, most likely from the fire.
Artha sighed, rubbing his face with his hand, "I saw the symbol of the crew that attacked the stables–a black dragon eye. They're responsible for what happened,"
Parm looked frightened, "Down City crew have spies all over the place! If they want your dragon, they can track you down. They could pay people to talk! They could–"
"I'm hungry!" Lance cried, bringing Artha and Parmon's conversation to a close. Artha gave his sister a look and she shrugged, showing she had nothing on her.
Artha let out a sigh, as Parmon said, "And what about food?! Do you realize how much a dragon-like Beau needs to eat?" the teen exclaimed, crossing his arms over his chest, and giving the ten-year-old a look.
Suddenly, an idea formed in Artha's head, and he grinned. Gwen saw his expression, and while she would be up for most of his ideas, this one, she wasn't sure of.
"Parmon, I'm going to enter the Street Races!"
"What?!" Parmon sputters out. He quickly looked over to Gwen, who had begun making her way over. "Gwen!"
The black-haired girl shrugged, "I don't see a problem with it. I race too, Parmon," she added, narrowing her eyes.
Parmon slightly backed away from his best friend's sister, he never liked getting her angry. The first time was enough for him to learn to never get on Gwen's bad side...
"The best defense is a good offense," Artha added, pulling Parmon back to their conversation, "We need money, we need to eat, and the Down City crews race in the All-City Races!"
"Y-You can't street race!" Parmon cried, "The Down City crew will identify Beau, and will make another attempt to steal him!"
Gwen winced and looked at Artha, "He has a point, there," Her brother gave her a deadpanned look, "I'm just saying, Parmon–for once–"
"Hey!" the dark-skinned teen cried.
"–has a point. The Down City crews will identify Beau if you use him," Gwen continued, pretending to not have heard Parmon.
"Then, Beau will have to stay here," Artha said, earning a "Huh?" from the dragon in question. "I'll race with another dragon; sorry boy," he said, looking at Beau.
The black and gold dragon stared at Artha before shutting his eyes and focusing on his energy. Suddenly, he was covered in bright light, forcing the humans to cover their eyes. When the light went away, the humans stared at Beau in shock.
He was no longer black and gold. He was red and blue.
The humans stared at the sight before them. They turned to each other and then back to Beau. Cyrano and Tsundra were also in shock and awe at the sight.
"D-Did you just change colors?" Tsundra asked.
Beau glared at his brother, "Does it look like I just did that?"
"I'm not going to say anything," Cyrano said, shaking his head. He didn't even want to think about how it happened.
"D-Did you see that!? He changed colors!" Lance cried, turning to his brother and sister.
Parmon blinked his eyes, "I see it, but I just don't believe it! Artha, what does this mean?"
"It means you can race with Beau!" Lance cried in excitement.
Gwen looked at Artha with a grin. Artha pulled out the star medallion his father gave him before his disappearance, "It means I can do a lot more than that!" he said with a grin.
EDIT (09/14/2022): Added some more changes, and grammar. PrincessAnime08 and I forgot to add some things so we added them back.
EDIT (08/25/2022): Changed Gwen being a foster child of Connor Penn to having been adopted when she was a child. She keeps her birth name of Westbrook, but on official documents she is labeled as Gwendolyn Westbrook-Penn.
